Discussion question: what is your favorite grip material? Do you enjoy stacked leather? Wood? What about machine knurling on steel? That looks cool, right? How about polymers and rubberized textures. What is the Magpul MOE+ grip of Knives?

Sent the Nemesis IV and UDT I got back. Yeah the bronze/apoc was "rarer" but kinda useless and I'd feel bad hotrodding a non stock model. UDT also kinda sucked with no way to lock the blade from opening so anything brushes that button and it'll snap open. Getting my intended order next week. Half heartedly thinking abouyt the triangle locking tab on the blade and how when you fire it you have to hold the button for the duration of the firing or else it would scratch the blade and how maybe triangular ramp would be better. Retracting the blade the locking tab would ride up the ramp and fall into place, and you could make the unlock tab a little shorter so once it cleared the top of the ramp, even if you let go, the top would be unlikely to reach the blade proper.
But for realsies I have a really dumb fucking idea of trying to source a 2nd charging handle and still trying to let you put a small loop around it or something like that, with a sheath that has a button or hook so you could operate the knife 1-handed, hook the loop over the button or hook, and retract it without needing a 2nd hand. That and maybe a stronger spring with potentially a thin insert of rubber to stop damaging the frame at the top. Cause yeah when I played with the Nemesis I did get, it fired closer to a Benchmade Infidel almost 10 years without warranty service. Which is to say my dedicated box cutting benchmade from last thread.

Yeah, I really do hope Tony makes a version with a rear lock of some sort, like Benchmades'. Would carry mine a lot more.

Why isn't this "beaver" style skinning knife more popular? Seems pretty useful for both heavier tasks like deer but also useful for fish you'd generally skin rather than descale like halibut or catfish. It seems like basically a modern fish slicing knife you can reasonably pack with you.

based. I still haven't made my own. I really should, since no knife seems to be exactly what I want.
>rhombic blade profile
>full scandi grind, no secondary bevel
>birch bark handle
>small brass bolsters
>traditional sheathe with the leather cord belt loop and not a modern belt loop
>has to have the little dingus at the tip of the sheathe, I don't want any circumcised sheathes

I've seen lever locks before, but this one looks kinda funky. Not a fan of the grip scales and frankly I'm sick of weird ass G10 patterns or cringe weird gas station designs on expensive knives. Gimme good wood inlays or plain metal scales. Regardless, this looks kinda cool and if I get bored as fuck I may pick one up just to play with the action but I wish it had a thumb stud for opening. I just like different mechanical principles. And yes, I do own multiple Schmidt Rubin/K31s and enjoy racking the bolt on them and really want a Pederson rifle and Mateba 6 Unica just to play with the actions.

Probably. I don't even know if I want the knife so much as I want those toys from pre-school where you have all those gears and levers on a pegboard. As outdated and jank as it is, my Infidel being able to be operated with a single finger placement change to deploy/retract the blade does actually have merit. Combat Troodon objectively nicer, but I've found the trigger is just the wrong combination of travel distance and spring pressure that I can never get the hang of it. It's a long push but no real wall, just ramping force so you can't muscle memory an abrupt opening. Heretic Cleric II might have a weaker spring but the push is a lot shorter with a lot more immediate force and that works a lot nicer.
Up to me I want a D/A OTF that has an extremely stiff but short action ideally with a single screw right in the center so you can remove the switch/trigger/etc and clean stuff out of the channel easier. I don't want a lot of travel time or fidgeting to deploy and retract, I want a hard as fuck strong push and strong spring that I can spend an hour getting to be able to fire and retract crazy fast.
I'll give the SOCOM Bravo points because you can open with the thumb stud, use a finger to unlock the frame, and close against your leg as well. Amphibian needs wider tabs to be able to do the same, haven't gotten a SOCOM Elite yet but depends on which locking system you get I suppose though I'd say the Amphibian is still my go-to daily carry recommendation for anyone who is cool with a 4" blade.

What's better between Glock 78 or 81, Smith & Wesson M&P Special Ops, Boker Magnum M-Spec or Survivalist?
Just like the look of those big military knives from the movies and willing to put 50 euros.
I don't browse this board, sorry if the answer is obvious.
>>
>>64967947
I sharpened one of these last year for my cousin who is into trapping. It came basically with none to minimal edge, butter knife like. The rounded tip isn't meant to really slice stuff, more to get in-between the fat and the skin. So I didn't sharpen the tip much as you don't want it too sharp or you'll slice the skin/hide when trying to separate them from each other.
>>
>>64969796
I don't know much on those models specifically but S&W is gonna use white label/oem maker, probably chinese or indian, for their knives since they don't make them themselves. Boker has theirs made in Asia per their website.
It LOOKS like Glock makes/made theirs in-house which IMO wins by default. Supposedly a 1095 steel. I would go for the 78 over the 81, you'll almost never use the serrations, those serrations look kinda shitty, and that makes it harder to palm the spine for more leverage if needed and would more than likely tear your clothing when you are not paying attention and it wears or catches on fabric.
Varusteleka has model 78s for $51 here: https://varusteleka.com/en-us/products/glock-fm-78-field-knife, this is personally what I'd get. It doesnt look like a John Rambo knife but a folding leatherman with pliers, can opener, some saw blades, etc. is going to be significantly more useful than a big knife with a serrated back anyways.

