I was a big metallica fan in 03 although I was like 12 years old, and it seemed like most fans were pretty much already over them from load/reload, so st anger was kinda the final nail for a lot of people. Like I said I was 12 so this was all gathered from forums.
but yeah I agree, it was an interesting experiment and I think it's a bit underrated personally. Metallica is like the most normie of the metal bands so of course they're not gonna be down with some weird mixing. The snare sounds cool imo, but I get why it's hated so much just cuz of who their fans are. I do also rate it under anything they'd done up to that point pretty much so I can't blame it all on the mixing

It's because the inspiration they had was kinda bad itself, plus the situation they were in at the time, the band was on life support, in fact it was on the verge of dying, James got mindbroken for good with rehab and so on.
And yet it was the last album where they actually tried to go on with something new, they did it with the black album taking inspiration from all the hard rock at the time like guns n roses, soundgarden and even motley crue, then they used alternative rock with alice in chains, soundgarden again and corrosion of conformity for load, the last time they did it with st anger, they had new metal, deftones, korn, soad, slipknot and so on...
Then from the late 2000s onward when the world and the whole system and industry changed, they started like covering themselves or something.

It was shit on a level that selling out to MTV and radio rock with the hack album or childishly snubbing the new bassist they willingly hired on ...And Justice could barely hold a candle to.

on youtube there used to be a painstakingly re-recorded cover version of the entire album with better production by some soundalikes, what stood out was that there was just no salvaging the lyrics. the reason for their awfulness becomes clear on watching the documentary.
