Democratic lawmakers in New York are championing an innovative new piece of legislation that would protect residents by banning BB guns.
You read that right. Democrats think preventing people from using BB guns and other imitation firearms will somehow keep people safe.
New York Senate Bill S9212 was introduced in February, and it would amend the state’s General Business Law to expand regulations around airguns and other imitation weapons. It updates the legal definition of “imitation weapon” to include air rifles and pellet guns. Under the updated language, “Imitation weapon” refers to any device or object, “including an air rifle, pellet gun, or ‘B-B’ gun,” made of plastic, wood, metal or any other material which can be perceived as a firearm.
The measure would also impose more severe restrictions on who can purchase certain types of air guns. It prohibits companies from selling these products to anyone under 18. Currently, one has to be at least 16 to purchase these products.
The bill also toughens enforcement by increasing the financial penalty for violators. Anyone who breaks this law “shall be subject to a civil penalty of not more than one thousand dollars for each violation,” an increase from the previous cap of $500.

It also expands the state’s existing “prohibited activities” law to cover imitation weapons, which requires gun companies to “establish and utilize reasonable controls and procedures to prevent its qualified products or imitation weapons from being possessed, used, marketed or sold unlawfully in New York state.”
So, not only do New York Democrats want regular people not to defend themselves against violent criminals, they don’t even want them to have fun by playing with air rifles. This is yet another example of what I call “nanny state nonsense.” These politicians have no desire to actually protect people — they just like passing laws that will needlessly criminalize people to make it appear as if they are trying to promote public safety.
It will be interesting to see how pro-gun groups challenge this law if it is passed. The Supreme Court’s Bruen ruling might apply — even if it involves imitation guns that are not considered lethal weapons.

If BB guns aren’t really guns then they should not be protected under the second amendment.
They should ban them, they’re inherently dangerous and should not be given to children and are of no use to adults. They’re a toy not fit for purpose

They’re referred to as imitation guns in the article. Do you want me to compile a data set of injuries caused by these air rifles, because I won’t do that.
Imitation guns can also be used to menace the public and make the jobs of law enforcement officers more difficult as they now have to become experts in what’s a real gun

You yourself are admitting that these things aren’t safe where there’s people around

>Oh my God can you be more of a vagina?
I actually think children shouldn't be playing with BB guns until they're like 13-14 and can be trusted not to shoot either their own or someone else's eye out. 16 to purchase actually sounds fucking perfect.

>They’re referred to as imitation guns in the article.
Then why didn't they try to ban replica guns?
>Do you want me to compile a data set of injuries caused by these air rifles, because I won’t do that.
Because you can't do that. It's so incredibly rare that anyone has ever died from a bb gun.
>Imitation guns can also be used to menace the public and make the jobs of law enforcement officers more difficult as they now have to become experts in what’s a real gun.
So again, why isn't New York banning replicas?
>You yourself are admitting that these things aren’t safe where there’s people around
Where did I say that?

lol you can fuck right off. If this was limited to only NYC then I could understand it, but try telling some farm kid upstate that he can't touch a bb gun until he's 16 years old - as the 16 year old kids in his neighborhood are out hunting with actual firearms at their age.
It's painfully obvious which of these posters ITT grew up in the city vs suburbs/small towns/farmland.

>1. Kids fucking shoot their eyes out with these all the time.
Ah damn, and to think the whole time I was in junior high I thought there was some sort of pirate theme going on with all the eye-patches I was seeing...
>2. Kids do stupid shit and get themselves shot by police all the time with these things.
Black kids in the city, maybe. Most white parents teach their kids not to point guns at police. Again, if the bill was limited to NYC this would be somewhat more reasonable.

Alright then, BRO, compile a list of all the injuries and then we'll compare it to all the other shit that New Yorkers do that should be banned. Like football or having a penis.
I swear you fucks are trying to out-ban the British.

Now here's my question: literally why shouldn't they? They're toys that can cause genuine massive injury if used improperly; this type of shit gets banned all the time. If anything they're being merciful JUST limiting them to needing 18+ to buy them. Like what is the difference between this and other banned toys like lawn darts or sky dancers? Unless you want those unbanned too.

>See those dead kids don't count because they're BLACK
I can think of only one example off the top of my head where a white kid pointed a pellet gun at an officer - and that was a suicide by cop situation. Most... not all, unfortunately... but most white kids aren't flashing bb guns like they're some kind of hard gangster or going out in public acting tough and brandishing a pellet gun at random people.

I really wish I could see the entire study without having to be part of an organization first.
>Now here's my question: literally why shouldn't they?
Because it's the first step in teaching kids how to be familiar with firearms, and yes basic firearms safety. A major contributor to accidents - especially among adults - is the lack of familiarity and respect for firearms that you (should) learn at a young age. Like the four cardinal rules of gun safety, which all but completely guarantee you will not have any firearms accidents if you follow them.
If these bb and pellet guns are banned, they miss out on that experience and the first firearm they will handle, and have to learn from, will be an actual firearm that uses real bullets. Which means more people will die.

>cause it's the first step in teaching kids how to be familiar with firearms, and yes basic firearms safety.
You can do that with a nerf gun lol. It's still a toy not a fucking training sword.
Jokes aside, this whole idea falls apart because the entire point of this law is to prohibit anyone under the age of 18 from purchasing BB guns. If your entire logic is "parents should teach their kids how to use firearms!" then guess what dipshit; THEY STILL CAN! YOU CAN STILL BUY BB GUNS AND THEN USE THEM TO INSTRUCT YOUR KIDS UNDER THIS LAW. The ONLY things this law does are require BB guns to be painted brightly to ensure they aren't confused with real guns and require someone to be 18+ to purchase them. So literally what is your problem? If a child is buying these for themselves then obviously they're not gonna self teach gun safety, and I do not think you need a gun to be in gunmetal colors to teach firearm safety and handling with it. There is literally nothing stopping your example use case from still being done under this law; ironically it encourages using them for that exact purpose over anything else.

they're a violent toy that can cause concussions blindness or death.
Its not as dangerous as a gun, but there's no restrictions for anyone to get one. Its the same reason you wouldn't give metal tipped darts to a bunch of teens to play around with.
You're retarded aren't you? i hope you get blinded by some retarded kid with a BB gun.

You’re implying that city people think air rifles aren’t safe because they’re from the city, but people from the country don’t think that way.
Obviously there’s more people in cities and more targets for horrible children to aim at, ergo imitation firearms are safer in the country
