I'll tell you this as someone who was in the strange waifu discord, it was one of the first chats I joined, and even made a discord account to use. It was great for a while, had a ton of stuff made and posted for a while that was on topic, and it'd get posted to the thread and was cool. It even had sections for every types of waifus, but then that slowed down when people who weren't in it for the strange ponies joined and started to discuss politics. /swt/ for some godforsaken reason had a political chat in it. And it had open invites. That lead to infighting and a bunch of bullshit, and drove people away from it. That's what eventually killed it.

that is more of a side effect of Discord in general (don't think about how much tech support/obscure game/topic knowledge lies inaccessible in random Discords instead of some forum that can be found by Google), the main reason is generally because it fosters secrit clubs/people becoming recognisable in the first place.