I made a Puukko(handle) and sheathe in elementary school. I remember sewing the sheathe together made my hands bleed.
>>
>>64970162
I got this Puukko type thing from a Danish antique seller. Hasn't arrived yet. IIRC the maker is some Swedish or Finngolian cutler. Handle is carved bone.
IDGAF about the blade but I really like that grip (why I got it), do you think there is a way to have someone carefully un-peen the blade and get a nice modern one put in? I want to do a free-hand tooled leather sheath to go with it. 10cm blade iirc, looks lovely.

Glock 78 if you're actually going to use it innawoods. S&W and Boker Magnum are just branded Asian shit.
If you just want a wall-hanger to collect because you like movies, then the KABAR isn't total shit, and the Buck 119/120 is pretty iconic as well as a decent knife.

Do you have any leather conditioner? You can use a stick or something to put some in. If you oil your blade a bit of oil will do it some good as well, just don't overdo it. You can saran wrap your blade, put conditioner or any balm+wax on top, and insert the blade if you want.
>>
>>
>>64973706
That should work fine, you can put it on a paper towel and use a stick or even the blade to press it into corners and stuff. And you can stuff a paper towel in there to soak up extra as well if you overdo it

So I got my replacement package today for the Socom Elite & Nemesis IV. This time I did get the Socom Elite (kinda meh to be honest, hard to actuate the thumb stud) but instead of a Nemesis IV I got a HALO IV. I'm weird about wanting >=4" blades or I wouldn't be too upset. But there's a fairly significant price difference between the HALO and Nemesis.
Having handled both now, the Halo spring is a lot more significant. I think the Combat Troodon doesnt have the hardest spring but it carries the most momentum IMO. Frankly the Heretic Cleric 2 is my favorite as far as deployment. That short heavy throw isnt for everyone but it's less space for dirt/debris and the easiest to move your thumb back and forth. As long as you had a locking switch a 2-position literal switch you could ride around a pivot with your thumb like you are turning on the lights would be fun.
Now we wait for the continuing adventures of "anon just wants a basic bitch Nemesis IV"

No one NEEDS a Microtech, they have fairly good practical knives but are otherwise status symbols. Buying a knockoff of a status symbol is embarrassing. I'll be the first to tell you nothing wrong with never owning one, but if you get a knock-off and pretend like it is the real deal that's probably the worst thing you can do with them. Get a Medford if you want something borderline indestructible.

>buying clones is bad
1-800-COME-ON-NOW. If I want a solid OTF, why wouldn't I save my money and buy the Chinese clone of the hilariously overpriced knife? You may as well be saying that you're buying cheap Bowie is embarrassing when you should have bought a handmade, cold forged artis-anal Bowie with a 10 month lead time.

Theres a lot more in between those two price points and some great value. Cobratec, Kershaw, Hogue, Axial... All cheaper than MT. Theres probably some other chinese makers I just haven't kept up. An Axial Shift V3 just sold for $130 lnib on reddit. And unlike the clone you might actually know what steel you're getting.

