I just noticed biketubers are saying "de-railer" now. I could have sworn when I was younger this was contentious. Only weirdos and Sheldon Brown called them that. The standard pronunciation was "de-railleeoor"". How do you say it?

we in russian just call it the shifter, because fuck the french word for it
and the part you call shifter gets the french name instead, мaнeткa, from manette- lever
you brits only have yourself to blame for choosing the wrong french word to keep lol

I say it french-like because I'm from quumbic but realistically, it's a De_rail_er grammatically so whatever
but also most wrenchlet cyclists use it to refer to the entire chain tensioning-and-alignment assembly but some say it only applies to the front one and some to only the back one and some to the whole system and some say its just the little bits that move the chain over which refer to other entire systems so because cyclists are retarded wrenchlets I try to get them to describe exactly where the device is and what specifically it's responsible for before talking to them further

It's so hard to talk to people about bikes if you're autistic and actually know things. Even people who know about bikes and you say the exact thing you want with all the correct technical terms and they will still ask you to clarify just because how many people don't know shit. I asked for a stem with very long reach from this guy I know and he still had to double check with me that I ment reach and not height because for sure someone talked to him about reach once and ment height. It's so frustrating but yet I understand why this happens.

look, Ivan, the thing in your pic is called a shifter in English. usually in cars it's called a "gear shift," or "shift knob." the thing it controls is the transmission. on a bike, the thing the shifter controls is the derailleur.
the lever IS the shifter. you say they don't call it that in the former USSR? fine, call it whatever you want in your language. but this is an English language website. you're calling the parts the wrong fucking thing. it's not about being mad at you, I'm trying to make you be understood.

The "Shifter" is just the device that interfaces with the transmission
For cars this is usually a lever, for bikes it can be twist shifters, or some kind of paddle shifter on the handlebars
The Transmission is what transmits power from the output crank to the wheels. For Cars it's a gearbox, for bikes it can also be a gearbox but is more commonly a derailleur
Just call them transmissions, it's the generic umbrella term for a bunch of different things

the french government bankrolled the american revolution and even sent a few auxilliaries/irregulars to fight. despite speaking english like a continent of cucks they owe their free existence to France (who in turn were being soft-bankrolled by the Dutch)

>americans so OBSESSED with using french words
we speak English and England was colonized by the French after the battle of Hastings in 1066 and subsequently their French words infected the English language.
it's just baked into the language we speak. it has absolutely nothing to do with being American or anything >>2074228
