how much do you wear down your picks before throwing them away?
is needing fresh picks constantly the sign of a good player who is used to that level of consistency or is the player that can use anything they have handy and still sound good superior?

For me:
John Petrucci: technique, speed, precision and complexity

Idk if anyone here saw my posts trying to troubleshoot why I was getting a high pitched noise when i ran an HM-2W through an NS-2 and into my katana. I noticed other people were having this issue with the pedal combo. I actually managed to get it working. I stopped using the x cable method and just put the HM-2W after the pedal and it stopped the high pitched noise even when the noise gate was off. I was then able to remove the seperate feedback using the NS-2. It left a bit of a noise floor though. Somebody mentioned why I wasn't just using the pedals like the noise supressor in boss tone studio. So I actually gave it a try. While the noise gate in boss tone studio wouldnt get rid of feedback, it did take massively raise the noise floor. So now I use both the NS-2 to get rid of feedback and the boss tone studio noise gate to raise the noise floor. Sounds perfect now. Now back to actually playing my guitar. Here is a picture of my humble setup.

they’re not horrible for the price range but all the ones I played had something missing from the preamp. idk what it was but it just didn’t have that punchy, aggressive stingray tone. would be nice to be able to upgrade to the 35, but they’re overpriced more so than the 3 to 34 series upgrade.

from the total amount of time you have a guitar in your hands, what percentage goes to actual practice/rehearsal/playing-along and how much just noodling?
>>

I don’t noodle. It may seem like noodling but I am making calculated decisions on what I am playing, focusing on rhythms/progressions/melodies. after playing bass for 3 years my technique and timing had gotten refined to a point where my entire practice was studying/learning songs and composition

i have probably 1000-2000 hrs on guitar and by my estimate 70% is playing along music while i'm recording it or while im recording parts for random stuff, 29% is just noodling and maybe 1% is conscious practice.
i really should practice more because sometimes i have an idea and i cant replicate it because i suck but i'm just too shit. i'm over 30 and never bothered to learn shreddan.

I'm thinking of buying a 5 string set, and using the BEAD strings to use tuned to EADG on my 30" scale bass. From what I can tell this will make the tension similar to medium-heavy gauge strings on a 34" scale bass. Will this not work? Am I missing something?

Get a standard single pick up one, you're never going to use the neck pick up and it gets in the way of your playing a lot, plus stingrays are heavy as fuck and the neck is really chunky so make sure to try one in a store to see if you can handle it instead of online ordering

It's funny, back in the early 2003 to 2007 (or maybe as late as 2008?) era you'd see cheese pizza randomly posted on all boards all the time. No Anons remain from the oldfag days so no one remembers but that's part of the reason why 4chan used to have such a bad reputation amongst the casual normie shitstains demographic. They'd open 4chins, see cheese pizza, and immediately nope the fuck out. Then they'd run around the internet telling all the other NPCs what an evil and vile website 4chan was. All the negativity directed at 4chan was actually a good thing back in the day because it was a preemptive chemotherapy against the kind of malignant cancer that has been steadily killing this site since the 2016 election. The cheese pizza issue was only addressed after the general population started getting online using smartphones, Moot was lusting after increased page views and it was becoming counterproductive. But before that almost no fucks were given by this site's administration.
The truth is 4chan was always, at least in part, a pedo hub. So it should come as no real surprise actual glowie pedo's were in control of the site throughout its entire history. As a matter of fact tanime pedo's still run /a/ to this very day.
Oh, now it turns out jew pedo's have always run /pol/ too? Big surprise, if you've got shit for brains. Moot was most certainly a pedo and also a jew. Pedo jews have been in control of most of the mainstream internet since its inception, ask yourself why 4chan would be any different.
This is the reason a real Anon would never buy a pass no matter what the hell happens, fuck all these pedo jews and their NSA housed surveillance systems.

>when you say “schizo”

>slime’s contribution
I recommend using a PAINT BRUSH in place of a pick on acoustic. You can get some articulation of notes by applying pressure or wispy notes when gliding over them. Because the notes don’t immediately die from muting, you get some sexy swells. Also, the bristles will hit your pick guard for a nice effect. It sounds like brushes on the drums.
Listen:
https://voca.ro/1oucaI5jUZ6O
Try it out. I used to use a motorized fan from a dollar store and swapped the blades for a few loose e strings cut to about two inches. This gives a nice swell effect like a dulcimer.

It kills the sustain of notes behind the nut, which is useful if you’re recording an acoustic.
I never liked it because you’d have to slide it on and off like a condom before a tapping passage, but damned if it doesn’t sound cleaner.

yes. it's not possible to genuinely teach people through online courses. you need to at least be on a video call and have a back and forth. one size fits all approaches to learning have never worked and are either a compromise due to scale and funding (public schooling) or a grift (online courses)

By design, what these courses offer is a linear approach. However, learning a guitar is very often NOT a linear process. We prefer to noodle to explore ideas. Or, I think I’m better than I am and boom I actually hit a cool idea or a new concept by serendipity.
This extends to learning to read music, CAGED, jazz theory, sweeping/economy picking - humans tend to SKIP AROUND. I’d argue that a buffet-style approach is a better way of consuming a course’s content and testing yourself on whatever they offer.
I’ve posted the ABRSM grading system for guitar before and that can inform you of where you should be at in terms of instrumental difficulty. This goes for method books, too.
Only the lamest do page 1, page 2, page 3, etc. Instead, your main priority should be to keep it fun and exciting. Even at three decades of playing, I still look at courses the same way. Sometimes it’s like:
>hey give me what I need I already know this shit
>you motherfucker that’s gold, give me more of that
I prefer the reverse engineering approach of trusting my ear and then going, I have to figure that out.
As for courses, they’re grifting in the same way as any other niche: it’s part of their platform. Beato even has a theory book, but his early stuff was how-to. Now he gets to nod at Flea, pretend Les Claypool’s bass is balanced, or that anyone gives a shit about Greg Koch’s “career”. Who knows what his next grift will be, maybe a politician or lobbyist. Then he can tour the YouTube nostalgia circuit before his Hapa son shoots up a frat in Santa Barbara

I took actual lessons in person for three or four years and learned a ton, and the most I learned online was from Truefire. $100 a year all access or you can buy individual courses. For the amount of content from tons of great players the annual subscription is great.

I just started a classical course and it is the most well put together material I have ever used including books. I’ve spent over $3500 on educational material for guitar and bass over half a decade. The workload follows a very logical progression and there is no thinking about what to practice, just going through the videos covers your practice routine for the day; you can double up or do whatever else you want after. I also learned a song my first day which doesn’t happen in a lot of course.
