Bruce plays the guitar and piano albeit at a basic level, in the 80s before the band had 3 guitarists he even played additional rhythm guitar live on Revelations. If a song has a solo Bruce writing credit then he composed the music minus the guitar solos.

If they are very good at their instrument it can definitely take the act up a more than a few notches. But really, anon. Otherwise, they don't really have to, but they risk being overshadowed by the band.

Anthony Kiedis is the single most obvious proof that a frontman/singer/vocalist neither needs to know how to play any musical instrument, nor have a good singing voice, nor know how to dance and doesn't need any knowledge in music theory to be a very successful music artist.

He is one of the very few astronomically lucky singers that got to have a beast of a bassist like Flea, a literal powerhouse of a drummer in Chad Smith and a guitar god in John Frusciante all in the same band doing all the musical work while he only needs to think of some lyrics and dance like a crazy crackhead.

Jokes aside, he wrote some amazing lyrics and his singing(talking) just fits the style of music that is the Red hot chilli peppers and no other singer would have done as well as him and neither would he have done it successfully in any other band.

Yeah like, everybody has a different voice and a different perception of art which may or may not lead to the development of different forms of sound, sometimes the voice just fits so nicely that said voice becomes somewhat irreplaceable within that particular music, that's why rhcp has functioned so well even through the many guitarist changes, plus with John they have that alternative sound which blends all kinds of emotions and forms tightly delivered by their powerful chemistry as a band. So yeah I definitely agree that he is a great example.
