They don't mention anything else, either, and they can get adoration or even power through their mundane musical careers. There's really not another reason that makes much sense for them to be seeking the magic from another dimension.

This is a side detail in a production targeted at kids, you're not going to see much in the way of more abstract and indirect motivations. Equestrian magic is from Equestria, ergo using it to get to Equestria makes sense.

I genuinely don't like how the Dazzlings lose their voices. I wish that they were naturally talented, but their amulets are what gave them their magical siren serenade. Hadley confirming even Find The Magic means they don't actually have their amulets back, it's just metaphorical of them learning to accept their existence in the human world, and the "magic of digital editing" being required for them to sound good vocally just hurts.

I always likened it to mutilation.
Their whole story kinda just is tragic really; They were punished mainly for eating differently. Get ripped out of their home dimension/environment by Starswirl instead of someone trying to find a way to coexist with them or find a way for them to live without consuming negativity(which granted probably wouldn't have worked and they might have just laughed an attempt at coexisting off and gotten banished anyway but it's the principle that matters; Pretty much every villain in the show was given a chance to stop except them.)
Then after that, they are in an alien world without any care or concern put towards their ability to survive or even eat in this world they are being dumped into, and after apparently going hungry for a while, they get a taste of something from home and go a bit far(and even then they still never did anything that had lasting damage unlike Sunset lol, and they also never tried murdering Twilight when reaching full power like her either... but nah Sunset gets the redemption and second chance.)

It makes me think of vegan adult humans who force their pets or children to be vegan and are shocked when the ones in their care "suddenly" become ill and possibly die from malnourishment. I understand that sirens are inherently parasitic, but so too were the changelings, and their entire SPECIES was granted salvation. Even Chrysalis, unrepentant to the last, was still given a chance to change.

The Dazzlings were defeated in an incredibly personal way, publicly humiliated, never given an extended hand, and were forced to accept, on their own, that they will never go home, never get an intimate part of themselves back, and never truly feel satisfied except by finding mild comfort in the little moments when they can forget just how bleak their lives and futures are.

I get it. They're inherently evil. Their species, by necessity, is evil. Once again, so were the changelings, and their elite ended up getting accepted into Twilight's School of ̶P̶o̶n̶y̶ ̶C̶u̶l̶t̶u̶r̶a̶l̶ ̶D̶o̶m̶i̶n̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ Friendship. What's the message with the sirens? That they're beyond salvation?

I mean not necessarily though.
Again even though they had all the power to do so, they never really go to extremes or caused lasting damage with it to further their ends; Really the only lasting effect from their spell or feeding seemed to just be... I don't even know actually, it's not really shown. The entire crowd at the end of Rainbow Rocks recovered pretty quick after the spell ended, and I'm pretty willing to bet that the crowd they had in the beginning of the movie in the coffee shop or whatever they were in also didn't have much ill-effects.
All they seem to do is really just cause more of an inconvenience than anything else when they are feeding normally; It isn't until they decide to take over the world after being fucked over by both and going hungry that you can start to go "ehhh ok maybe that's a bit much", but even then - while having that as a goal they don't go as far as Sunset did with her actions;
They never upload anything onto the internet for example, or blackmail anyone with actual non-magical material(so real shit that would have lasting implications), unlike Sunset's ass.
and I never tire of bringing it up - again, Sunset became full power at the end of the first movie and immediately tried killing Twilight Sparkle by smashing her - this is the Princess of fucking Friendship - and the entire motivation Sunset had was... Celestia didn't jerk her ego off enough.
The Dazzlings to me seem to be the perfect example of antagonists vs villains;
per some shit article off google:

Equestria Girls themes were always kind of a mess, but it's particularly jarring how little acknowledgement there is that banishing the sirens to limbo (the only way the sirens make sense in the modern day human world is if they were in limbo until Sunset came through) forever was not a very ethical solution (i.e. the whole message of Shadow Play), *and* the sirens are out of limbo and not even hostile, so that wrong can now be made right. But nothing like that happens and they're left to languish in a world Hasbro lost interest in entirely.

