I also like the one where they quote alice cooper's unfinished sweet, really badass and unlike alice they repeat it more, which was the right call

agreed, the version in assassin has more time to sink in. by the time i was starting to get into the cooper riff it was already onto the next one.

i think the band photo is fine, it's the other elements that look sort of off. like you have this stylized logo on the front, then a generic typeface for all the text on the back.

Damn, I forgot.
Some of I think has to do with some of those end of year releases being released earlier somewhere else compared to the rest of the world...
Gonna add another vote for The Divine Wings of Tragedy then (originally I thought it came out in 1997 - but no, it came out in 1996 in Japan and therefore counts as a '96 album).

gothic metal. admittedly i'm not terribly familiar with the genre, but from what i've heard it doesn't sound rooted in trad, at least not enough to make it onto the yearly charts. same reason why melvins - houdini got the axe on 1993's.

It's funny reading the earliest Kerrang and see how Def Leppard saw themselves and how fans and critics saw them. And the fact that they plainly said that they didn't think that High N' Dry got a good reception because Saxon's Denim and Leather was released around the same time and was so undeniably heavy metal.

Colombian thrash (obviously influenced by Sepultura). I would maybe recommend this since it was released in 1996, it was however self-released and didn't get a label release until 2016.

In regards to what genre the first album is, perhaps groove/thrash on some songs. Not really sure.
You could probably call stuff on their second album nu metal, but that wouldn’t describe much on their first album.
The albums after the debut album are definitely less metal and also not as aggressive or heavy. Though traces remain.
It could be that metal archives didn’t accept them or it could be that no one submitted them. I don’t know which is the case. The first album only had 4000 copies released, so it may be somewhat obscure. Or just overshadowed by their non metal albums.

Outside is one of several ballads from their 3rd album, which is significantly different from their first album (and even their second to some extent).
If their first album was like that, I wouldn’t have submitted it.

Ok, i have listened to most of the Tormented record. And you must either be trolling or be fucking retarded. This is 100% nu-metal, it even has that shitty numetal beat in every single song like all other numetal bands. At best it's badly played stoner rock
Surf rock and old hardcore punk is more metal sounding than this.

What sort of beat are you referring to? There’s no way it’s 100% nu metal. The last 2 songs aren’t even hard rock.
Maybe you could call it some weird mix of stuff, but I feel like some songs are too fast to be typical nu-metal. Would it count as alt metal? Anyways I don’t think it’s gonna get on the chart.

At around 1:50 ish, the one beat featured in every single numetal band, everyone is doing it.

I hear what you mean. I don’t know if there’s a name for that type of riff but it’s similar to the riff in blind by korn.
That’s probably the most nu-metal song on the first album. (and strangely Iirc one of the few with solos).

His 80s albums are fantastic. But he should've used a real drummer on Wild Frontier. The album version is good but the live version sounds amazing

Are you sure that all the songs on there have it, or were you exaggerating for effect? For instance, the song after it, "Painful", seems rather different.

Fun fact: you can hear something very similar to the blind riff on at least 2 songs on Roots.
Around the start on this song:

Towards the end on this one:

For reference, "Blind" by korn:

Are there any standout songs from Load? I never listened to most of it.
Aside from that, if you liked Chaos AD, it's worth checking Roots out in any case. While it's not exactly traditional metal (and wouldn't really fit on the chart), It's not a total departure from Sepultura's previous album.

no idea, haven't listened to it beyond a few (bad) songs.

noted. the one time i listened to chaos AD i fucking hated it and thought it was a monumental step down from arise.

Pretty cool Dutch NWOBHM album, but a complete retarded band name, obviously taken from the Jimi Hendrix song, but it's just dumb as a band name in my opinion.

Yeah. Pic related is French NWOBHM. Pretty good. Don't know why they had to produce the vocals like shit though.

both heavier and much better than i expected it to be. much of this sounds like the heavier deep purple songs from the time and there's some parallels to early rainbow and uriah heep, too.

i will say, i think the highs off look at yourself are much stronger than a lot of the stuff off d&w. look at yourself, shadows of grief and especially july morning imo are heep's best work. only song off demons that i think is up to that standard is rainbow demon (and maybe the spell, but i haven't listened to that one in a while)

D&W as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The individual tracks are all very good of course, but the way they flow together and compliment one another to create an overall experience is what puts the record in the upper echelon for me. It's a masterpiece in album crafting.
Top track for me is probably The Wizard

i'd say easy livin' kind of doesn't fit with the rest of the album, at least thematically - but otherwise i agree.

Ive heard that one before and its good. I do love the more rock 'n roll feel you get in speed metal over the more aggression you see in thrash metal. I guess its why i like speed metal more, youve got good energy but with less anger in the music

>I do love the more rock 'n roll feel you get in speed metal over the more aggression you see in thrash metal.
for me it's how exhilarating it sounds, thrash sounds like being repeatedly being bashed over the head with a hammer while speed metal sounds like being taken on a fucking amusement park ride

I think Gary Barden has a great voice, but it's not an exceptional one. He's not a Division 1 vocalist. For a vocalist to reach Division 1 I think they have to have an an exceptional and unique voice like Dio, Coverdale, Dickinson, Halford, Tate etc etc. Something that is instantly recognizable.
Anyways, good album.

I was blasting this on the treadmill yesterday. Imagine what would happen if Slayer kept playing like they did on Show No Mercy. The guitars are even tuned to the same key:

highly recommend that album to any fans of rainbow and anthem, terra rosa's style is pretty much those two bands melded together and with some extra progressive flourishes throughout

it does, i'm checking warning out for the first time since most of the doom i'm familiar with is the traditional style (e.g. saint vitus), been looking to get into the more depressing, crushing style like this and pallbearer.

Gonna throw in some votes for a few more 1996 releases:
Ayreon - Actual Fantasy
Blitzkrieg - Ten
Seasons of the Wolf - Seasons of the Wolf
Patrick Rondat - Amphibia
Tragedy Divine - Visions of Power
Wardog - Scorched Earth
