I say this as like 1/64 Cherokee or whatever (a very pale 1/8 Ojibwe) - there are certain obvious benefits, like free healthcare, the opportunity to open a casino and take money back by the fistful - allowing for a rez to become a fairly modern, if not thriving, community just from casino profits. There's also a bunch of negatives stemming from us (Canadians) being shitty people - like the parts of the Indian Act legally diminishing the rights and freedoms of the indigenous, to the point where oversight was almost completely stripped away on the residential school systems and things like electric chairs were used for sport and profit (Fort Albany - St. Anne's if you want to look it up).