Respect to your friend, for all the better designs people have, including myself, how many of us actually commit?
I think there is some potential here but the knives look like they are in a weird spot. Top one looks the best because it has the most consistent look. The Medford type fullers and crossguard just look too futuristic/sci fi. If he wants a more classic look I would change those/maybe make the crossguard a bolster or even part of the grip with the tang+grip sandwich being a nicer crossguard.
Someone already mentioned EDC/the crossguard and I think if he is open to feedback, angling the spine crossguard like picrel (i am not an artist) might be better. Look at how Microtech does their amphibian and socom series where the back of the grip flows into the spine allowing for a good thumb on back placement. From there just extend that curve tastefully outwards. DESU Less sure on any front crossguard although you could do a deliberately recessed choil that flares outwards a bit like the part before the cutwork in the crossguard and that would be good enough for most things.
Really this feels like it cant decide if it wants to be an old school bayonet type thing or a more modern knife and it doesnt appeal to either crowd. The crossguard being hollow seems kinda dumb IMO. If he insists on protruding ones at least make them solid or find some possible purpose for them like a bottle opener. Shit as wide as they are you could basically have a swiss army knife's worth of tools held in place there. I can see the top and bottom with some tweaking looking really damn cool in an Avatar/Titanfall II sorta way. Maybe extend the blade a little bit, add a bit of recurve bowie to it. I've always wanted a thick 6-8mm barstock blade where the false edge is extremely hollowground so you can use it for work that needs a very sharp blade. Grinding looks good if a bit basic but I admit I love harpoon and recurve visually.
Really good first drafts!
>>
>>
>>
>>64982818
Hard to say.
The guardian tactical apex blows the rest away in slicing performance and sharpening life, both owed to the deep hollow grind. Closest thing to a complaint has to be the awkward glass breaker that is this strange pronged square that rattles about.
The Scout has a very nice harpoon shape and is also slicier than everything else except the apex. Super smooth action and solid grippy ergos. Feels the best in reverse grip out of them all.
Ultratech has the best aesthetics and the action is really smooth once broken in properly; it goes from sort of feeling like finely polished wood rubbing together to oiled glass after enough time. Love the clip and the geometry at least of the single edges are adequate.
Axial Shift I have a bunch of spare parts for that I got from axials site so im the least careful with it by far. It's also got the most durable construction and toughest materials of the lot from handle to blade. Great beater knife. Scratch it up, drop it, stab it into car hoods, whatever. It can take it. Downsides are it's the thickest behind the edge besides the ultratech dagger and it's a little plain looking and you need two t8 tools to work with it.
I guess if I had to keep only one for life... it would be the axial purely due to durability + my pile of spare parts I can use to keep it going forever even if the company goes under our simply when they stop supporting the product.

>it goes from sort of feeling like finely polished wood rubbing together to oiled glass after enough time
If you take it apart and fiddle with it, it's so smooth. Ray has a proof-run ZBP that he used basically every day and that thing was so smooth it made my knees weak.

Why serrated edge on the dagger?
Isn't it defeating the whole purpose?
A dagger with long slim blade, perfect for fast leathal stab.
Oh and don't forget to add vidya serrations on both sides so this fucker could snag on clothes every time when used as intended.
Plus it looks meh. Straight edge looks better.

For a working knife, G10 is unbeatable. Good grip in all conditions, durable as fuck. and can be basically any shape or color you want. I carried a Benchmade 915 (bought before all the shitty stuff about Benchmade came out) for years while working in a mechanic/fab shop and got the handles covered in grease and filth and then cleaned them up with brakeen and scotchbrite or magic erasers on numerous occasions and the thing still looks new.
For a casual pocketknife, either machined titanium or horn/bone depending on the style and the situation.

Waste of money. if you are looking for your first ever fixed blade knife there are better options.
I would consider these army surplus at this point. its very outdated in the steel they use. its like you are buying someone else's problem.
Id spend 20 bucks more and get a Cold Steel Kobun, or Cold Steel SRK in VG10.
Cold Steel Kobun was used in Operation Jawbreaker which was a conflict in 2001 Afghanistan. Stop giving Glock retards your money for shit knives.

only the best for the boomtards.

I'd like to believe Tony's pride & ego would protect us from this particular grift. Obviously Mike was a little sleazeball who didn't really care about anything except making a quick buck, whatever that entailed. Marfione seems to be concerned with his legacy and that he's, among other things, perceived as a purveyor of quality cutlery. I think even the idea that he could get away with swapping any part of his knives with cheap chink crap to save a buck and that this would go unnoticed somehow would wound the pride he has for his own product.
Even if his company did it and started making more money as a result, his narcissistic soul would probably secretly be hoping, deep down, that such a swap is immediately recognized and called out.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>65002215
I don't see Tony faking the steel, that's one of the things that can almost undeniably be proven by the people he markets his knives to a la hypebeast STI 2011 John Wick type people. I mean he could, but a 1000+ plus marfione custom "damascus" (aka decorative lamination but designed to look natural) that turned out to have an acid etch making the pattern on 420 steel* would pretty much end him overnight worse than benchmade.
Where I'd see and do see if MT Fag is anything to go by (not doubting you man, it's just fair to want more data points), is in the QC aspect. If corners get cut there, literally in some cases, that is what would doom him. MT's reputation isnt necessarily on just new ideas but the execution of such. The machining is USUALLY very precise and accurate. But enough 'whoops dont know how that one escaped the QC batch' examples and a lack of confidence in their ability to make high-risk high-reward knives with complex parts and tight tolerances is what would fuck him over HARD. Kinda like Harley Davidson or Gucci or D&G where they chased becoming a lifestyle brand over being content with never being the most popular thing but appreciated by those who knew what good quality was.
If Microtech fails on its own aka not from a lawsuit or something, it'll be because tolerances are loose, screws get stripped, and things don't work nicely. It'll be like SIG where more and more people are sending more and more products for warranty.
Or more bluntly, if Microtech is LEGO, he better make sure he doesn't become Megablocks.
>*== in the 19th century, SOME European sabres actually had damascus patterns etched onto the blades. These are insanely rare today, because people invariably polished them over time and unlike normal "damascus" you can't just re etch without the decal/vinyl/whatever applied.

