Who were the best/most important minor allies of the Axis on the eastern front and why?

It seems to break down kinda like this:
1. Romania
>hundreds of thousands of troops contributed, did okay, tried to hold the flanks
1,5. Italy
>arguable if it should be on the list as a "minor" nation, but they sent the Italian 8th Army
2. Hungary
>sent its second army to the eastern front, got raped, but at least they tried
3. Finland
>punched above their weight but were a bit too focused on their own immediate goals and lost sight of the grander picture
4. Slovakia
>sent a few divisions, participation trophy?
5. Spain
>Blue division, relatively small amount of volunteers but very motivated
6. France
>see above, SS Charlemagne
7. Croatia
>Volunteers, Croatian Legion fought at Stalingrad
8. Belgium, Neverlands, Denmark, Norway
>similar to France and Spain, fought a bit and generally just went home and sat out the rest of the war after their tour was over though
9. Bulgaria
>actual axis member but just sent occupation troops for the balkans and no combat troops for the eastern front

Belgium had the Sturmbrigade „Wallonien“ which did very well in the East. Also Leon Degrelle who was quite a character.
>>
>>65210249
>Finland
>lost sight of the grander picture
The Finnish alliance was always a marriage of convenience and their only goal as a nation was preserving their sovereignty and democratic government from the Russians, which they achieved
>>
>>65210295
1. No, they didn't. They had to cede territory, pay reparations, allow restrictions against their sovereignty and had to base their entire diplomacy around not pissing off the soviets to remain formally independent.
2. Thinking they could just take care of their own little side-quest and everything else would work out on its own was retarded.
>>
>>65210295
This + Germans should have tried to be less worthless in Lapland if Murmansk and railroad were indeed important. Even SS was shit up there and got their shit kicked in by 18 year olds in 1944.
>>
>>65210307
It worked out, they didn't get turned into a SSR as revenge by the Russians and the German chimpout was manageable.
>>
>>65210295
>democratic government
You're projecting American values on Fins from 100 years ago. They mostly just didn't want to be ruled by Russians. Democracy was an afterthought and the alliance with Germany was a natural fit considering their history of cooperation.

The Swedish colonists in Finland did nothing wrong.

Fun fact, Finland was the only (axis affiliated) country that paid the reparations in full. Also, they couldn't get Marshall Aid, unlike Germany, thanks to the Soviets.

But the good thing that came out of it was to kickstart to the postwar industry and the foundations of the export industry as they have it now.

How di the soviets prevent that?
>But the good thing that came out of it was to kickstart to the postwar industry and the foundations of the export industry as they have it now.
Reminds me a bit of stories of the French industry in the 70s where they still used tons of machines looted from Germany after WWI while German companies tended to have much newer equipment simply because they had to replace the old machines.

Sven's right in this case though. I known it seems weird because they haven't been right a lot in the last century.
>>
>>65210339
Wouldn't surprise me if French unions killed anyone who suggested using newer, more efficient equipment.
>>
>>65210339
>How di the soviets prevent that?

The Soviet’s viewed the American economic program as a tool to divide Europe and vehemently opposed any US influence in Finland's affairs. So avoid being annexed like the Baltic states, Finland had to strictly adhere to a policy of neutrality to appeases the Soviet’s.
>>
>>65210330
Germans attempted to get Murmansk, not Finns. Germany controlled the north half of the country and there were only German troops there. Gerbirgsjägers and SS couldnt advance 100 km in 3 years. Maybe bring hatchets and shovels next time lmao

It's almost like Fins should've thought of the consequences of the greater war in the east failing and helped clean up their backyard instead of leaving it to the Germans.

>>65210311
What point are you even trying to make here? The Kola Peninsula was rightful Finnish clay, the Treaty of Tartu is gay and Fins lost Petsamo because they lost in WWII. Leaving Murmansk to the Soviets was stupid and bit Finland in the ass.

>>
>>65210494
People are saying Finnish WWII strategy was shortsighted and they're right, you're sperging out pretending they did nothing wrong. They should've viewed the war more holistically because their own fate was decided by how the entire war went and not just their small part of the front.

