The real dank lore is that Suzumura’s first VA role was in 7 as one of Gamlin’s mooks, and Kawamori cast him as the lead in the next Macross show.

was including Focker even necessary? he does not add anything to the plot. You only get a vague implication that one of the guys in the evil planes was his flight instructor but that's it.
