So... What is your opinion on 3D?
Do you use it at all?
Is it easier to 2D?

After doing 3D for a couple of years I have come to appreciate 2D much more for how straightforward it is in comparison, you can just let ideas flow freely without being hindered by the program. I've also seen my 2D skills decline because of me neglecting it in favor of 3D, not completely but enough for it to have a noticeable effect. It did prove useful though in the way you gain a better understanding of space and perspective as if through osmosis, just by using Blender or what have you. You could use 3D for backgrounds and such other more technical entities that are a pain to do if you're not an engineering freak (like guns, for instance), but for characters? Nah, where would the fun be in that

Don't be so confrontational anon, it's a simple question

>So... What is your opinion on 3D?
I rather like it, 3d models that is. 3D animation just bores me these days.
>Do you use it at all?
I got down all the basics for modeling in Blender, but then I decided to focus far more on my draftsmanship before focusing too much on 3D... that was over a year ago, lol. Guess I'll need to relearn it.
>Is it easier to 2D?
Actually creating something? Nah, 3D is clearly going to be harder/tedious.
Though once you have your finished model, you can just repose it, even without adding any bones, and just make a good number of pictures quickly.
So there's positives and negatives.
Thought if your going to ask us what to learn, I'd say start with 2D. Your abilities in 3D are essentially just an extension of your 2D abilities.

It's not confrontational. If that's the reason for asking the question then switching isn't the solution because the real difficulty is the lack of discipline.

I love it as a consumer, I think 3D environments specifically look really cool. models/animations are also cool. I wish there was a booru for 3d renders specifically
>Do you use it at all?
I've been trying to get into it because I do wanna make some games, its been fucking me up though. I think my combined effort when trying to learn it is like a few days worth though so basically not at all.
>Is it easier to 2D?
i've been drawing on and off since I was a kid so while it was still hard as hell it never felt "alien" to me, 3d however feels alien as hell but I reaaaaally wanna get a basic understanding one day

After going to school for animation the biggest lie Studios ever sold people was that 3d was less time consuming and easier than 2d. The only reason 3d suffering is put up with is because it appeals to the general audiences who find 2d too childish to shamelessly watch. Everything about 3d is pure soulless slop and extra work to mimic a franction of what you could just simply draw and call a day and the only people who enjoy it as a preferred medium to work with are people who can't draw well or hate drawing but want to create so they use it as cope. Its also how studios cheap out on having to teach new hire how to draw in a specific style for a project

>So... What is your opinion on 3D?
It's an artistic medium of its own like 2D
>Do you use it at all?
I'm actually learning 3D Animation in Blender right now
>Is it easier to 2D?
Fuck no. Not only is the barrier of entry higher cause you need a good GPU and other expensive equipment. Learning and making stuff is so tedious and not as fun compared to 2D.

It depends on the amount of detail you're creating, yeah? Personal 3D software and blender have been around for ages, and people with mid-spec pc's have been creating 3D renders and animation for some time now, so you can probably do decent 3D stuff with a low spec computer these days - just with slower rendering.
Then again, with the explosion in prices for computer parts (and everything else), I guess you're right either way.

>There are people that literally overpaint over the 3D models they made.
1) Give examples
2) I suspected this to be true since you can generate references fast and respective is not a problem.

>After doing 3D for a couple of years I have come to appreciate 2D much more for how straightforward it is in comparison
I tried 3D and it is easier. Simply because you do not need to deal with perspective.
However it really depends what program you master and the learning curve for every program is very big.
For example this free VR program makes modeling turbo obvious.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJeMvXv0XxQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhtGEZOValM
The program is obvious and even if you fuck around in it you can create nearly perfect (for cartoons) models. Even if they are fucked up a little simply import the model into blender and place in a generic scene to get a free reference or free trace or free shit to paint over.
The limitations of this is that it needs ungodly amounts of ram so 32 is a minimum and better look at 64 or 128! And if you make to much geometry it will crash or lag.
Yes there are tricks to it to make the workflow easier however it literally gives you a obvious start unlike blender where you need 6h of tutorials(who are all terrible and made by incompetent idiots) to even get started and you curse your screen why you can not simply sculpt normally a face and must deal with this retarded
>2D tools to manipulate 3D object
>sculpting is extrusion alongside normal vectors.
>twist your 2D view port to this retarded angel to extrude it or it looks like cancer.

The program medium gives you 3D tools for a 3D environment and it is voxels not this retarded polygons shit. To explain why you want voxels AKA 3D pixels imagine your 2D drawing program is only vector based and you must twist these vector primitives like circles and cubes to get what you want.
Like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN1aEPdJO_0
Can you do it?
YES.
Is it fun?
Not for most people.
Then continuing the analogy some people can spam these primitives to get the outline of the body they want and then try to fix this somehow. This is why polygon modeling is so fucked. However voxels require a insanely powerful computer and special 3D tools.
I like blender however it is more a CAD program to create geometric shapes then an art program and the sculpting is ass.
3D requires more of everything.
More computer power.
And you are dealing with more properties like rotation and movement in another axis.
This is not a problem if you are doing geometric primitives however it becomes a problem if you are trying to make a face.
Also bonus for the analogy since polygons are nothing like pixels if you open your object it will break generating problems that you have no idea how to solve. Imagine if you damaged the mathematical primitive in your vector program and now it is fucked.
PS: the most fucked state is that there is no real replacement for medium who is abandoned and most people who are into voxel modeling do not use this scale of voxels they use retarded pixel art mini minecraft cubes shit!
If you have the money you can buy a facebook/meta quest and you need also a dedicated gaming PC for it who you have or need to buy. The benefit of 2D is that it is easy to start since only a simple computer or paper.
However medium VR is so good yous you can learn the master wizard knowledge what blender objects to twist to add tentacles to your scene or you can literally draw in the air whatever you want.

