Germany wanted to shoot for the moon with a literal wunderwaffe, France wanted a Rafale+. The first was impossible, the second not survivable.
France's next jet will just suck, Germany will buy American or just not have a competitive fighter at all (like for basically its entire post-war history, desu).

Kinda interesting seeing this pop up when just this morning I got around to the Europe section of last week's economist and read article related:
>"Why France is uneasy about German rearmament"
Basically, France has long taken it for granted that they're the only serious remaining EU continental military, even though Germany had a much stronger economy. So for all they preened about european independence from America etc, they actually got quite comfortable with the status quo of Germany military being a total fucking joke and the resulting geopolitical relationships.
But there is no doubt about who has the financial firepower, so if Germany truly does get serious and can spend 3x what France can afford to, they certainly have the room to take the lead and do better. Which would hit the French arms industry if they can't adapt. All of which would be very healthy for Europe overall, but in the case of france might also be a bit of a case of the dog that caught the car. They've been pushing the whole sovereignty and strategic capability thing for ages now, but don't seem to have quite internalized that that happening would mean Germany regaining a significantly more central place in Europe's military hierarchy.

Very based.
According to the project, Dassault was to be the project manager on the FCAS, while a german company was to be the project manager on their tank project.
Of course the krautists couldn't stand it.

The keyword there being "serious" because Krauts could spend half of their GDP and still accomplish fuckall. Their sue-happy culture, sea of red tape and the short span in which their budgets are applied and must be accounted for are lethal to long-term procurement, economies of scale, force regeneration and rearmament in general.
