I do wonder if removing the crackle is somehow losing the point a bit, on this track specifically.

>BÖC Inferno
Just marathoned this.
Don't really know what to say.
You'd think that after so many good fire-focused tracks, "Inferno" would fit right in.
Strangest thing they've released since Club Ninja.
Not a fan, but have the feeling it might grow on me.

Modern era BoC feels at its most inspired when they're making their very direct banger type of tracks or ambient ones, and it feels the most uninspired when its trying to do the cinematic downtempo stuff but in a more musical and less rhythmic way. Deep Time is amazing, so is Memory Death, The Process is beautiful too, and Platonia while it feels like a weird closer is a cool track in its own right. But tracks like HHLL, Into the Magic Land, Blood in the Labyrinth, Americanada just aren't particularly interesting to listen to, there's no rhythmic pulse to lock into, there's no hypnotic groove, the tracks just come and go. Labyrinth is saved by its vocal sample, which is to be fair fantastic but then after that it just goes back to the same noodling for 2 more minutes.
When you have these polished arrangements and a cinematic sound you expect some progression out of the songs and when it happens its amazing (Propechy, Capricorn, Father and Son, Naraka, Flesh, Time and Space) but when it doesn't go anywhere it just does not hit the same way their older stuff did. They need to abandon their cinematic approach to downtempo tracks because it was boring on TH and it's boring on Inferno, thankfully most tracks on Inferno are not doing the cinematic thing.
It's a 9 out of 10 for me, the great tracks are just that good, they elevate the whole thing. Way better than Tomorrow's Harvest, much more varied and interesting to listen to.

Don't really like it, all the religion stuff is just too much for me. I just cannot imagine any possible constellation of irony, sincerity and cheekiness that would make me seriously want to listen to a tune with a vocoded "I am god the ultimate resonance", hare krishna, I love the lord more than any physical being, etc.. etc.. ever again. I'm willing to grant they're sincerely engaging with some kind of concept according to their own sensibilities but then it's just clear their sensibilities don't speak to me on any level I would find valuable musically or intellectually. It kinda feels like talking with someone who's really into astrology, even while they acknowledge it's bullshit and they just do it for shits and giggles still you know a person like that is gonna be kinda daft deep down.
Blood in the labyrinth is good tho, way the si/guitar starts and then after one measure the beat comes in is kino. Maybe I'll make a little EP playlist with the vocal tracks removed.

It’s grown on me a lot. I think the marketing before release lead everyone to believe we were getting Geodaddi 2.0, (something abstract, dark and experimental) so it’s no surprise quite a few people panned it on launch for being one of BOC’s most thematically explicit and accessible albums.
Now that I’ve had time to live with it, I think these are selling points rather than criticisms of the record. Yes it presents itself as dark, but there’s a lightness and a sense of humour to it that wasn’t apparent to me on first listen. It’s dark in a kitsch, campy way like nightrider; if it took itself too seriously (a la Geodaddi), it wouldn’t be as enjoyable imo. The lads are having fun for once, I think they’ve earned it

Say what you will about the other tracks, but if you’re able to set aside the religious subject matter I think that
>I love you but I love the Lord
>more than any physical being
might be hook of the year for me. Arguably the catchiest vocal part to a BOC song ever

We can only hope. I don’t want to lean into the hints about “monthly” hexa-flexis bucause knowing boc that kind of timeframe is absurd. Hopefully it just means smaller, more frequent releases through music70, but who knows?

>knowing boc that kind of timeframe is absurd
it's only absurd if you assume all the work isn't already done and is being done on the fly. But could be that the entire EP is already finished.
either way we'll find out very soon if this monthly theory has any merit or not, I doubt it simply because it's too good to be true, we just got another album so getting more so fast seems unlikely

it's calculated, forced, surface level normie stuff that pretends to be deep and mysterious. always has been i guess, but at least in the past they managed to make it musically effective. now it feels a bit cringe like watching the little guy behind the curtain
