/mlp/ Gmares Server!
Server status: https://www.battlemetrics.com/servers/gmod/24205952
Server Video Archive: https://pony.tube/c/mlpgmodserverarchive/videos
To play on the server you need to install Garry's Mod.
(For Linux users please check the "LINUX Guide")
LINUX Guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3274314614
1.Enable the 64 bit Chromium Beta (which improves performance and allows extra features such as the media player to work.)
Steam > Library > Garry's Mod > Betas > Beta Participation > x86-64-Chromium + 64-bit binaries
2.Subscribe to the addon collection.

3.Download content packs: HL1:S, Episode 1/2, TF2 content and CS:S content+maps. OR DOWNLOAD THE GAMES THROUGH STEAM AND MOUNT THEM IN GMOD.
DUE TO A RECENT GMOD UPDATE YOU DO NOT NEED THE CONTENT FOR EP 1 AND 2 AND CSS ANYMORE except for the MAPS and certain audio files.
You STILL NEED CSS MAPS and the HL:Source content if you DO NOT have the games mounted. Sub to it below:
Maps for CSS: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2895386362
HL: Source Content: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3176936772
4.Apply the CEF codec fix to allow support for Youtube and other media sources.

yea i have a graphics card but the few times i've tried gmares i got btfo once the player count got big enough. I'm on linux and tried giving the game as much i/o and cpu priority as possible, even dedicating the tlreads for it but it just gets unplayable on that zombie gamemode once there's more than a 1 or 2 players.

I would say most of the lag in Gmod is just at the beginning when you are loading in. And the more object/models it has to load in, the more draw calls are performed (which is part of the engine), and that can increase CPU time. More plugins, even extra plugins could also increase loading times and performance depending on what they are. Disabling shadows also reduces draw calls, too.
The Havok physics engine that the custom Source engine uses is also not that optimized on modern systems, and is in fact slightly broken on 64-bit (32-bit physics actually work properly. There's a video about this regression somewhere on YT).
Lots of people blame internet latency for that, but usually it's not that, unless the server that is hosting the Gmod server is slow all of a sudden, or your own connection is laggy (your Internet bitrate doesn't matter if your ping time is high).
tl;dr is yes, Gmod is a game that is over 18 years old at this point, with lots of improvements even to performance, and it could run just the same way on toasters back then. You really don't need to worry. Just know that some lag in Gmod is expected and normal, for better or for worse
