GQX had some of the best animation/scene composition, character designs, music, premise/set up, and vibes/atmosphere in Gundam, at least in the first half, but the plot and pacing were ass. It was all style with no substance.

Multiverse stuff aside GQuuuuuuX was really interesting. Seeing the alternate history and the implications that has on the UC timeline. There's a lot to dig into there. Also post-war underground MS fighting ring and space junk pirates is a cool premise that should've been the whole focus of the show.

That's what baffles me not just about this show, but other shows like it. I really don't get how something can have such competent artistic direction and virtually none of that talent pours over into the writing. Because it's not like the artists just came up with the imagery out of nowhere, it had to be guided or at least designed in collaboration with the writers. Shuji was a plank of wood. Amate is the whole "rich or upper middle class girl who wants to hang out with hooligans because of popular media and teenage angst". It's an interesting idea, and could've even led to some profound storytelling, but the issue is that they don't use what little time they have to focus on that tension and instead devote too much of it to the Char prequel stuff and side characters who go nowhere.

The series really looses itself somewhere in the span of episodes between Deux and the Lalah reveal.

The first 4 episodes I thought were very solid though. The Unicum pilot that Shuji killed was a neat foil to Machu in how she was selfishly chasing an empty desire that only made things worse. Machu's story should've led into that direction by having her parallel that and grow up from the childish ambitions she had. There's traces of such a conclusion in the finale, but it seems to be something they're not concerned about.

The joke theory that Machu was an AU Haman was way more amusing than anything that happened in the actual show.

One thing I will always give 0083 shit for is giving the Feds a casus belli to form the Titans and being completely justified in doing so. The reason Zeta works is BECAUSE the Titans are an overexaggerated response to Spacenoids. Giving them a legitimate reason to be afraid and start cracking down on any independence movements goes against the entire messaging.
Speaking of, I remember an old theory about how supposedly after the AEUG beats the Titans, they'd become Zeon again, with everyone being aware who Char is in the first episode and all that. This falls flat once Bright and Amuro tag along, but it would be funny to see Kamille get betrayed a second time.

Apolly seems surprised when Quatro's identity is revealed during the Axis negotiation scene later on. Apolly and Roberto were later retconned into originally being from Zeon, but I really don't think the show hints at that at all.

The AEUG dress with modified Federation uniforms and their leader is a Federation congressman too.

Either way, the OYW by itself and all deaths caused by Zeons gives more than enough reason to create somthing like the Titans. The issue is more about the Titans end up being led by power tripping assholes (although this is a pretty natural consequence of giving them so much power, it'd attract exactly those type of people).

Independently I could deal with there being a twist regarding who Shuji was, and I was okay with the Lalah dream world thing.
But combined, it just kind of felt like the entire show was the side effect of a character we barely knew (since Shuji's whole persona up till that point seemed to be him playing dumb) having a one sided love affair with a sleeping person. It just felt like everything was an unrelated detour on the way to getting Lalah and Char back together. And as a result I'm not particularly exited to see more of this world.

The entire series is hard carried by Char and Char fans. People who aren't Gundam fans, but more fans of Char Aznable. 80% of the fans of GQuuuuuuX are Char and Challia shippers. I don't think I would have watched this show myself if it wasn't for Casval to be quite honest, and I think if Char wasnt in it then Anno wouldn't have gotten involved either.

I love this dumb fucker, but the Char wank was TOO much between him having a magical girl transformation, Challia being Anno's gay self insert, and the entire timeline being a way for Lalah to reunite with him was just overkill, but the main original cast ended up being so boring and underwhelming that this Char-wank overkill somehow ended up being the most memorable parts of the show.

The final episode completely tanked my interest in the show. Like, I kind of enjoyed the hype train enough to forgive plot points that went nowhere because I hoped they would eventually be addressed. Honestly, I hope that we'll see more "alt timeline UC" series pop out of the woodwork. I'm absolutely huffing copium on this one, but it'd be amazing if we got a Beltorchika's Children OVA series with the kind of production values that Unicorn had.

Really, rather than having yet another side story set during the OYW that adds yet another OC DONUT STEEL Gundam into the timeline that ends up looking riidiculously OP next to the original Gundam, I like the idea of more Gundam series that delve into the possibilities of "what would change if (x) happened instead of (y) during (z)?"

Like... imagine a timeline where Lalah fails to warn Char about the identity of the G-Fighter/Core Booster's pilot and ends up killing his own sister. Not only would you have Char losing his only family at his own hands and wrestling with that guilt, you'd have a murderous Amuro out for blood as a result. Dozle's Newtype bullshit during his last stand that spooked Amuro would be small potatoes compared to the kind of psychic fuckery this theoretical version of Amuro would be unleashing--not even Lalah could put that genie back in the bottle. Hell, she'd probably be feeling just as guilty, if not moreso about the whole situation.

Even tho I liked parts of it, the show itself is objectively a bit shit. I don't think there's any reason to assume that'll stop them from making sequels/spin-offs in the future. Characters are good enough that it wouldn't feel totally undeserved, so long as they're going about it tastefully and with less ham fisted nostalgia baiting.

The effort and resources would probably be better spent on new ideas, but only time will tell what is ultimately done.

What do you want to see in the sequel guy. I honestly would love to have Shuji as the MC. After his confrontation with Machu he is more human now and in his universe he has to deal with a war. Machu and Nyaan come to the aid and the much awaited reunion happens

Shuji sucks. He's a non-character for most of the show carried only by the mystery surrounding him, which ends up being fucking nothing. He drags down both Machu and Nyaan by their obsession with him and drags down the entire narrative by eating up the finale. His romance with Machu is embarrassingly bad, probably the worst Gundam romance yet, which is saying a lot.
I'd rather Gqux not get a sequel at all then for it to get one focused on Shuji.

Mystery itself was one of the least interesting aspects about him. He was fun to watch whenever he was on screen in the first half of the show at least, but that comes down to his personality.

If I'm remembering the timeline right, Scirocco is already on his way back to the Earth Sphere from Jupiter by the time of Gqux. And that's happening independently of the OYW, so the timeline stuff shouldn't have any affect on that at all.
Machu and Nyaan would be putty in his hands. They're both exactly the sort of girls he'd be able to manipulate. And as such, he'd make a pretty great villain. Maybe this time Machu's the one that gets seduced by 'evil?'

I play gund games occasionally, and something very weird regarding this show is that the characters from it do not have any interactions with characters from other shows unlike others, which makes me think the right of the show and characters might be more complicated than regular entries (even if the characters still can be used).
