Ballpoint is similar to pencil, you can build value with it. As someone who spent last year using nothing but pen and ink for traditional art (usually on a lunch break for work) when I didn't feel confident or was learning something new I'd default to ballpoint because it's the most forgiving. In fact I kind of had to chicken scratch more because the ink didn't flow as well.

If you want to stop chicken scratching get a couple of micron pigmas (or felt tip pens) or a fude brush pen and the fear of fucking up will make you think before putting down a stroke.

maybe, I don't remember the ref I used, it was a year ago. I do know really rushed the proportions (I was bad at them at that time, little less awful now) because of my short 45 min lunch break. When I went back to pencil and could actually use some construction drawing was way easier.

You need to draw more and develop hand eye coordination. Copy from reference, contour draw without looking at the paper around 80% of the time, when you do look at the paper look where you want your line to go and make the motion towards that point. You have to figure it out on your own and hammer in instinct unfortunately.

'ghost' your lines a bit, make the motion you think you need to make the full longer line, but don't press down, then when you think you have it, commit to the line.

Never has, ya silly goose. Breaks in linework are common, if not everpresent. Chicken scratching is when you form masses of hairy looking little lines to build up the impression of a longer individual stroke. Some manage to make chicken scratching look passable due to excelling in other areas of drawing, and somewhat minimizing the scratchiness. It still tends to hamstring them when working on more delicate or precise subjects, though. Then there are other artists who do compound lines, often mistaken for checken scratch, but it's only several strokes used to form one line, more precisely and intentionally.
Precision and intentionality are the keys, here, in any case.

The reason why chicken scratching is bad is not because that it looks bad or ugly, it is because you don't commit to lines, and if you don't commit to lines then how are you supposed to learn? it is like going into a car and just randomly smahing every button, raping the gear stick and face palming into the steering wheels, sure, you might be lucky and the car might randomly drive and reach the location, but most likely, shit's gonna happen.

Roughs are an important tool for the artist.

Sometimes you want to get an idea on paper so you can redraw it with planning and intent. This is from the 30 strip outline I planned on doing as a newspaper sized weekly, with only six completed. The outburst is explainable if you knew the characters and history, but I wanted to capture her raw emotions for the summation of their lives entwined.