I'd say probably because:
1. They aren't ponies and G4 didn't initially care much about non-ponies for a long time; it was set in a biologically stratified pony ethnostate (which the audience just weren't supposed to think about) for the first several seasons.
2. The pony part of MLP production seemed to view anything Equestria Girls largely with disdain. It was basically just a universe around Sunset Shimmer by the end.

Everyone also seems to forget the stones aren't amulets in their siren forms, they're literally part of their bodies. Destroying them is arguably magical organ maiming akin to sawing off a unicorn's horn. Not even Starswirl stooped to doing that to them in either version of their banishment.

I wouldn't say "how little" was put into EQG because Rudell, Hadley, and later Brand were all putting much more effort into it than Hasbro ever intended. EQG was supposed to compete with Monster High, and that's where the board room meetings ended. Everything else was the staff saying, "Okay, Hasbro hates its audience, but we don't have to."

The limiting factors of time and money mean things do end up horribly abandoned. Even though I'm dismayed by what happened with the sirens, I can't fault the team for Rainbow Rocks. Everything was pushing towards Sunset's redemption. The climax, from a pure "I like Sunset Shimmer" standpoint, is everything a Sunshim fan would want. The problem is that she's never given time to genuinely progress and face the consequences of her actions, because EQG, ironically, had FIM and Hasbro as albatrosses around its neck.

Which means Sunset can't show the punk-rock side of herself. The closest we ever get is her and Pinkie almost breaking, entering, and trespassing both in Backstage Pass and when trying to get the key to Sunset's temporary storage garage for Hearth's Warming.

Which means that your valid concern, showing where empathy can cross boundaries, is never expressed. Sunset can never learn that it's possible to go "too far" in a perceived positive direction, which is critical for someone as ambitious as she is.

Which means Forgotten Friendship, which should've been more brutal, has this odd aftertaste and bizarre message. Rumor has it Sunset was going to be at her absolute lowest there. I mean getting hit by Flash's car on accident, having an emotional breakdown because she's physically incapable due to injury of stopping Wallflower, and then a mental breakdown when she regresses back to a preteen mare after getting her memories stolen. The kind of cringekino you'd find in teen literature or, I don't know, Dawson's Creek. Or "edgy" ponyfics, I suppose. Anyways,
>"We can't have pony Sunset meet human Sunset because G4 is kill."
Which means the consequences of Sunset being where she shouldn't and meddling in affairs that aren't hers can't ever be shown.

Bringing this back to the Dazzlings, they have less than 20 minutes of screen time across the movie, special, and AMV. That's not enough time to really delve into how messed up their whole situation is. FIM writers gave zero shits about EQG. Having the Pillars banish the sirens 1,000 YEARS AGO isn't insane, it's fucking psychotic.

I don't blame the EQG staff for the Dazzlings' mistreatment. I blame Hasbro. EQG had so many stories it wanted to tell using the good parts of FIM as a foundation, and it couldn't. However, that means that we all have a responsibility to remind as many people as we can of "what could have been."

I think the main problem was EQG didn't really move off shelves, and the concept was a bit fraught from the start. It was a bid to compete with Monster High that flopped, but using an IP not very compatible with something like what Monster High is thematically OR visually. It's arguably a failure to understand the actual demographic buying Monster High.

However, this is Hasbro - their MO is to be behind the curve by several years at minimum, have completely delusional aspirations and expectations, then inevitably violently shit themselves and die during release. I bet part of the initial pitch was positioning EQG somewhere between Monster High and Barbie to try and pull market share from both, which was never going to happen.

They probably only used MLP rather than a new IP because they wanted a boost from the unexpected popularity of G4 for their new non-pony doll toy line, and they didn't want to wait for a new IP to be developed, as they probably had a sense of urgency in trying to enter the niche before Monster High squeezed them out entirely.

In the end it was only really kept afloat by FiM popularity, so despite the fact the FiM side seemed to hate EQG and anything related to it (I'm guessing because they felt it was a waste of animation budget), when FiM finally hobbled into the open grave it had been digging for itself during the final years, EQG was guaranteed to end at the same time regardless of how complete EQG's story was or what the plans were. It's really a wonder that EQG animation kept going as long as it did

I fully expect the upcoming live action movie to be absolutely fucking disastrously bad, by the way. If they haven't already cancelled it behind closed doors yet.

