why didn't the United States develop into confederations like Europe did after the fall of Rome? it would be cool to see how different early nationalities would have made different principalities based on ethno-cultural grounds.

Because technology was developed enough to allow a central government to forcefully unite disperate groups. The civil war proved that any state that wants independence will be crushed. Pre civil war any ideas of independence will be smothered by economic pressures.
