It's how the were able to make the MG42 domestically and lots of Mausers as well as 8mm Mauser. They had lots of WW2 surplus, ability to make new, and their doctrine was not to rely on USSR or NATO so had massive stockpiles of WW2, NATO, and Soviet calibers or weapons able to use those calibers. It's why their SKS can shoot NATO rifle grenades.

Didn't make sense for them to use a dead 30-06 when NATO had already switched to 7.62 NATO. They already got free German tech, Soviets were giving out their tech for cheap, and they could just copy Soviet or NATO small arms when they wanted. They weren't even licensed to build AKs. It's why their AKs are all sorts of funky.

Yugoslavia was politically and militarily somewhere between the East and West, which is why they had both weapons and vehicles from both.
The nation as it was back then was forged in the flames of WW2, and the group which came out on top were a socialist kind based in Serbia. They had fought with all kinds of arms, and what they had decided to standardize on at the time as their main rifle cartridge was 7.92x57mm Mauser, and this happened before 7.62x51mm NATO was even a thing.

The latter isn't really true, M2 Ball is extremely similar to 7.62mm NATO, which is why you can just rebarrel an M1 Garand rifle to the new cartridge, add in a plastic spacer in the magazine, and it'll work, you can even use the original .30-06 en-bloc clips, the NATO cartridge fits and feeds in them.

For some oddball examples, the Norwegians had K98ks as war reparations, and converted a few thousand of them to both .30-06 and 7.62mm NATO, and down in Brazil, police are still today rocking old Madsen LMGs converted from 7mm Mauser to 7.62mm NATO.

They were using 8x57 post WWI and just stuck with it until the breakup of Yugoslavia since they weren't part of NATO or the Warsaw Pact after WWII. Nearly half of Europe standardized on 8x57 after WWI due to the prevalence of Mausers as service rifles.

Oh no, it wasn't just K98s, those fuckers converted fucking MG34s into .30-06 from 8mm and THEN into 7.62x51.

Norway was in fact so peak during the cold war that they were running around effectively in US WW2 gear slightly done up with German guns converted to NATO cartridges alongside M1 Garands, G3 and M1 Carbines.

It's hard to see but the Norwegian camo jacket is basically just an M55 jacket with camo fabric. Their webbing gear was largely American hand me downs as well iirc. I think it just had new magazine pouches for G3s later.

Anyway, Yugoslavia was using 8mm Mauser for obvious reasons, not wanting to be too close to Soviets and having shit loads of old German tooling.

Yugoslavia adopted the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge in 1928 and had either bought, made, or inherited about 1,300,000 Mauser rifles in that caliber by 1941 when Germany invaded. The German defeat left Yugoslavia with probably as many ex-German rifles as theGermans had captured/looted during their occupation and manufacture of new rifles recommenced in 1948 alongside refurbishment of old rifles, and would continue until 1965. They also copied the German MG42 as their standard GPMG so It makes perfect sense that they would use 8x57 as a DMR cartridge.

If NATO hadn't happened the WEU would have adopted .280 British as a standard infantry cartridge and 8x57 for machine guns.

It was a rather good cartridge for its time, yeah. The 1903 Springfield rifle and .30-06 Springfield cartridge were both explicitly devised to make something which would be very similar to the Spanish Mauser and cartridge that the American military had faced earlier.
7.62x51mm NATO then being a shortened but ballistically extremely similar successor for .30-06 essentially makes the NATO cartridge a descendant of the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge.