> Marfione seems to be concerned with his legacy and that he's, among other things, perceived as a purveyor of quality cutlery.
100%, from the few interactions I've had with him. He's also a MASSIVE fartsniffer and getting info up the chain was a Herculean task. For example, there's a ton of OTFs out there that have bad buttons on them because 1) couldn't get the info up fast enough and 2) Tony wasn't one to waste product.
What do I mean by bad? Well, if you see in the attached picture the two "rails" on the side of the button (the "track), those are what contacts the chassis. The more material, the more friction; physics 101. On certain knives, that button track, through one issue or another, is flat, which means it's in direct contact with the chassis which means more friction and more visual damage.
This is most especially bad on the Diracs simply due to the fact there's little material underneath anyway (FUCK DIRACS, ALL MY HOMIES HATE DIRACS), but we saw this issue arise with Cypher II buttons which are used on a number of other OTFs. Unfortunately, rather than re-machine them a few thousandths of an inch deeper, we were told to just use them and not polish them on sandpaper so they run better.

Most of the builders in the general shop were just 9-to-5ers and weren't super knife nerds like all of us. The guys in the customs shop were deep in the cult of personality *or* paid well enough / been there long enough to not want to talk about it. But you're absolutely right to want to trust but verify.
> But enough 'whoops dont know how that one escaped the QC batch'
I didn't really interact with the final QC guys beyond asking advice on how a knife feels to make sure I didn't have rejects, but from what little I saw, they were a bunch of eagle-eyed chaps who would blem stuff out for super tiny details that one could barely see.

Microtech also had dog shit m390 heats from at least 2019 to 2023, possibly longer, even though they fixed it, one wonders how they got away with it with people defending them for so long, but then one sees that BRK got away with much worse than that for several decades and realizes actually maybe m390 running 1-2 hrc under what's considered acceptable is a fucking nothingburger... The knives industry is a mess. Hard to point out any usa knife company that has simply stayed the course and done right by their reputation for a long period. Hogue maybe? They seem to know what they're doing. Good heats, good f&f, good value for money...

Two reasons, 1, 99% of people who buy a knife aren't going to use it for shit fancier than cutting cardboard, maybe some meat and veggies. Doubtful they'll do shit like cut or shave wood.
2. They made just enough knives with good treat that when people did the BESS test, they passed, so the "haters" got drowned out.

Isopropyl alcohol, goo gone, hot water and Dawn, etc.
Hot water and Dawn is the safe bet generally. After it's clean, lube the pivots and contact surfaces. Take some mineral oil, dab small amount on a paper tower or cloth, wipe on blade. Wipe blade with clean paper towel / cloth after.

I mean cardboard is basically a mild abrasive, it dulls knives surprisingly fast. Worked in a warehouse for a furniture store for a while and theres a reason they use disposable blade razor knives for cardboard. Had to use my own knife after I left my box knife at home, it was a civivi d2 steel elementum so nothing crazy steel-wise and that thing was very dull after a full day of breaking down cardboard.

I know bugout bags are fantasy scenarios that have a 0.0000001% chance of really happening. but why would you feel like you actually need a kurkri when a 5 inch outdoor fixed blade knife will do what you really need it to better than a knife that you would want for the jungles?
I dont even live in a jungle biome, most of north America is dense forests. you would be better off packing an axe at this rate. but realistically a bugout bag in my eyes should be something that is for 72 hours survival supplies that you can carry on your back. and saving 1.5 pounds for something else instead of getting a kurkri over a knife seems better. its not some african excursion. IDK what you are planning for bugout SHTF scenarios. but i would like to believe i need a knife for kindling, possibly batoning, making fire, and prepping food. id like to believe i could use it for building a shelter, but the bugging out for years shit is even more unrealistic than an emergency situation happening and you have to flee to another county or state.
i mean its purely hypothetical scenarios but try to keep it within the realm of reality.

