Go back in time with me for a minute:
Is there anyone out there that thinks old Velvet DP (the safe on block version) was actually fair? I think there's an interesting argument to be made that it is, if you consider it as a reversal where the counterplay options are just switched around (blocking beats traditional DPs but loses to Velvet DP, but jumping which usually loses to traditional DPs beats Velvet DP). But clearly people hated it a lot and it was later made kind of punishable sometimes.
I imagine the main counterargument is that intermittently jump during your own pressure to bait it is a much bigger disadvantage than stopping to block sometimes during your pressure, and how much you lose by having to jump a lot varies a lot by character.

i'd agree if it actually always lost to jumps but sometimes you just get hit by it anyway for timing the jump slightly wrong, especially if velvet delays it. they could've programmed it to never hit airborne opponents but didn't for who knows why

It's problem was more the number of situations it made her effectively unchallengable without a read in. You couldn't safejump it, so her wakeup was just guess whether she's going to and hard bait it or give up your turn, doing normal frame traps was basically pointless because they were never going to mash anything but DP anyway since if you blocked it was their turn, it was also a good combo starter in the corner or with the right spacing so she could use it in her own frametraps that just crushed anything regardless of the timing because it had iframes.
Normal reversals generally beat other active options in exchange for losing to safe options, if you attack into a dp they win but if you do nothing they lose, Velvet's won not only if you attacked into it but also if you did nothing, you had to take a specific action to beat it which is a much larger commitment than just waiting a little to see what they do.
Now, that's not actually that uncommon in anime games, when you've got resources behind it. DP RC has been a GG staple since they added the mechanic, but the cost has the be significant enough to limit its use so they can't just force you to hard bait it in every interaction and Velvet's wasn't, one magic stock on a character that regenerates them passively meant she just always had it if she wanted.

Been awhile since I've been in the thread, is this about GGI and the Avatar game? Who is left on the team, just Omari or what?