Its unreasonable to say Finland should have fought Germany's war for it. Finland already used all resources it had to push as deep as it could. >or take St. Petersburg in the South.
The Finns were both extremely close to St. Petersburg and could have sealed the ring around the city.
The Finns knew this, they chose to sit back and enjoy their gains and leave the entirety of the Eastern Front (Finland's fate was intertwined with German success and it was obvious) to the Germans to handle.
Objectively, Finland was a terrible ally. It was easily the most self-interested member of Germany's allies because the Finns had no intention of helping the Germans much in return. The victory at Tali Ihantala was only possible with MASSIVE German aid, which the Germans gave during Operation Bagration of all events, just for Finland to immediately peace out after being rescued. German aid is why Finland wasn't conquered
>>
Romania was the best due to oil and unlike all the others they actually achieved some things (despite horrid casualties) like conquering Odessa, having an active naval presence in the Black Sea and substantially supporting German efforts in Crimea. Antonescu was also loyal and not constantly trying to find the right moment to switch sides.

Hungary was bad and Germany supporting them in favor of Romania was a mistake as Hungary didn't replay the Vienna Awards and was of dubious loyalty.

Finland did their own thing and refused to do anything that amouted to leaving their doorstep. Nobody knows wtf they were even thinking, you want to take back your lands from the Soviets but when it comes to defeating the Soviets you're too scared to act? They're a meme.
>>
>>65210604
>Its unreasonable to say Finland should have fought Germany's war for it.
Nobody says that. Germany was fighting Finland's war for it and Fins refused to participate beyond their most immediate goals.
That was stupid, because, clearly, the outcome of the entire war was critical for them. This isn't a debate, it already happened, anon. We know it happened, because they ended up under the heel of the Soviets.

>>
>>65210867
NTA but they had support and would have lost if the Soviets kept going for 2 more weeks. Mannerheim's genius was not in "winning" the war as there was no way to do that. It was in making it seem like the Fins weren't about to fall apart to make Stalin think the endeavour was pointless.
And thinking Ukraine, with basically the entire western world behind them is comparable to Finland is delusional.

Finnish forces made it to River Svir (at the top right corner of this map) in 1941/42 with their dinky army raised from a population of barely 3,7 million, and to this day wehraboos blame them for not carrying the Germans on the Leningrad front, and also for not taking Murmansk for them while trying to maintain a porous front of 1000+ kms. Anyway, if Italy counts as a minor nation they are definitely on top far above anyone else, whether you agree they punched below or above relative to its size is irrelevant. Fascist Italy tied down a large number of the best Allied troops, kept fighting despite most of the population turning against it and was the major factor in why the Germans were able to conduct the African front at all. Despite the initial incompetence, Italy recovered relatively well and without them Germany would have collapsed much sooner.
Though in my opinion, Italy should qualify as a great power, even if it's the 2nd weakest (Japan was worse, fight me).
France shouldn't count as an ally at all, their army was a non-factor and while the SS Charlemagne fought well, they alongside the rest of the Vichy regime didn't contribute anything in the grand scheme of things besides letting the Germans plunder France.
My personal choice would be Romania. Made up the 2nd largest military contignent of Operation Barbarossa and fought loyally until the end.

The issue with your analysis, aside from you being a retard, is that you count in factors outside of the Eastern Front in Italy's favor.
But if you do so then you'd have to count their fuck-ups and all the cleaning up Germany had to do for them as well.
>>
>>65213322
I forgot it was solely about the Eastern Front due to being so focused on the shitflinging that occured in this thread. But anyway. The Eastern and Western front were not two different wars, there is a reason it is called WW2. If Italy didn't cover parts of the Balkan and Western Front, Germany would have had to spent more resources into these regions which would have directly affected the outcome of the Eastern Front.
Even then, Italy had the most modernised military of the Axis expeditionary forces.
And tell me, what fuck ups? What did Italy fail to do that the other minor Axis nations could have archieved in their position?

Does the discussion matter if you don't value truth? Because solely blaming a non-existent side for drama so the actual offenders don't sperg out more while calling it "both-siding" (whatever kind of reddit terminology that is) seems highly dishonest.
At that point just saying nothing or blaming nobody in particular makes a lot more sense than lying to make retards feel better. It just sounds like you have no dignity, anon. Basic self-respect should stop you from stuff like that.