it's not very expensive to make a bug-out bag so everyone should imo. It's easy to take prepping shit too far though, like all the retards who made bunkers full of dried/canned food and water post-ww2 expecting nuclear winter to happen any day, in the end they wasted so much money and ended up with nothing to show for it. Nothing ever happens, usually...
>>
>>65004878
i feel the most realistic reason to bugout is because of emergency situations like natural disasters. not red dawn were gonna go innawoods because ruskies are paratrooping in.
think of the california wildfires. people had like a couple hours to respond.
a couple people died waiting in traffic due to congestion.......get your shit together fast so you can immediately leave. thats the most redpilled scenario over chinese or russian invasions for a bugout bag.
>>
>>65004808
I live in a climate where an axe is not necessary but a beefy chopper or hatchet will do. The goal of a bugout bag is to contain as many necessities as possible while being as small and compact as possible. An axe isn’t very compact, you dumb fucking nigger :D
>>

neither is a machete. you absolute moron. i bet you dont even live somewhere that a machete would be better than a axe.
im clearly more sound of mind than you are. wanting to pack a 2 pound kurkri over a 5 inch fixed blade for a bugout bag.
you probably have a 300 dollar kurkri in your room with not jungle vines or coconuts to split with it for 3 thousand miles.

i feel like you probably live in kansas or some middle america state where all you have to worry about is corn, crop circles, and aliens. good think you packed a kukri instead of a smol knife. dont want retards on the internet to psych you out over your situation. bugging out must mean moving from your sisters vagina to your cousins living in farmville.
all you can do is cope at this point. its very clear to me that you are not a person that understands anything to do with surviving. let alone surviving in your local area.
i really hope you just walk away with this instead of being a prideful bastard totally ignorant. but more aware of your surroundings and what you realistically need to survive where you live.

a katana is a sword, but not all swords are katanas.
whats not to get, a kukri falls under the matchete family. my god i should get paid to teach retards.
so its ok if i refer to a kukri as a machete, the same way that i could refer to a katana as a sword.
maybe if you tried to read a book on survival instead of trying to teach people English you would understand what i am getting at. now wouldnt you.
>>
a kukri and a machete serve the same purpose
just like a hatchet and an axe serve the same purpose
a hatchet falls under the axe family. but in itself isnt an axe. but i could refer to a hatchet as an axe the same WAY I COULD REFER TO A KUKRI AS A MACHETE.
ok so a truck is a automobile, but not all automobiles are trucks.

ok so a kukri and a machete serve the same fundamental purpose. which would be clearing large bush or vegetation to create a path. the reason why they would be best fit for jungle environments because of their long edge that can take multiple pieces of bush, or vegetation with it.
so i really don't give a shit about your definition or the finer nuances for why a kukri has a bend in the blade. as if that really changes what they are both fundamentally designed for.
where axes are specifically designed for chopping wood. being that they have a short blade length, stubby heavy head that will clearly chop wood better than a machete/kukri.
so if you live in north America. Im saying its stupid to even buy a machete or kukri, as if you live in the jungles of Cambodia. where culturally thats where long stubby machete's are culturally developed.
so getting back to the original point. i think its stupid to want to take a machete with you for a SHTF scenario. being that you probably don't live in the bayou's of Louisiana where you could see thick vegetation. you would be better off with a 5 inch blade. and if you really are going to die on this hill that you would be doing a lot of wood chopping, then an axe is better than a kukri pound for pound if really think its going to make a difference in bugout scenarios to carry a heavier tool. then YOU MIGHT AS WELL CARRY THE BETTER ONE FOR YOUR AREA.

It was, in fact, the right one this time. Having played with it for awhile here is my report based on comparing to a Heretic Cleric II & CT gen 3:
>Frame is lighter and feels almost hollow compared to the other 2
>Spring feels significantly stronger than the first Nemesis IV I mistakenly got (this one has an 03/2026 date on it)
>Ranking bladeplay I would say that the Nemesis IV has a little bit up & down, but so little you have to grab the frame with 1 hand, the blade with 1 hand, and wiggle them deliberately. Side to side literally 0 bladeplay at all. Like ZBP levels. Combat Troodon is in 2nd place, about the same up and down, and miniscule side to side. Cleric II is in 3rd place but it is not at all a bad showing, just a bit more in all directions but still these 3 are miles above Benchmade and Kershaw and Guardian tactical. Excited for my Gen 2 ultratech to arrive to compare.
>The charging handle feels almost too delicate, worried about pulling it at an angle and causing stress snapping or induced wear, it wobbles a bit when it is fully pulled out and I'd rather a stronger locked track or something.
Either way this is basically a boutique bougie knife for people who already have enough knives to cover every other use case 10 times over so I can't judge too much. Still wish it had a clip or ability to screw in a collar that interfaced with the handle jumping with a pocket clip.
Picrel excludes the CT which went back in my inside jacket pocket.

Convex grinds are the natural end result of free hand sharpening. They also offer a stronger edge with minimal surface area friction or wear. On a knife used in camping, woodcraft, Bushcraft I prefer a convex. Personally I use a mouse pad and sand papers on 10xx knives to achieve the apple seed convex. I've had nothing but good luck with it.

