Since we was talking about the cosmology of Equestria, I thought I'd share my own interpretation on it.

Equestria is shielded by a firmament that divides the material world from the immaterial world of magic and magic itself comes in the forms of both light and dark. These two wells of magic exist in the void outside of where Equestria exist and are responsible for every kind of magical phenomena in Equestria. Since they are the power sources of everything, Celestia and Luna are able to directly connect with them when they raise and lower the sun and moon, which they use to restore their youthfulness and maintain the celestial cycle.

The sun and moon as they appear when looking at them from Equestria's surface are actually just focal points in the firmament which allows light to pass through and create daytime. When Celestia raises the sun she is maintaining the gateway rather than moving the source of light itself.

Luna is different because she is tied to darkness and the nature of darkness in Equestria's universe is to draw in the light and maintain an equal balance between the two opposing forces. Since the firmament around Equestria divides absolute light from absolute darkness the magnetic forces of darkness pull light around the firmament towards itself which creates a shadow. When Luna creates the second gateway, the light that is being gradually being absorbed by the darkness manifests as the moon and the reason why the moon has phases is because Luna punches additional holes in the firmament creating the stars at the expense of dimming the moon.

The reason she does this is because the amount of light and dark energy is finite and she must allow for light to convert to darkness since both she and Celestia depend on the balance and on that note, darkness does travel like light does around the firmament allowing it to be reabsorbed into the source of light but there is no need for Celestia to create a cover of darkness over the source of light since darkness cannot be seen and so the darkness is absorbed on the far side of the source of light relative to Equestria.

Maybe it makes sense but curious to know what you guys think.

I could buy this, but maybe Luna also does it because she just wants ponies to see something interesting a night; basicalky adding her own artistic flare? For example, maybe she just really likes the crescent shape, so she chooses that method of phased dimming. Also, what about different colored stars?

There would be no need for starships since Equestria is their entire physical world. Other universes can exist alongside in parallel but you would use magic to travel there instead.

That's possible as well, since the moon is just a window from the outside. It's just as far as I know the moon has never been depicted as anything but whole. Even in the initial season 1 storybook the moon is a full sphere with a shadow cast over it creating the crescent shape.

The holes in the firmament can go all the way through the barrier which would make the star appear white or the firmament itself can be sculpted into a lens to absorb specific wavelengths of of the light spectrum like a prism. giving her control over what colour they are.

Yes there is a second outer barrier which keeps light and darkness contained the firmament in this context refers specifically to the barrier that protects physical Equestria but there is a second much larger barrier that keeps light and darkness contained to a finite area. It could be ellipsoidal with light and darkness at either end or the sources of both could exist somewhere in the middle between the edge an Equestria. This outer boundary works like a mirror allowing the both light and darkness to eventually return to the other.

Both light and darkness are abstract energy, magic in its purest forms if you will and like all energy it cannot be destroyed, only transferred into different states of being. Both forces attract the other by nature of being it's opposite I just used magnetic to make it easier to explain but since they are magic with the right spell that energy could be given magnetic qualities or any other magical spell though they would eventually return to their natural state.

Yes, the sun and the moon (and the stars) act as openings allowing them to pass through the firmament and to Equestria. There is light and darkness in everything, with living things have a variation on the amount of light and darkness within themselves. The reason ponies look very friendly and cutesy is because they are naturally attuned and usually born with light magic inside them which affects their appearance. Creatures that have a lot of darkness inside them, tend to look more vicious and menacing which led to the belief that light and darkness are allegories for good and evil which is just a misconception. Luna's 'true' form is Nightmare Moon, pure darkness to Celestia's light. The only trouble is because light and darkness are opposites, they can create conflict and so she chooses her current form which is 'shadow', darkness that can only exist because of light.