Guess Italy shouldn't have involve themselves in that and let Germany lose even harder there.
>Defense of Sicily and mainland Italy after Italians pussied out
The Italian Fascists were still fighting until the end. By 1945 there were still 160.000 tousand Italian Soldiers who were continuing, despite 80% of Italy already being occupied by the Allies and the Italian Military being almost fully dismantled. And implying that any other minor Axis nation with even worse soldiers, training and equipment would have fared better is quite the statement. Finnland immediately switched when the Soviets, worse soldiers than the British and Americans, were at their doorsteps. Bulgaria and Romania switched sides too, altough they at least tried to fight until the end.
>Does the discussion matter if you don't value truth?
It was just a minor comment, unrelated to the actual content of my post. It was a lie, I admit that, but not a substantial one.
>Basic self-respect should stop you from stuff like that.
I understand your line of reasoning. But if a small lie can potentially avoid an unneccessary conflict, I'm more than willing to take it. Perhaps that is cowardly, but then you ought to take it to the Nordic culture which raised me to be this way.
Both-siding with a group that is non-existent at this point has no effect on my dignity or "morale", however seing anti-wehraboos sperg out with the same 5 phrases does.

How's that relevant in regard to unnecessary Italian follies?
Though, even if I'd give you that, there'd still be 4 other points, so can you really say Italy didn't fuck up in major ways that damaged the German war effort?

>It was just a minor comment, unrelated to the actual content of my post. It was a lie, I admit that, but not a substantial one.
Why do it then though? If a lie is so small that it doesn't matter, surely it's not worth lowering yourself to it in the first place.
>But if a small lie can potentially avoid an unneccessary conflict, I'm more than willing to take it. Perhaps that is cowardly, but then you ought to take it to the Nordic culture which raised me to be this way.
I get the logic, though it seemed particularly unnecessary in this example. You could have just said nothing, especially because this isn't reddit. There's no rampant "anti-wehraboo" culture you have to appease in every second post to avoid suspicion or antipathy. It's been like 15-20 years since we had a lot of history channel wehraboos around. Most /k/ommandos will likely agree that the new people coming in due to the war or whatever else who reflexively attack wehraboos both don't belong here and are a lot more annoying than this group that hasn't been an issue in longer than some of the younger posters here have been alive.
>>

>Anon, you don't have to justify yourself in front of strangers online
You are the one needlessly obsessing over it, I'm just trying to prove you wrong in good faith.
>A modicum of competence and coordination would have been nice.
Moving the goalpost. Yeah, Italy was incompetent, but they were still neccessary for the war and by their sheer weight they were the most effective (note: effective, not efficient, you are free to google the difference) among the Axis powers, even if they were less efficient per capita.
War is not a choosing game, you take what you get and Italy was the only Axis Nation able to support Germany to the extent which it did. Sure if they were better pepared it would have been better, but we can play this game with every nation of WW2. Germany would have lost if France prepared better, the Soviet Union wouldn't have los tens of millions of soldiers if they prepared better, Germany might have won on the Eastern Front if they prepared better,... .
160.000 soldiers fighting in 1945 when the war is lost is not rookie numbers. For comparison, that is a quarter of the men Finnland fielded throughout the entire war.
>>65213437
>Why do it then though? If a lie is so small that it doesn't matter, surely it's not worth lowering yourself to it in the first place.
Because i didn't want people to focus on an assumption they made about me. That's it. I hate explaining myself and prefer when people actually engange with what I said rather than what I supposedly am.
>especially because this isn't reddit. There's no rampant "anti-wehraboo" culture
I'm a tourist from /his/ basically who just lurks around here whenever /his/ doesn't feature a WW2 military history thread. Wehrbashers are dime a dozen over there, I assumed this place is similar because here appears to be a large Nafo-adjacent presence here.

Word limit: to explain the difference between effectiveness, let me take a tree as an analogy: imagine 2 kinds of tree, one that drops 10 seeds from which 5 become new trees and one that drops a 100 seeds to birth 20 trees. The former is more efficient because it archieves a better result than the other tree would if it were to produce the same amount of seeds. However, the latter tree is still more effective because its methode of reproduction archieves greater total number of results.
Italy is the latter tree, you might argue the other Axis nations made better use of their resources and would archieved better results if they were as powerful as Italy, but fact is Italy was the most important Axis power overall and the most important or 2nd most important on the Eastern Front.

That wasn't the particular point being made here, though I'd have a hard time deciding if I'd have to boot either Romania or Italy.

I think preparation was less of an issue than retarded choices made in the moment.

Pummeling a drooling retard that didn't know east from west isn't the achievement you think it is. Do you feel badass when you beat your child or nephew at something?

That actually explains a lot of the redditism since /his/ is overrun by redditors.

