Why is it so hard to get good book discussions on dedicated book sites? I’ve tried Goodreads, subreddits, book forums, wikis, booktube, Facebook groups, discord servers, you name it. But the level of discussion seems to be low. People can’t read between the lines and often need you to spoon feed your analysis to them. You can’t just assume your interlocutor can follow a general argument, they want you to prove beyond reasonable doubt your interpretation makes sense to them, because you have to basically appease the other person and make them feel like they haven’t missed the point of whatever book you’re discussing. It’s particularly bad with readers who don’t read poetry.

Why do you need to discuss a book?
Sounds to me like you're the fucking idiot in these situations. I've never read a book and desperately needed to talk about it with other people. What drives a man to lack any mental independence? If you're going to be a fag, just pay a therapist. They'll listen to your self-important yammering so long as the payment clears.

Humans are a social species, we have an instinctual need to connect with other people. To share our opinions, see other people's points of view, and refine our assessment of a work of art. If we weren't, if we were all autistic spergs, we'd still be sitting in our caves, or we'd have gone completely extinct.

What really sticks out to me here is that this shelf has just the first few books of many series. Like it only has the first Redwall (20+ book series), the first Discworld (40+ book series), the first ASoIaF, a few Wheel of Times and Farseers... I know the bottom shelf is double-stacked, but there's nowhere near enough room for the "missing" books in this photo. I assume the rest are somewhere less photogenic.
But otherwise, whatever. This guy actually reads, and he reads what he wants to read.

I have a brother-in-law who is also into modernist/pomo shit and it's always a joy to talk to him. We recommend each other books, talk about our experiences with them, think about new perspectives. It's great.

it is a good goal as an adult to minimize this slopass mindset actually. you only believe this if you are unable to entertain yourself or if you go to therapy. i really really really recommend you get rid of this toxic fucking idea and improve yourself through discipline

the best way to actually find some good discussions is to attend seminars at uni and try to debate with the professors and fellow students, unironically. most people outside of work/school environment are simply too fatigued and shallow to get into heated arguments relating to books. They just go with whatever feeling they can remember out of the last books they read: be it "yeah this author is misogynistic" or "I cannot resonate with the character A".

Probably because faggots like you constantly post meta-discussion instead of actual discussion. Just make (or better yet, join) a thread about the book you're reading, retard. You won't because you're an attention whore clogging up the catalogue with your vain faggotry.

I agree. I just come here to shoot the shit and occasionally you guys recommend a winner, but really I do almost all of my processing of what I read in quiet reflection. I have very rarely found someone else’s opinion on a book to be truly insightful. If I enjoy a book, I already feel a privileged relationship with it. I don’t need anyone else to tell me what it means.

Reddit is worse. Here is fine but maybe I just gotta go to a dedicated subgenre forum like Thomas Ligotti Online.

Why would my friends be reading as much as me? They’re all in college and don’t read anything other than their course readings. I’ve read well over 400 books and it’s hard to find any resources that are worthwhile. If you look at free lectures online, like from Greg Sadler or MIT or Cambridge or Yale, they’re all half-arsed and you can tell the professors aren’t paid enough. It’s just obvious after a point that most publishing is a grift and educators don’t know what they’re talking about. This trickles down to retards like you who think they have insight into books but can’t even articulate what it is.
