Could someone explain to me how "Friendship is Magic"? I certainly don't feel like im getting any stronger in magic when I make friends. Was the show actually misleading?

Because “Friendship is Based and Redpilled” wasn’t really child friendly

As long as they're loyal, honest, kind, funny, generous and magical you can conquer the world!!

Friendship actually manifests as tangible magic in their world, but loosely, you can interpret it to mean "With good friends by your side anything is possible!"
Friendship = accomplishing greater feats together than alone

You're not alone, a lot of bronies still confuse the Element of Magic with literal magic. Day 1 lore is just too hard to grasp in this fandom.

It's strange, your magic should be stronger. Are you sure the tools and rituals you're using to measure it are calibrated correctly?

Wasn't that sunset's redemption arc, she learned that the power she wanted came from friendship and not being a princess. Sunset and Cozy are the same character.

Making friends with the right people is magic. See Jeffery Epstein for examples.