War tourists usually just come around when another nothingburger drops in the bi-decadal interslavic genocide, but they're not really part of the board and inherently both a minority and a temporary phenomenon so you don't have to worry about those.

What a retarded thread.
If you're counting France and Spain, might as well also count every other foreign SS division/unit.
>>
>>65213833
this, OP forgot to mention the arab SS legions
>>
>>65213833
France/Spain are largely the only foreign groups large enough to matter. For example the British/American SS were practically mascots or an experiment on how to indoctrinate Anglo speakers on the off chance they take an Anglo nation for the Nazis.
>>
>>65213863
lol no, the hungarians had three divisions within the ss and 10 divisions in the hungarian second army.

spain had one division until 1943, and then only a brigade stayed

the french also had one division in the ss
>>
>>65213832
Nigger, you haven't made any point. You were dumb enough to say this
>Oh, they should've become Finnish SSR then
Because you're too autistic to understand that valuing democracy and not wanting to be a communist ruled by Russians are completely different things.
You're such an autist you literally can't imagine a world that is different from the propaganda you consume daily.

No shit, nigger. I wasn't making an argument, I was asking a question and the Walloons are also mentioned in the OP so I'm still waiting for an answer.

I know they were occupied and not allies but Czechoslovakia provided more assistance than several of the minor minor ones combined.
>>
>>65214219
Czechs somehow went from being insanely tyrannical and oppressive to their minorities, making Slovaks second class citizens and Germans, Romanians, Poles, Hungarians etc. third class citizens while brutally oppressing and economically strangling Germans to becoming the model protectorate of the Reich, just to go right back into ethnic cleansing mode after the war.
I wish I could make a clever quip here, but their change from genocidal persecution to almost eager cooperation and back has confused me for about 20 years now and whenever I talk to Czechs about it they still fall into one of those extremes to this day.
>>
>>65214251
Leadng scholars (me, but in plural) have come up with a solution to the conundrum:
After about a millenium in the HRE, 600 years under German nobility, German settlements in the east and earlier Germanic traces from pre-slavic times the Czechs have absorbed enough German autism to be able to subconsciously switch from the otherwise permanent slavic lust for needless and ultimately self-destructive genocide to the German(ic) need for order and progress.
It's just a matter of leadership.
>>
>>65213863
The Dutch provided the most foreign SS troops. This is easily found basic information.

To get this thread back on track.

The Germans really did not treat there allies very well. Even beyond the whole not having anything to share. When the Romanians got hit with Operation Uranus they had sub 20 reporposed French anti tank guns. No amount of bravery can make up for this and frankly the Romanians fought longer than they had any right too.
The Italians asked for the license to manufacture various German tanks instead of getting any help the Italians got a fuck off quote... Quite the contrast to the Tizard Mission.

When fighting in North Africa Italian soldiers got a few hundred less calories then German troops. Would that inspire bravery?
>>
>>65213596
Both Hitler and Mussolini where told if the war started in 1939 they would lose.

Its why Goering checked out
>>

>To get this thread back on track.

Aside from the fact that Italians couldn't have produced those tanks anyway, I think that might be the wrong track.
>>65216731
Pretty retarded statement, not just since it doesn't really matter to the points made in that post, it's also complete nonsense. It's not the starting date that lost that war.

Fighting burns more calories than waving white flags does

Italians didnt fight in Africa?

>>
>>65216708
Ahahahaha no.
The story of the German tanks is fake as fuck. I'll explain: FIAT-ANSALDO, the conglomerate that dominated the vast majority of Italian tank production (and the story of FIAT fucking with the Italian people is a thing of wonder, it's a century of cheating the public) and of course they didn't want any kind of alternatives.
So while the Italian authorities tried to find something else to supplement the frankly subpar FIAT production (and FIAT lied through their teeth on performance, developments and future projects constantly) a good deal of energy and political capital was spent by FIAT management to sink every possible alternative. Captured French tanks after 1940? Oh noo look at those tests we haven't doctored the performance is so bad. Czech tanks? Noo terrible. German licensed production of Panzer IV and V? Impossible, trust us my dear Duce the P40 is better than those. Trust us.

Even their airplane production was insane. Ah yes Reggiane wins a contract because their plane is better? We need to build 'em now? I'm so sad, you know, a random air raid hits specifically the train car with all the plans and machinery to set up Reggiane production, are you sure you don't want us to keep building G55s?
Insanity.
