My mom saw this news story and pinged me about it since she knows I'm super into Japan. I was actually already following the story since I frequent some Japan related discords.
She thought he was a girl. Some of the commenters on our local news site also thought he was a girl. Hopefule?
Regardless, I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought this might be a factor. His parents seemed kind of of the high control variety with some sort of location tracker for him. It would not surprise me if being transgender was part of all this.
Interestingly, one of the Reddit accounts that posted information about the search party was an FTM account. I'm not sure if that post is still up.
They were using the same template as the previous family posts, so I think they either knew Weston directly or knew the family. It seems more likely that it's the former since the family seems fairly religious.
This post followed a bunch of similar posts made by the family and family friends since their accounts kept getting banned. The story was kind of wishy-washy and people thought it was all some sort of troll or hyper controlling family situation.

Was he killed for being trans? wtf Japan why do they do the exact same shit we see in UK and St. Louis or wherever that tranny was killed by a black man recently for being trans
I thought japan was kind of cool with this stuff but apparently not, i'll think twice about wanting to travel now

20-year-old James “Weston” Higginbotham and his family arrived in Japan from the U.S. on May 25, spending time in Tokyo and elsewhere before reaching Kyoto. Having argued with his mother during their trip, Weston declined to go with his parents and 18-year-old younger brother while they visited a temple on May 29, instead opting to sightsee on his own, while sharing his location through the Life360 phone app.
Based on his location data, Weston left the family’s hotel by himself at around 6 p.m. and later boarded a train at Kyoto Station, a five-minute ride away. He can be seen on multiple security cameras leaving Yamashina Station and walking in the neighborhood around 8 p.m., wearing a gray T-shirt with “Save the bees” written across it and brown pants, and carrying a shoulder bag. His last known location was on a path that leads to a hiking trail that goes into the mountainous forest region to the east of Kyoto City.
At 8:29, Weston turned off location-sharing on his phone, something his mother said he has never done before in such situations. Examination of his location data prior to disconnecting also shows that Weston visited a home supplies store at some point after leaving the hotel. By 2 a.m., Weston had not returned to the hotel or contacted his family, so they reported him as missing to the police.
According to his family, Weston is an experienced outdoorsman and international traveler, having solo hiked in Europe, and the family often hikes, mountain bikes, and river rafts together. “It’s not unusual for Weston to blow off steam going to the woods and just exploring,” his mother, Nancy, said. “That’s his happy place.” As such, she remains optimistic that her son has simply gotten lost and can be safely rescued, but a powerful storm that passed through the area earlier this week means conditions were likely more dangerous than usual.

sounds like the mom bullied the son for being a faggot and he got sick of it and she's afraid of being found out for what she did
I mean, have you ever heard a story where a kid killed himself or his family and they actually admitted the parents bullied him?

my point is broader, whenever you have gay/trans kids who do a murder or suicide, there's never any honesty about maybe the child was abused by the family
I just assume it was the case now whenever I read about a suicide or homicide within a family. I know how abusive people get, and how much they will deny it and not deal with it.

>they were arguing in defense of “ai” after all
what does that even mean?
why do people talk about ai like it's a person instead of a computer program meant to produce natural language-sounding responses?
>>
>>
>>43842248
hence the quotation marks, most people have no fucking clue what they’re talking about when they say ai. llms are not ai, they’re useless chatbots built for entertaining the masses. ai is a tool that scientists have been using for decades to make information more readable, like for weather prediction, or google search.
that’s how you know the parents were retarded, anyone who tries to make a sweeping argument in favor of “ai” is medically challenged

i don't think it's over chatgpt, he had like crazy controlling parents who monitored his social media usage and stuff, the mother probably just doesn't want to admit that him dying could have been her fault. also the dude had a fucking helicopter parent at 20 yrs old wtf.
>>43837402
it's crazy how much stuff i saw pop up about this dude on reddit in various japan subs tho, i'm in tokyo atm and my reddit feed was absolutely spammed with news about him
>hyper controlling family situation
it is and the mother is trying to downplay it
>>43841307
>he might have killed himself for being trans
why do you think he was trans? i don't think there's a slightest indication that he was trans, literally just a dude with long hair. he doesn't look remotely feminine unless you think that long hair = woman

Read further up in the thread.
Someone posted on Reddit with information about the search efforts using the families template.
That person had a very NSFW FTM account. Seems unlikely to be a direct friend of the family and more likely to be a friend of Weston.
Obviously that's still a stretch, but it does raise some questions in my mind, even if I wouldn't bet money on it.

my mom called me about this story because I got back from japan recently and she's convinced Japan is dangerous to travel to (we live in America)
>>
>>43845944
your mother is retarded, the guy literally killed himself, what is japan supposed to do about that? japan and especially tokyo are goated, i'm a tranny in tokyo, even the supposedly "dangerous" places like kabukicho are so fun to be around if you don't mind getting giga mogged by all the good looking asian women and even by their twinks. too bad the gov hates gaijin though

the frequency of literal model-tier people you see just walking around Tokyo is unbelievable, I had a hard time explaining it when I got back
there are a ton of very stylish young people and even the office workers were very put together. I even saw a gyaru in shibuya.

>the frequency of literal model-tier people you see just walking around Tokyo is unbelievable
ah yeah every time i go to shinjuku, i just get mogged into oblivion, though usually around ota and stuff, i don't usually see as many of them, i think they're mostly drawn to like central-ish tokyo areas. i seem to pass well enough to japanese people but they must see me and all the bigger european women as some ugly beasts or something along those lines. but yeah, the diversity of styles around shinjuku (and maybe shibuya, though i don't go to shibuya at night very often) is incredible, too bad i don't have the body to wear anything like that, like even the xl women's size here is kinda too small for me, like i can wear it but it's less comfortable than if it were a size up.
>when I got back
ah, how long were you in tokyo for?

>diversity of styles around shinjuku (and maybe shibuya, though i don't go to shibuya at night very often)
People go all out even when they're just going for a walk. One girl I saw looked straight out of a depeche mode album cover - leather jacket, a really short cropped haircut, and leather boots - and she was walking with a casually dressed girl who looked younger and they went into a McDonald's together. I feel like a country bumpkin in comparison lol.
I can sort of fit into the LL size but my shoe size is waaay too big for anything there.
>how long were you in tokyo for?
I was in tokyo only for about a week in total. I want to go back soon (probably in the fall) but I have to find which neighborhood to stay in, Asakusa felt like it catered to tourists too much.