For the Scarab 2 Gen 3 grip-tape, there's an issue with the deep blue S/E blades where they will fail to retract reliably and the blade has to be polished on the back leg. Usually we caught them before they went out to customers, but that depends on the training of people along the way. The Scarab's chunkier than the CT so big-handed people will enjoy it better. I can't tell you if this issue affected other chassis colors or not. YMMV with what you get.

personally I really like traditional puukkos, if you're willing to make your own sheathe the village smith knives from Juha Pettula are insane. He's got a PHD in metallurgy that he got just to make better knives.
They're relatively cheap and very simple, except for the blade itself. Differentially hardened, ground perfectly they have an insanely sharp and hard edge. If you like or are required to use a smaller blade like that, he makes one.

Scarab is ok for me, I think, hera 2 isn't small and I consider it just right in my hand, slightly thicker scarab should be no problem with my long fingers.
I found green ano scarab 2 gen3 with normal stonewash (or apocalyptic) clippoint blade. Seller want give me discount that I would like so I'll w8, maybe partly serrated version will appear, or tanto.
Smaller than Hera and CT gen 3, only Guardian recon 35 G2 speaks to me but I can't get it easily, at least without paying full EU price.
Another question about m390mk, I've heard heat treat was bit soft but they improved over time, my Hera is 4/24, seller said that his scarab was bought like 8/25, so heat treatment is soft on my Hera but that scarab should be fine because it's much later production? Am I right?

Some custom Chris Reeve thin grind shit or other small-batch folder manufacturer. I don't know any of them off the top of my head other than CRK, sorry. You'd have to hunt around and compare blade thicknesses and steel material to find the best pick for you.

one last question about Scarab 2 gen 3. Ive seen that some of them have 7075 chasis instead of 6065. Is there any easy way to tell with one is 7075, and with one is 6065 (like model numer or colors they used with 7075). Because many sellers just copy pase same stuff over and over or didnt tell witch grade of aluminium was used at all. Even microtech site dont state what grade was used. Googled few numbers and on one site it says its 7075, on other it says 6065 or just aluminium.

Check PVK or Eknives or EDCLifestyle and they can probably tell you explicitly what the material composition is when you order from them. I tend to get MTs from less general stores and more specific high end places like that just to guarantee they know what they are doing. I don't know what model numbers/etc off the top of my head but someone out there should.

I do think out the box spydercos are the sharpest, but the reasons being 1. different blade grind makes them a lot easier to sharpen generally and 2. their users are much more utilitarian and no nonsense generally. From outdoorsy guys to office drones, Spyderco is a great 'buy and turn off your brain' knife. My MTs and stuff, those can have retardedly complex grinds but also probably assume the end user knows either how to sharpen, where to go to have someone else sharpen, or doesn't even want them cunt hair cutting sharp because they are more display pieces. That's fine. I said it before but Spyderco to me is like the platonic ideal of the pocket knife as a concept. No frills, no secondary uses. Almost all models excepting length limitations legal anywhere. Sharp blade out of the box, affordable prices. God bless them and I mean that sincerely. I don't mind doing a little more work (currently polishing the frame of the nemesis for a deeper glossier finish, planning on doing H&K style white/red paint in the Fire and Safe letters, will sharpen the blade later as well), so MT works for me.

Always wanted to edc a fixed blade because some autist on /kg/ wrote a crazy shitpost about "fixies."
I'm legally allowed to edc whatever I want, but the Morakniv Eldris just looked perfect to me. Most other pocket-sized fixed blades look aggressive and soulless. Honestly the biggest thing compared to others. They have slim blades so the geometry's better.

Minus the aesthetic that's been cultivated by some with the same crowd that chants "Skateboarding isn't illegal!" and puts stickers on their lockers. They're fantastic knives and if they made more crossbar-style locks with a choil and a thumbstud I'd be more apt to buy one for myself. I just don't like the crowd that comes with it. If they made a re-badge and changed them slightly so it couldn't be detected as a spyderco from six miles off, I'd be down.

should i be worried about that? Microtech otf, bit of damage inside, in place where blade pin hits frame at open position, aluminium is slighltly deformed and anodization is gone

yeah, was bit dirty inside, amazing what simple cleaning can do for them. No cracks or anything like that, they really should use 7075 tho. Need to flush it with baliistol but not today, weather is super bad and im not going outside just to blow otf with air compressor

