This is El. Many of you know the Jews were originally polytheists, until they settled on one God to worship above the others. El was the god they chose to worship alone. And you can find remnants of this in the Bible, where God calls himself El Shaddai (El the Almighty).

Something interesting is that before the Bible El used to be called "El, the most compassionate, the most merciful" which is rather similar to Allah, Ir Rahmawn, Ir Raheem. And the arabs used to also be polytheists and they had a god named Allah until Islam told them not to associate anything with Allah. Thoughts on this? Lol.

El was also sometimes called il, or al, or ilah.
Now, Hebrew and Arabic are both semetic languages that come from that same source.

In Urgatic, El is called il rahm, (the merciful), in Hebrew he is called rahum, and in Arabic, eer raheem.

Al-ilah is arabic for the god, and ilah was one of the names of el, and it was contracted to form Allah.

Isra-el, micha-el, and gabri-el are all named after El. And El-ohim and el shaddai are all words referring to El that got mistranslated as God.

Originally El was one of many gods in hebrew polytheism. Lol.

Why are you on the history or religion board?
It's impossible to talk about European History without Christianity. The 16th century becomes unintelligible without the Bible

The Torah is a fable, so even if Yahweh, Jesus, or Allah are all real beings, which I believe they are, they depend on a (not so) noble lie to get people to do the right thing. God doesn't need to lie. A demiurgic being might need to, but not God. If you think that this particular deity has good politics, a good and balance philosophy for life, go for it! You can even use the apologetics you do now to try to convince everyone that your religion is totally the authentic one, but don't get confused. They're not God, none of them are. God doesn't need us. We need him.

It all becomes clear when you see the full history.

The ancient Ugartics were first. They had many gods, El, Ba'al, Anat, and many more.
El was known as the father of the gods, and called il rahm, which means the most merciful in Ugartic.
He was depicted as a man on a throne with a beard and a hat.

Eventually, the Canaanites stopped worshipping other gods, and they worshipped El alone. And the other gods like Ba'al became blasphemies.
The name El is still preserved in the Bible and often translated as "god" but it was actually a personal name of one of many hebrew polytheistic gods that gradually became their single god when they shifted to polytheism.

In Genesis 1 god is called Elohim, which is translated as god, but it really comes from the name of El. In Genesis 17 god refers to himself as El Shaddai which means El Almighty, but is often translated to God Almighty.

At some point during the writing of the Bible his name actually changes from El-ohim to YHWH.

The names of Isra-el, Micha-el, Gabri-el, etc are also references to the polytheistic deity El.

In Arabic, Al-ilah is possibly a reference to il-ilah which means the god, and ilah is also derived from el. Arabic Eer Raheem comes from Ugartic il Rahm which means the especially merciful in both languages and were both common titles for Allah/El.

Arabs used to be polytheistic like the jews were, and some of their gods were Allat, Menat, and Allah. But eventually, like the jews they settled on one God and all the other gods became blasphemies. Ancient polytheistic rabs used to think of Allah as a father god like El, and Allah was associated with daughters like Menat and Allat. But the Quran declares that this is blasphemy and Allah does not beget. This is similar to Ugartic god El and his children who were considered blasphemous after the jews decided they only worship El.
Lol.

>they settled on one God to worship above the others. El was the god they chose to worship alone.
This is a bit confused. El "Most High" was the head of the pantheon, not the only deity. El "Most High" had 70 sons. The pantheon is still evident in places like Genesis and Deuteronomy.

The personal god Jews chose at the exclusion of others was the Most High's son, Yahweh. This is because at the time the pentateuch was written, Jews still thought Yahweh was just in charge of Israel and the people of Israel. They thought other gods were in charge of other nations.
