I got my internet cut off by my landlord (they were providing) when I forgot to use VPN for direct download, not even torrent. Had to pay myself from a different ISP after that and triple check everything is enabled. It's a criminal (not civil) offense, you can go to jail for several years. I was lucky nothing else happened. I thought the discourse around this was really interesting to see. It's such a cultural divide that it almost feels like both sides are talking to aliens.
From what I gathered, Japanese otaku have a strange symbiotic relationship with corporations, where there is a sort of mutual respect for each other. Breaking that relationship is seen as ridiculously taboo in the same way it would be seen as taboo to insult the mom and pop store that goes out of their way to provide their best service and gives back as much as they can to their community. Fan doujins and games are allowed and encouraged, older systems and games are super cheap and plentiful. Why would you want to go out of your way to fuck them over? We're all in this together, aren't we?

But on the other hand, westerners are shown negative respect by corporations, including Japanese ones and resent the fuck out of corporations as a whole because of it. Fan animations and games get copyright struck and banished into the shadow realm, older systems and games are stupidly expensive and rare as fuck to the point of being nonexistent. And corporations do everything within their power to fuck over the consumer as hard as they possibly can. In Japan you could petition a corporation to bring back servers for an old game with just a few people, but forget the fuck about it if you're anywhere else in the world. So Japanese people are confused and enraged by piracy or media preservation because they just can't comprehend that a corporation wouldn't be willing to provide a service or product if Otaku wanted it.