I got the Military 2 literally just to have one + Spyderco as a company is pretty low key but from what I've heard damn solid with the warranty. It feels bad to say "i dont like your knives because the profile of the blades looks fuck ugly to me" but at the same time it's true. Wonder if people make any custom G10/Carbon Fiber/etc grip scales for their knives that alter them significantly? Like fatter more round grips or textured/contoured differently? I don't mind the basic flat grips but Spyderco feels like they are almost made to have good mod support and I haven't seen much. Grinding off the thumb slot would make it harder to open unless you tapped a pitch for a thumb stud but that alone could really change the profile + a thumb rest for the back of the blade.
A shame those Japanese knives are all under 10cm, that's my autistic baseline for a pocket knife because I'm willing to trade pocket space for blade capability.
Oh also, on the Ultratech Gen 2 (works fine, no complaints, blade wiggles a bit but bladeplay in OTFs is a bit overhated and it is zeroing in on no bladeplay in general), the retract spring creaks like a motherfucker. I've already put a moderate amount of oil down the front and a few drops on the trigger open/closed but it still creaks. I don't care about the sound but never had one that made a sound like that. Any concern there with a bad heat treat on the spring or anything? Would post video but no sound. Wait I can catbox it, might do that later today.
If they still warranty Gen 2s I can send it in if that spring is a concern. Pocket clip is more delicate but at least its not like the combat troodon good lord.
Need to find someone who can machine some new parts for the Nemesis IV, maybe the guy who did aftermarket combat troodon triggers because I have some ideas I wanna try, either a smooth or slightly rounded but mostly flat trigger button, and a less stepped safety. Or at least both of those heat anodized a deep midnight blue

Been getting into auto knives. Should I get ein Hubertus? The steel type is 1.4034, which is essentially 420HC. For around the same price, I can get a perfectly good Ultratech with a clip point blade in M390, or whatever tf their proprietary M390 blend is. Idk, gimme some help, /kg/. Maybe just buy both?

The biggest attribute you should focus on if you are making thin knives is strength. S35VN isn't the strongest steel on the market to make hollow grind knives. which 14C28N or 420HC tend to be good steel choices when making a hollow grind knife. CRK uses MagnaCut now, which is stronger than S35VN with the same edge retention.
but we all know CRK customers are not buying a hollow grind knife to skin bucks with. they are buying them to skin Amazon packages with.
so yeah, if people are saying that S35VN isn't that great of a knife steel to choose when making hollow grind knives. they are right.
that and i hate CRK Sebenza. its a Reddit knife. A Buck's new Slim Heritage 110 undermines the Sebenza. and costs 2/5 the price. comes with the same steel. and is foundationally the same thing. a hunting knife that is for field dressing deer.
Should of bought a Buck.

The pic is a CT cuz I couldn't find a good Ultratech disassembly. You still have a "lock" on the Gen2 UTs, it's just different from a ZPB "blade lock".
If you neutral the blade (i.e. extend it, then hold the blade and retract the button so the blade is loose), and then move the button all the way forward and back, do you still hear the creaking? If yes, that's the spring for the locks. If no, that's the mainspring.
There's no real concern, it's just the spring moving against the chassis and slider.
>>65038335
Those older-style autos are pretty dope, would love to see a teardown and assembly vid because it's so neat. If you can find one that you like the looks of, it'll be a better conversation piece than a bog-standard Ultratech, though the UT Gen2 are on sale, and the Gen4 are silly easy to maintain...
>>65038522
> i hate CRK Sebenza. its a Reddit knife.
It's the pretentiousness of the owners that I can't stand. Yes, the Sebenza is probably a good pocket knife, but they're not the only ones using MagnaCut and titanium scales anymore, and their prices don't reflect that. Also the scales looks like they were cast or MIM.

I could probably tear one apart pretty easily, but the issue is putting it back together. The brass pins are flared like rivets, so I'll need to grind off one end before I knock them out. To put it back together, I'd need to use completely new brass rivets and peen the new brass pins back into place. They use German silver bolsters and scale materials like bone, horn, stag antler, wood, or micarta. Most of these run a high risk of cracking, so I'll look for wood or micarta.

Tbh, I was helping my pops wallpaper the bathroom with my DLC PM2, and the wallpaper glue slightly marred the DLC. Not really sure I prefer the DLCed blades to the satin ones.
>>
>>65039677
It is in fact the lock spring. Sorry, thought I had confused you talking about the nemesis iv as well/photo of both of them and you were referring to the literal locking mechanism on the Nemesis which ngl is kinda backwards IMO, I'd prefer slide forward to fire, slide back for safe especially since a well fitted sheath would engage the safety automatically.
Just a tiny bit of creaking while it free floats, never had that before so I was curious.
Those old autos look nice but that blade looks too thin to do anything but ye olde pen knife type stuff. Would be easy to sharpen at least.

