Has there ever been an extremely popular minority front man rock band in America like this?

Hootie and the Blowfish are alt rock so technically they count

Blessid Union of Souls had a couple hits in the '90s. The Veldt had some buzz with the hipsters. If we include solo artists, Lenny Kravitz was all over the radio in the '90s and 2000s.
I think Bloc Party is also being oversold here. I recall their first album being well liked and then people hating everything else they've put out since then.

Hootie and the Blowfish were rock. The lead singer just went on to do country in his solo career.

To be fair, that first Bloc Party album is absurdly good. You're remembering right though. Literally everything else they've ever done is shit. It's infuriatingly bad. Never been so disappointed in a band after loving a debut album like that.

Kings X, Living Colour. Skunk Anasie, and Faith No More prior to Chuck Mosley being replaced with Mike Patton (remembering that last one makes me feel old). All were very popular, if only for a brief period.

I liked I Still Remember and being optimistic before i heard that second album. Guess some bands just truly have one good album in them.

Does Lenny Kravitz count?
