All they did was increase the velocity, not necessarily the bullet weight, which is why it failed. 45 Super should've specced a 300gr bullet. We like .45 because it's big and slow.

.40 S&W and .45 ACP are the two best semiauto handgun chamberings available for self defense, carry and urban CQ combat
>>
>>65192508
Hot take, one of the best things about .45 is that you can get it in heavier and larger guns which helps shrink the difference in felt recoil between it and the "good enough" crowd(doubly so for people with XL hands). Hot rodding .45 is a step in the wrong direction outside of maybe some hunting or large game defense niche uses, even that's debatable considering how well a 255gr +p hard cast works for those uses.

Multiple PDs reported that the 185gr +P outperformed standard hardball in their guns (plural of anecdote is not data etc.)
Though the original "dum dum" was a 200gr +P soft point, Speer makes a decent approximation of such with their modern G2 Gold Dot projos, haven't tested one yet but things might get a bit Planet Of The Apes this summer so we'll see.

Reminder .45 does more damage in Enlisted than 9mm (.30 also does more damage than 7.62)
>>
>>65194866
Of course it did. It’s broadly agreed upon by users and wound ballisticians that JHPs, many of which enlarge wound volume by 100+%, are substantially more effective than FMJ. But caliberlets and poors will screech “SOURCE??? WHERE’S THE DATA???” as if it weren’t self evident that a 0.8” hole which dwarfs two 0.32” holes stacked next to each other, is in fact more effective than a single 0.32” hole.

The way to get that 0.8” hole is to use 230 gr +P HST BTW. Gold Dot G2 has somewhat better post-barrier performance but one of the advantages of .45 is that it doesn’t need to make major concessions in performance against unprotected targets to work passably against auto glass to begin with.
>>
>>65194956
Nah get your 45 outa here ya smuck 25.acp is the master race bullet, hell its perfect for home defence if that is what you are using it for and compact enough to be a good concealed carry
>>
>>65194969
25. ACP is pretty effective for defending against a home yes, would question its form factor though.
>>
>>65194956
Are the HSTs better than the Rangers? The +P 230gr Ranger rounds expand up to a full inch(!!) in gel. Not sure how that translates to real world performance if at all.
There's a morbidly curious part of me that wants to run something like a 300gr lead SJHP in as hot loaded a case as possible just for sheer lulz. The fireball and recoil would be nasty af but the terminal effects would be even worse.
>>
>>65194983
The issue with the numbers on the expanded Rangers is that they’re counting the signature talons behind the leading meplat of the bullet. It’s believed that those talons may not contact tissue fully or at all for much of the path length because the temporary cavitation from the leading edge pushes the flesh out of the way.

Now when the bullet slows down and the TSC becomes smaller towards the end of the track the talons do help, the bullet is likely to have already traversed through most or all vital tissue in its path by then though.

HST tends to be a little larger when discounting the talons and historically also more consistent lot to lot, it seems the latter advantage may be eroding a bit (maybe Federal hasn’t kept on top of their replacement intervals for their skiving machinery) but generally I would still trust the HST more.

But honestly not a big difference, it has been remarked that the +P loadings of 230 gr Ranger-T are fast enough to expand the projectiles at close range even with a bad lot of ammo.
>>

Digits confirm. Thanks anon, I must be a boomer at heart ig cause I didn't get to live thru the "Black Talon" era but I love the idea of super instant death bullets.
>>
>>65194866
Have you ever heard the phrasecorrelation does not equal causation (its a nerdy phrase I know). It wasn't the fact that the bullet being lighter made it better; it was that hollow points were better than soft points when those departments decided to make the transition.