Now that I got bored and polished the hardcoat aluminum frame mostly (fuck MT for the amount of facets and greeble), I am looking into some of the modifications I wanna do.
I'll post the screencap from the yt disassembly again because I'm not taking mine apart yet, but do you know where I could get either a 2nd or a single stronger coil spring? Looking at the HALO disassembly and I assume it is probably the same size spring diameter-wise. That's really the only internal part I can add but looking into a ~1mm thin piece of rubber or so at the top inside corner to prevent the tiny amount of play there is (would only work in 1 direction, the bottom frame is basically flat).
Otherwise I'm reaching out to the guy who did the tritium insert CTmk3 switches to see what it'd cost to get a different safety slide and trigger button milled. Cant decide on the button between slightly domed/flat or if I want some texture, same on the safety slide, but definitely less CNC steps than the stock one. Charging handle is probably aluminum since if it were titanium I feel like it'd be mentioned somewhere. Would like to get the exposed part anodized as well.
Still a noticeable delay between firing and the inertia of the blade, would like to fix that if I can. There's a ~.75-1mm overhang on the ricasso of the blade before the scallop in begins, a collar that locks over the front almost like Austrian cavalry sabres would possibly provide more reinforcement if using a stronger spring, would be cooler if the collar had a gas pedal type thing that would let you engage the lever you need to hold when retracting. On that, as cool as the knife is, the lever on the side is completely exposed, about 1mm x 6-9mm wide rectangular channel where dirt can get in there at any time. Seems like a huge oversight to not have the bottom part AKA the opposite direction you push the tab have some sort of cover, even a rubber insert.
>Hopefully I can find a good spring

>do you know where I could get either a 2nd or a single stronger coil spring
Easiest way off the top of my head if you is to get a 2nd spring and start cutting coils off.
Cut coils.
Reassemble.
Try it out.
Disassemble it.
Cut coils
etc.

No. I use some prehistoric carbon steel. It's still tougher than everything else, holds an edge great, and just needs a five second strop to get back to razor sharp.
Stainless fags seriously contort themselves around in circles to get the best steel when it was figured out an eternity ago. All you have to do is not use your knife in salt water (which nobody does anyway) and you're set.

I exclusively use steel forged before the atomic bomb was invented because the radiation introduced by atomic weapon testing & use interferes with the crystalline structure of steel.

i bought one a while back for the same reason. if you are rich then why not buy another piece of shit to fuck with but if money is tight i would spend it elsewhere. its tough but its more of a pry bar with a point than a knife. the edge geometry is shit and mine came with uneven grinds on the bevel from the factor. i dont know what basic stuff you want to do but for $30 you can get a cold steel SRK or SOG sealpup which is a million times more useful. the glock knife is not a slicer its really just a thick spike bayonet with some texturing on the spine. if you want something for cutting and chopping i would look elsewere. even if you jsut want a thick bayonet stabber i would just get an actual M7 bayonet because at least you can attach that to your rifle. i keep my glock knife in a bin with my other knives and i never use it and its not worth enough to bother reselling. maybe ill use it for photos with glock pistols some day

Just got my hands on the new version of the gt apex with no glass breaker, no inlays, and magnacut. Surprising to see the tip doesnt become nearly as thin as it does on the magnamax. Unclear if thats just manufacturing variance or intentional. To be clear it's still more acute than a microtech, but my other apex comes to a literal sewing needle like tip.
Otherwise, same action, same milling, very slightly lower diamond patterns on the handle vs the inlay, no weird jiggling square glass breaker is an ergos improvement, much fewer screws on the chassis. Worth it for $309.

I pulled the trigger on one, too. Price made it hard to say no. I saw one review say it's very nice, but the blade is pretty loose so it has a lot of play. Did you find that to be the case? Want to know if I should warranty mine when it comes in should the same issue be present.
>>
>>65066919
Didn't check that before but there is some play in both, about the same amount, maybe a little more than my ultratech gen 4s, but as always not enough to affect function. I'm a bad person to ask about this because i don't care about blade play, it never bothered me; if anything more play means more reliable action.
imo "loose and a lot of play" is a strong exaggeration but that guy's standards are a mystery; maybe he's only ever owned ZBP's and Deadlocks before this. I think it's fine.

Any current close replacements of the discontinued Buck 818 Apex as an ultra light daily basic carry blade?
Something light, with a skeleton frame because I feel that aids in grip in all conditions, Drop point, and Frame lock? mine fell out of a hole in my pocket today and was unfortunately lost.

you're mostly going to be looking at some knives that are a bad value because of those requirements; specifically the skeletonized frame. so long as you're cool with that: gerber paraframe, crkt m16, civivi perf (probably the best compromise), leatherman skeletool kb (the knife-only model)
