Houndclops is a former contestant from CRAB 4 last year. He was elected by the community to be the "Pit Champion", aka the filter you have to face if you want to join CRAB. It's been a thing since CRAB 3 that a prior tourney's contestant would be used as a Pit Champion.

Yeah, the tourney’s whole point is an artist drawing their OC facing off against another OC, and if you can’t be bothered to represent your opponent then you just aren’t going to get very far in the rounds. People enter a bunch of different kinds of characters and there’s no telling who you’ll be matched against until the round starts. Usually people are matched by their equivalent art skill levels so that’s something that someone can use to try predicting where they are or who’d they match against.

Since last year there’s a phase where participants draw all the characters on their team so if you really are only looking to draw characters you want to draw and get free art of your OC without paying it back for your opponents or team you’re not going to flourish in CRAB.

I don't know about other people but I generally voted for people who I think followed the prompts and put forward better or funnier stories regardless of their art skill or personality. There are definitely people who vote against entries of people they don't like though, even if the opponent's entry makes serious mistakes themselves.

Voting itself really varies too.

"I don't vote for things that don't have narratives"

"I don't vote for incomplete work"
>votes for work that isn't complete but the art is miles ahead in skill compared to the complete one

I notice that it is good for learning how to understand an audience in the moment. Great entries don't necessarily win in CRAB and winning teams are ultimately products of luck in the end.

CRAB itself is an opportunity to get to know other artists who may be in the same skill bracket as you are, who can focus enough to make a comic or game or whatever else in a timeframe of 2 weeks per round (even superbegs which automatically propels them above any nodraw critic by merit of effort), and can put aside some ego to give other characters and artists the time of day than their own vanity projects 24/7. Everyone obviously is excited about their own characters but what I notice is that there's feedback of artists tossing their characters at each other and being interested IN them for one reason or another. Some people get inspired, some people learn things, some people go 'well that was interesting' and go on their way.

And some people don't. It's not for everyone. But if it sounds interesting enough to (you), the person who's reading this, it's not bad to at least try it out if you can.

I understand that! CRAB is a bit demanding depending on the amount of work one is willing to put. Plenty of artists have pushed themselves hard to really shine here, which I know had an affect on their concurrently running comics and their update schedules.

Quite a number of older crabs have in days past shared their real comics while participating in the tourney, having the experience sure is a boon to have and a few people find new readers among the ranks of artists too!

Introducing a new potential spectator role:

>A Spectator does not have to vote at all if they don't want to do that work! But the requirements for voting as one ARE as I've considered it:

> Required illustration/comic featuring your character reacting to your favorite entry of the round, must include the featured crabs of that round in the drawing itself.
>In-depth reviews of every match in the round. In-depth could be a few sentences but should demonstrate you --read/engaged with the entry and be made in good faith.
>No luck-based votecasting, such as spinning a wheel or flipping a coin to choose. This will invalidate the ballot.
>Only one abstaining vote allowed per-ballot. If multiple abstains are placed then this will invalidate the ballot.
>Votes must be submitted in an official turn-in point, be it the 4chan thread
