Does this label piss anyone else off as well? Like its visual aesthetic and a lot of the music is way too consciously composed to fit some institutional high fashion art gallery thing... I dunno. Though its also released some records I like like the Religious Knives one (though its definitely weaker than other releases of theirs). Or am I being stupid and neurotic? I feel like a band has capitulated once they've released on Sacred bones

They ape on gothic and occult aesthetic but none there is like that, so it reeks a bit of fraud

Never heard of it and I agree it looks & sounds gay but then its hard for me to hate a label that has releases by Alan Vega and Khanate.

Related, Stephen O'Malley is really annoying but he's also one of my favourite guitarists. Crippled Lucifer is probably the best thing in doom since Sabbath and Khanate is absolutely incredible but he's also such a pretentious dweeb sidling up to the fine art world and trying to make Sunn O))) this big elevated thing when its just Black Sabbath deconstruction (its not even really drone because there's no static harmony).

So it makes perfect sense that he'd release the new Khanate album on Sacred Bones because they're pretty aligned in that way, even if Khanate are a great band themselves

This explains it well. I first came upon them when listening to Amen Dunes' album Freedom. I was a little confused by the label's macabre/esoteric aesthetic and the big fucking logo slapped on every album cover. So I decided to check out some of their music and listened to an album by The Soft Moon and frankly wasn't impressed. Muh dark spooky post-rock. Also listened to a few albums by Marissa Nadler, who is on the label if I recall correctly. Though I think I only listened to that because Fantano was shilling for her (sad I know). Her music was okay, but not really, because it still felt underdeveloped. More aesthetic than anything. Which probably describes the whole Sacred Bones roster. But what do I know? I didn't listen much further. Just seemed like the kind of music an overeducated alt-ish fundie would produce. I like Julia Holter but I could imagine them signing her sooner or later given the stuff she's put out recently. Anyway, just seems like the label was started by some left-hand-path NYU grad who grew up on goth rock and bands like Swans, Coil and Current 93 and now makes a living showcasing nu glossy indie artists with none of the flare, grit or magick of those acts. Just a sterile product for purchase.