>give examples
They set up in 3D the environment, at least partially, and the characters (actual previosly modeled characters, not mannequins).
Then the result is transferred to any kind of painting program, like Photoshop, and overpainted mostly with blend modes such as multiply and overlay.

>3D Animation
>Fuck no. Not only is the barrier of entry higher cause you need a good GPU and other expensive equipment
I see your problem here.
The biggest lie of blender is that it is for animation. 3D animation is very very very unsatifying.
1)Make something
2)Watch it render frame by frame for 90 minutes
3) walk away
4) come back home to check the result
5) it is unsatisfying and you lost all interest
6) Change your project to make it look better
7) Go to 2
In contrast while blender requires a gaming PC you can 3D model like there is no tomorrow.
Look what I made.
Yes it takes minutes to make this animating it the way I wanted will take 30 minutes and look like cancer. So here have a OBS of my screen in the preview.
You cna make all these alien geometric things or objects, swords stuff like this. Blender is more for CAD like modeling. You should look into 3D modeling not animation.

Going 3d after doing mostly 2d makes me realize what clusterfuck that is Blender eventhough you could use it for a lot of amazing things. Simply because 90% of the stuff available in Blender aren't going to be used if you just stick with one discipline of 3d (modelling, animation, sculpting, texturing, etc). And the skills for one stack requires you to know another sets of skills from another vertical slice of the stack and vice versa.
But once you've learnt something it become much easier to get better at it since you don't have to keep every information you have in your head. Just offload it to the software. But there's tons of tedious work that doesn't need much skill to do but instead just lots of patience (animation for example)

3D animation could either be rotoscoping animations, video mocap (you can do this with an iphone nowadays) and smoothing it out, or traditional keyframing. There are some softwares that focuses more on animation like iClone which I'm playing around with right now. It's more fun since you can combine existing mocaps and then fine tune everything when the motion is just about right, compared to keyframing every single new animations by hand. Imo with Blendet im more interested in just simply creating scenes for comic/manga/illustrations

I downloaded Blender because I wanted to learn how to create 3D models and pose video game characters. After completing the infamous donut tutorial and posing a fancy 3D model I realized that my PC is too weak for this shit. I will try an older version of Blender, but I'm still disappointed.

3D is the superior art form. as in: you will be able to do infinitely more with 3D tools like blender than you ever could doing digital paintings.
of course, the main downside is that 3D animation and modeling are pain in the asses, both in time spent fiddling with nodes/textures/rigging and and effort needed to set up assets AND that it's a confusing and unintuitive medium.
the other issue is that 3D modeling has technical constraints for the average home user that carry over into the 21st century, unlike something like krita or procreate where you can draw on a 4K canvas on the typical consumer PC. you will need to sacrifice either complexity, money, and/or time to get something done with 3D and it's brutal to render something for 8 hours in Cycles just to realize there was some bullshit with clothes not following the body during keyframes.
that being said, if i could make a magic wish with a genie to be either a master painter or a blenderfag, i would pick 3D modeling 100% just because i know i could do almost anything if i could intuitively understand what i was doing.
>>7911229
3D is easier for those of us who can't draw, mainly because animation is far easier than modeling, which is why modelers will charge $1000 for a custom character but i can hire an animator from russia to make me mini porn loops for $60 per piece using existing models. i made my first walk cycle before i even knew about packing texture files.

My issue with 3D is that I just don't understand the underlying parts of it
Like when someone says X has "good topology" or Y has "bad topology", but then professional game models are covered in tris (yes IK the engine does that, but a lot have tris that would never translate to quads, especially in older games)
I can make and texture a model that looks nice, but then I go to post it and get told I have bad topology if I post the mesh
>>
>>7917100
>especially in older games
There's your answer.
In olden times, the need to optimize overrode other concerns like perfect topology. Only so much you can do when your model can have like 400 tris max.
It was also a newer art form, and the theory for how to do things "correctly" was less advanced, read: there was less dogma
Topology is somewhat overrated, yes it's great if you can make perfect topo but it doesn't matter as much as people make it out to be. It's the go to critique for people who don't know what they're talking about kind of like "you should work on your anatomy" said by someone who knows jack shit about anatomy themselves.

I mean, if you can color and paint maybe a week or so
It's just box-modeling, the hard part of low poly is painting because it's what carries it

I'm a 2D artist who messed around blender for about a week. My goal was to make a 2D looking 3D scene based of a certain cartoon girl's bedroom. Pic related is what I managed to create.
I could see a lot of potential in 3D, and it could be very useful to use for a consistent background reference of a room or something like that. I can't say its easier than 2D, but the potential is huge.