Everything's slow today. The captchas weren't even working at one point.

Anyway, I always imagined that Aria and Adagio would butt heads often, but not that intensely, and they would always resolve things before the conflict became a problem. I also imagined that both would fairly protective of Sonata, who would have more of the "little sister" role.

It does say something that truly turning them against each other doesn't appear possible. Even at their worst they don't really pull each other down. Their goals always ultimately include each other.

It's not much material to work with, obviously, but what we have suggests they were already loyal to each other before their banishment.

The writers probably didn't think that part through, honestly. They weren't supposed to become as popular as they got, and so redeeming or coexisting with them was pushed aside because redeeming Sunset was the focus. EQG basically had a "main character" instead of an ensemble.

Thinking about it, I think a big part of the popularity of the sirens was because each of them was an interesting character archetype that the mane 6 and Sunset didn't cover. A ditz, a punk, and a domme play off each other surprisingly well.

Of course the tragedy of that is the three could've probably played off the rest of the cast way better than Sunset actually did. Adagio and Rarity being professional rivals, Aria and Rainbow butting heads and/or finding common interests in a "punk tomboy vs athlete tomboy" sense, Sonata and Pinkie getting up to completely unplanned antics together. None of that potential is tapped because EQG is a parasitic copycat franchise of FiM centered on an OC inserted into a clique of doppelgangers of the FiM ensemble and given most of the focus.

Meanwhile said focus character is just a third Twilight Sparkle, except meaner (reformed), already a girlfailure in high school, and orange.

...Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but EQG isn't very good. The sirens are far and away the best part of the entire sub-IP. They would've been fun on the pony side, on the EQG side they were as doomed to rotting away in the background as the rest of EQG was.

EQG isn't very good because it's limited by the company that owns it. Even the sirens aren't very good, but you're waifubraining hard (which isn't a bad thing, having passion that doesn't result in the harm of others is perfectly fine). Adagio isn't a "domme" because she doesn't ever assert dominance in a way that the other two don't. Each of the sirens has mind control as a power. Just because she's the lead doesn't also mean she's the "most dominant", it just means she's the lead in the trio's small hierarchy. Aria also isn't a "tomboy" because she never does anything that exudes tomboyishness, and her hostility isn't "tsundere" behavior since the other two are also hostile. Sonata is probably the worst of the three because it took one line to reduce her to "taco girl".

The point I'm trying to make is that I can be just as reductive of the sirens because, while I like them, I'm not waifubrained about them, and can recognize that every attribute /mlp/ and beyond sees in them are tropes attached after the fact in a desperate attempt to make them more than they are. I'm all for that, though. I'm not complaining at all. This brings me to my final point.

Again, EQG isn't very good because it's limited by the company that owns it. That didn't stop most of the staff from trying to make it more than it is. They shared personal apocrypha over social media to expand the setting, whether it's Hadley suggesting Sunset is bisexual (which makes sense, since she's overly-emotional and empathic while also incredibly magnetic) or Brand suggesting most of Sunset's stuff is trash that's refurbished thanks to Sci-Twi or repurposed thanks to AJ because Sunset is impoverished (which makes sense since she's independent and emancipated). By extension, this general has theorized and expanded on the personalities of the sirens by taking 15 minutes of screentime and fleshing them out into fully-formed individuals with real, tangible personalities and identities. No, EQG, the actual show, isn't very good, but that doesn't stop us from making better than it is.

It's not unlike how a bunch of dudes in their 20s and 30s took a pastel horse cartoon made for little girls and turned it into a cultural phenomenon that altered the weltanschauung of the internet forever.

They don't have enough development as characters to decisively say much about their lives, but they have good foundations to build on as characters. There is potential. The whole point of my post was that nothing was ever going to be built, because of the nature of what EQG was.

I'm being reductive of Sunset because from a meta standpoint she is an extremely derivative character, ironically sharing a universe with a copy of the character role she was most directly derived from.

I don't know what you thought was 'waifubrained' about acknowledging the production planning constraints that prevented solid character exploration of the sirens despite their popularity.
