There is no direct link between having a high IQ and liking classical music

Bach sucked, a lot of his music sounds procedurally generated

old mu days were basically pitchfork and fantano echo chamber

i sincerely think that at least here on /mu/ classical attracts more midwits than anything because they think that's the high IQ thing to do

this board instigated its own demise by hitching the cloutwagon to a series of awful bands

Every band would never have been as popular as they are now without their producers engineering it to sound good, therefore the producer should be credited as part of the band.

Every crazy idea or shitty idea by (your) favorite artist was filtered through a producer who made it sound good.

music is an acquired taste. it's pattern recognition. you "like" recognizing patterns
in theory, there's nothing special about liking certain music. it just means you heard it a lot
now, in practice, we are all socialized with massive amounts of pop music and seeking out classical music or jazz or early medieval iberian songs, slowly getting through it, pushing through the initial indifference or even disgust, means you're intellectually curious, have strong impulse control, and also, probably, have the disposable income and time to explore. so, in an indirect way, having "better" taste may mean you are a "better" person
anyway, that's probably not that controversial. my real controversial opinion, after all of this, is that you have to be careful what you acclimate to. I don't want to like jazz. I don't want to be one of those people. they sound absolutely insufferable. in fact, it looks like their appreciation of jazz impairs their enjoyment of other music. so I actively avoid jazz. fuck jazz

pop music has no value and it pains me to see 90% of the threads on /mu/ being about it

What about psychedelic pop or power pop?

Music is overrated. It's good but not as good as most people pretend it is. Overall it's just sometimes pleasant background noise like a podcast.

If music was good, you wouldn't get tired of a good song. It's a disposable medium. I've heard songs in commercials that are as good as the shit music nerds claim is genius.

This board is genuinely dead, would be better to a) abandon it (what I'm about to do) b) build something else out of it (change topic) c) close it down (freeze the board as it is "locking" it)

If you only listen to a single genre, you aren't allowed to have any opinions on music

the issue with you is that you see liking music exclusively in this manner to the point that you become afraid of liking other type of music, since you are afraid on what others might think of you if you like a certain genre considered weird or elitist
this is preventing you from expanding your taste and listening to great music
you are a faggot afraid of judgement, you will not enjoy yourself fully because you are a pussy

it depends honestly, one can still be open-minded and be truly aware of what they like even if it is a single genre of music, these people can still give their opinions on music while being fully honest on their lack of taste & their favoritism with a single genre
it becomes as issue when they are stubborn inflexible and adamant in their favorite genre, they'd refuse to understand other type of music and prevent themselves on enjoying it simply because it's not what the genre they like
that type of people are untermensch

The only issue is that their classical music stuff is mostly terrible. Not the fault of the app but the users who upload the scores. They're probably kids doing transcriptions for school assignments.

Metalheads have the WORST music taste
No other group compares, they listen to nothing but metal, some classic hard rock and punk at most, but that's it.
If you ask them about any other music outside of those genres they are clueless, they don't know jack shit about it; they'll simply say some stupid shit like "eewww I don't like it metal 4 life".
The rare occasion they like something outside those genres is usually shit, they are genuinely incapable of recognizing good music outside of metal, their heads are deep fried for listening too much noisy garbage music.
They even have the ego big enough to gatekeep metal, as if adding something they don't percieve as metal into their shitty music taints it, what a joke.
Metal music fucking sucks and you are genuinely fucking stupid if you like it, you are a lesser being, a troglodyte who deserves to be discriminated by society.

/mu/ has no interest in music other than as social capital. They consume enough music that their ability to appreciate the art becomes atrophied and the main goal is to listen to more obscure stuff.

They are remarkably in love with off-kilter pop music for a board full of people who take pride in their passion for experimental music, and arguments devolve into interminable baiting between "it's boring" / "no, it's good" / "no, it's shit" because nobody has any basic knowledge of music theory or ability to articulate their opinions beyond "feels."

The few informed listeners of academic music spend their time signaling to the rest of the board and leverage their taste for fifteen minutes of online pseudo-notoriety.

/mu/ consists of people who aren't as weird as they like to think but use their ample free time and piracy to invest in a hobby that makes them feel special or sophisticated, allowing them to compensate for their lack of social skills and failures in concrete or academic pursuits.

The biggest irony is that the vast majority of /mu/ is a hivemind ruled by a handful of online tastemakers mostly concerned with maintaining a balance between supporting "alternative" pop that will appeal to misunderstood teenagers and maintaining street cred among bored college students who constantly seek out "experimental" music for their mild amusement, negating the cultivation of individual taste or critical thinking in relation to music.

It's a feedback loop of posturing, masturbatory attitudes, and enough layers of irony to suffocate any hope of meaningful conversation. This last element--irony--is vital to allowing /mu/ and similar collectives to ignore the reality of their situation and disregard posts as this one with little more than tongue-in-cheek one-word responses. One-word critiques of albums: "This album is boring" and nothing else.

Deep down you all know you're going nowhere in life and this is all a farce

99% of "genres" invented in the last like 50 years only exist to make hipsters feel special and don't actually represent a significant enough variation on a theme to warrant their existence
