You write it down anywhere where you easily can look back at it, a small notebook, whatever.
Then you draw and if you are not sure about anything, you back to your notes to remember how it's supposed to be.
You have to draw again and again, until it finally clicks and you internalized the proportions.

Back then I mostly just went with my guts and feeling when I drew. You don't have to memorize the exact proportions to realize when something looks off. It`s definitely beneficial but I would say being able to listen to your intuition is more important than having knowledge when drawing. Intuition is very important in art. It just tells you when something looks off.

Here's what you need to remember:

>wingspan = height
>crotch = midpoint of the body
>shoulders = two heads wide
>head to crotch = four heads
>bottom part of the knees = midpoint of the crotch and heels
>eyes = midpoint of the head

Rather than remembering it all as head lengths, use landmarks instead.
For example;
The elbows fall at about the where the bellybutton is.
The wrists falls at where the pelvis is (the halfway mark).
The hands are on the thighs.
The Ribcage ends halfway between the pelvis and the collar bone.
The bellybutton is usually slightly beneath ribcage, and can usually be intuited.
The nipples are roughly halfway between the bottom of the ribcage and the collarbone.
Of course, you still need to use head lengths to some extent, like finding the collarbone, which is 1/4 heads (the length of the nose to the chin) beneath the head.

If this really isn't gelling with you, you can try and find other alternative drawing methods, though I'm not sure what's out there besides the head based proportions methods, but I'm sure others exist. Maybe the Riley method? I know he has a strange method for drawing heads, maybe his methods for the figure is also strange and non-head based?
