Posting my GD3. I love this stupid little car so much. No mods. Just a gd3 5 speed. Very fun to drive. It was $1200 and has 125,000 miles on it.

yeah, but the previous owner painted them black in the centers. I'm going to paint strip them sometime this weekend to get them back to an OEM+ look. Still looking for proper honda logos for the centers too

What's the point? Just get an Si or an R, there is literally no reason to manual swap a newer civic.
>>
>>28884683
Because the Si was never available as a hatchback and the R is too expensive. Tbh it's starting to look like the more viable option is to just get an Si off of Copart and just grab everything off of it that I need

>>

You will scratch it. Why wouldn't you just get an old early to mid 2000s Civic instead? Is this some stupid American 'keeping up with the Joneses' shit?

Hondas aren't known for being economical. Especially the Type-Rs, they're sports cars first and foremost.

Having that as your first car is lucky on the one hand - we were all kids once - but retarded on the other. Nothing wrong with it as a vehicle, but you need to build your way up to fast cars, not just jump into one without having any real road experience.

You will almost certainly crash it. You've been warned.

most of the dealers I saw have it in the 60k range, talking about the type r here
>>
>>28885639
>60k
How fucking rich are you that 60k is a small amount of money?
>>
>>28885644
>How fucking rich are you
quite the opposite, 60k is already far outside my budget
>>
>>28885645
I'm confused. I said Type-Rs are sports cars and you replied with a 'no', as if to imply they're not 'real' sports cars because they're too cheap. I'm reading too much into your reply I think.

Then again reading this thread highlights the US vs Euro/UK divide. I bought my first car outright - a used CL7 Accord with 80k miles - for £3.5k and did all the work on it myself. Yanks on the other hand will always buy new for tens of thousands, and it's seen as normal to be in debt. Here the only people who buy new cars are the wealthy, i.e., upper middle class.

For a first car here it's expected to buy a shitty 1.2 litre Ford Fiesta or something like that for under a grand. Then you 'graduate' to bigger engines and nicer things as time goes on. To start with a new sports car is unheard of unless it's financed to absolute shit and your relatives have a dark complexion.
>>
>>28885655
I just meant the marked up pricetag from the dealership is all, and since this is the honda generals I might as well ask here about the actual car itself
>>
Neighbor bought a new car, he's getting rid of his old one. It's a 1998 Honda CRV. Runs, drives reliably. Needs new wheels, tires, brake pads, rotors, battery (it starts and runs perfectly fine but had to use a jump pack). interior pretty clean considering the mileage and it was his daily driver. Helps he wasn't a smoker. 280k miles. Guy is asking $350 but I'll have to take it away with a trailer/tow truck. The amount of wearable items it needs is reason why he ended up just going out and buying a new CRV. Near 300k miles is heavy imo, but he's had this vehicle since new and has changed the oil every 3k miles, flushed the trans every 20k. I already priced out how much it would be to get it road worthy again
>top tier battery so I'm not stranded somewhere
$280
>5x brand new steel wheels because his are scuffed and bent up
$250 (including spare)
>5x brand new tires that aren't Chinesium garbage
$500 for 5 Hankook or whatever on sale tires that are $100 a pop all seasons from a name brand
>Powerstop front rotors and pads
$100 (rockauto)
>Powerstop rear drums and pads
$150 (rockauto)
>new plugs
$50
>synthetic oil and filter change because I don't want to be changing my oil every 3k like him
$70 ish depending on what's on sale

All in I'd be looking at sub $2k for a car that runs and drives with all brand new wearables. My only concern is the high mileage. At almost 300k miles, does it have much life left in it if there's no signs of any problems or broken shit?
>>
>>28885674
>At almost 300k miles, does it have much life left in it if there's no signs of any problems or broken shit?
There will be stuff like seals and bushings going out at that age, but if the engine has good compression and the transmissions shifts well id go for it
If you buy it and think it'll need more work than anticipated you can get well over 350 buy selling some trim pieces and parts on eBay and scrapping the rest.
No brainer to me
>>
>>28885655
Wish I could buy a low mile TSX for $8k
>>
>>28885840
that's what I figured as well. This guy having bought the vehicle brand new is really big on taking it to the dealer for any work it's needed over the years so he has a well documented history for it. Nothing leaks, motor isn't misfiring, runs cool, quiet, no check engine lights and the scanner didn't pull any codes. Like you said I figure I could always pull the new stuff I bought for it asnd get 75% of the money I spent on it them back and still make close to double what I paid for the vehicle alone. Here's to hoping I can get half a million miles out of this thing.

Is it a bad idea to buy offbrand engine air filter?

It's OK to cheap out on cabin filter right? I did buy the cheap version on that.
>>
>>28886745
Cheap air filter is based, I run ecogard.Autozone cabin and engine filters on my CM and it runs like a beast and has the cold A/C, so cold in fact that the condenser heatsoaks and the car becomes a slug on a hot day due to all the A/C drag when I blast it.

