"Kleine Deutsche Geschiche" ("Germany, A New History" is the english title of said book) by Hagen Schulze is a neat little book that covers german history from the early middle ages to the year 2000. As it only has 350 pages it is very direct and only covers the basics but that should be enough for a start. Related to the HRE Schulze stresses the transformation from the previously centralised Ottonian and Salian dynasties to the gradual decentralisation under the late Staufer dynasty, the importance of ecclesiastical vassals during the early times of the realm and the many "constitution" bulls from the 13th century and onwards. It's not perfect but very good for a start.
And apparently there is also a podcast about the HRE somewhere but I don't care about those formats.
Feel free to ask any more questions.
