As for why EoSD is the best, it's basically a PC-98 game but with the atmosphere and general vibe of a Windows game. Basically the best of both worlds, especially since the setting was still loosely defined enough that you could have a character like Sakuya and a location like the SDM appearing without it feeling out of place or needing an explanation.

For what I mean by this, it was the last game in the series where it features Western characters as the main plot point. Afterward the Japanese and other eastern elements that are relevant in Japan are the most dominant (as should).

If they do play the games it is usually just EOSD, the Steam games, or the other windows gen 1 games. Everything else may as well not exist to anyone who isn't a hardcore fan.