I still prefer 9mm because it's used on several different types of guns but .40 S&W and .45 ACP are neat in their own right
I like 40 out of a USP and 45 on a 1911 or a USP is great
And I would like to get a FN 545 or even a Glock 21
>>
>>65194983
I'd be cautious with winchesters ranger products in general. The first hurdle is making sure you're getting the right variety, of which there have been 4 or 5 different projectile designs marketed under the ranger name. Assuming you're looking at real ranger-Ts then you've got the issue the other anon mentioned about the questionable advantage of the talons given their location much of the time. On top of that and the bigger deal breaker for me is that the ranger-t is MUCH more prone to failures to expand than the HST. Also I've seen plenty of tests of hst where expansion ranged from .8-.9" iirc. Then there's availability, price, and QC to consider. The 230gr HST is more readily available, cheaper, and federal has had very few issues with that line of products.

As tempting as the memes are it's really hard to justify the rangers over the HST IMO

No. 5.7x28mm is objectively the best round out there right now. History is a flat circle. FN has been at the forefront of handgun technology every single time.

First to have a slide.
First to build pocket semi autos and develop the 25 ACP with JMB.
First with a high capacity 9mm in the hi power.
First with the 5.7x28 expanding upon the benefits of 9mm while increasing it's lethality.

FN has done more for handguns than any other company tbqhwy. 25 ACP, 32ACP, 380ACP, 5.7x28mm all exist because of that single company.

Yes it is. It's heritage runs back to the 1847 Colt Walker 10" barr'l designed to kill indian ponies at 200 yards. They shrunk it to .31 caliber in miniature = 1849 Colt pocket Model. (very low power, lousy accuracy) Then came the in-between .36 cal. 1851 Colt Navy Belt pistol.
Then the US Army had to have something kill a man at 100 yards = 1860 New Model Army. (called a .44 cal. but used.451 slugs) Then they went BP cartridge for the 1873 Single Action Army.
The US Army then switched to some .38 bullshit Model 1892 and that is what they had when they lost 400 soldiers to philippine rock-monkeys dual-wielding sharpened putty knives an wearing bamboo armor.
THE BEST WHITE MAN EVER LIVED = Blackjack Pershing who used the telegraph and rank to get all available .45 cal 1873s shipped over. THAT settled their hash. When came time for a semiauto they shot (dead) hanged guys, pigs and steers at the Chicago Stock Yards until they decided 350 pounds of KE + .45 slug was just right.
Not a fan of sword attacks and can't bullshit around with No Gun Zones or cocksucking lists of CCW holders. Viola = 3" Barreled 1860s reworked for 1849 Grips and grip frames. Green lasers and witches brew in the firing chambers. 180 grain pure lead slugs.

45 super didn't fail, its just not necessary for most situations so it never became mainstream. The extra blast and recoil aren't always worth it and you don't need 700 ft/lbs to poke holes in paper. Just the scratches on the barrels. They aren't consecutive sn numbers they are a dozen off.
All parts interchange so think of the beneficial effects = troubleshooting is greatly simplified,
First thing was after setting hammer down on new cap it refused to cock or advance = locked up. as held in sighting position - inside reciever a link comes off trigger and has a tricky little leaf spring/feeler gauge stock -part that when hammer is let up a short sturdy dowel pin can slide under it and "clink!" get under the tiny flat spring >>> and push on the pawl/hand that turns cylinder. >>> no cylinder turn = no hammer recock-ee.
I hope that makes sense! I bought a new teeny set of diamond Harbor Freight files and also their $10 rotary kit. The tiny leaf spring's trailing edge has a curve that makes it easy for it to turn around and push the short dowel it just clinked over.
Ever since no more problems. Even after cutting OEM trigger grip frames +main leaf springs shorter.
Each is a porky 40z/1.13Kg. They intentionally remind me of a son of sam special I used to have. My sister used to borrow it when working late. I will never forget the gratitutde and relief in her eyes when she blasted a bed of creek mud with it one time. There was mud and shit still coming down out of the trees 5,6,7 seconds later. Shit went ever where when100 fps 180 grain .44 hollow bas-loaded-backwards hit. Left a cool ring of lead around entire 1 foot crater. These both make craters withing an inch of green dot.