I want a CRV with an expected life span of 200k miles without surprise failures while maintained accordingly. I don’t want to replace a turbo or trans for thousands and I don’t want a hybrid. It needs to have less than 30k miles. Which gen do I buy
>>
>>28888715
Buy any one of them with a 2.4L engine, so we're talking 2002 to 2019 model CR-V before they facelifted it in 2020 and made it 1.5 turbo only.

I changed my starter last year and a few months after the stupid knock sensor went. Now that it isn't super cold I finally got all the lights off (and got back a few mpgs because of the sensor)

>>
>>28893917
Nice Anon, knock sensor is so annoying when it goes out on K24
>>
>>28893920
It would have been nice if they went at the same time. It is annoying trying to snake my hands and ratchet through the 4 inch gap from pulling back the intake mani, especially with a stupid ass giant 27mm socket on the end
>>
>>28893923
That's fucking horrifying but I'm glad you got it done, I paid over $600 4 years ago for that
>>
>>28893933
>I paid over $600 4 years ago for that
Holy shit dude, just the sensor? Was it at a dealer?
I think the (aftermarket) sensor was $40 and $6 for the socket. Maybe 120 for oem?
Even in an apartment lot you can fairly easily do this on a cm/cl in an hour or less
>>
>>28893943
It was an OEM senor form the dealer, the CEL was on, they had it on hand, and I needed it fixed because the car would make a horrible pinging sound when you revved it to 5K, the job could've been made cheaper with aftermarket parts but I didn't want any comebacks since the original one did go 18 years, 5 months, and 144,000 miles.
>>
>>28893951
>I didn't want any comebacks since the original one did xxx
Definitely a valid concern
I figured 40 minutes and some discomfort was worth that risk in my case.
I should have gotne for the oe sensor, but napa had it in stock same day only 7$ more than rockauto so rolling the dice was worth it
>>
>>28893964
If you do work yourself aftermarket stuff from the parts store is an absolute winner because you get a lifetime warranty on a lot of stuff, but when you're wrenchlet you have to buy once cry once, so buy OEM stuff when it's reasonable, or pay a shop markup to get an actual 2 year unlimited mile warranty, so that you're not wanting to kill yourself should something be dead out of the box, or die shortly after because parts are really kinda garbage these days.
>>
>>28893965
You can diy it yourself bro

>>28893973
I fucking despise working on cars Anon, I've been doing power steering fluid myself where I suck it out and pour new fluid in, battery when I need it, and more recently serpentine belt when I need it because you're spending $18 to fix the car instead of $200, but anything where the car needs to be lifted into the air, I am not doing it, with my luck I will drop the car on the ground or myself and it's the only one I've got, maybe if I had a bunch of shitboxes, I'd maintain them myself but I cannot have downtime on this this car which is currently leaking oil from the vtec solenoid yet again and leaving a puddle everywhere I go.
>>
>>28893980
I get it, car work sucks to do
The vtec solenoid stuff was a pain in the ass to do too. I had to do my pressure sensor up there a while back. Thankfully no leaks though
I do have 2 shitboxes thankfully, but I almost never drive my mr2
>>
Crossed over the 80k mile mark in my FK7 yesterday, everyone who says the turbo L15Bs pop their head gaskets by then is a lying sack of shit. Most of this has been spent with a tune and driving aggressively.
>>
>>28881034

>>
>>28895233
200HP FWD and a 6MT is all you need, Anon.
>>
>>28895235
if that was true, why would the s2000 exist and why would it cost about the same?
>>
>>28895254
An S2000 is not nearly as practical and pleasant to drive everyday as a Civic Si Anon, it has no balls at the rpms where the L15B is a freight train and it's a very stiff sporty roadster, which is great when you're in the canyons or at the track but it's just about the worst daily driven car for what you'd want it for.
>>
>>28895233
Yeah definitely. New hondas are still fine cars but the old lightweight ones are really the only ones worth having from a driving enjoyment point of view.

are these reasonable prices for an rsx type s? im mostly trying to find a close to stock one for dding since looks is generally what attracts me to a car first and a manual transmission is non-negotiable. my current car is a 2012 mitsu with 51k miles with the cvt and i fell in love with the rsx the first time i saw one on the highway about a month ago. i just wanna make sure im making an alright choice since this car checks pretty much all my boxes for what i want in a car but emotion vs logic usually is a tough battle for me

New Aisin AC compressor installed and it's ice cold. Those two lower bolts kinda suck. Had to disconnect the passenger mount and the front mount but that's only three 17mm fasteners out in the open. Also had to jump through some hoops to get the alternator warranty replaced for a bad bearing.

Why do these fuckers still use timing belts? Is it just a lame ass way to make money?
>>
>>28902895
It's only on the ancient SOHC V6 they've been holding onto, 4 cylinder has had timing belt since 2001 on K series and 2006 with the R18 engines in the Civic, with the old 90s design fading into history, everything is timing chain now.
>>
>>28902903
I was tempted to get a Honda Passport because I wanted a 6 cylinder engine SUV, but the timing belt degeneracy ruined it for me.
>>
>>28902909
I wouldn't stray from a nice J series SUV, because J series does run forever when the timing belt is done every 100,000 miles, but unfortunately we are talking well over $1400 to replace the timing belt tensioner, and water pump all in one go when it is needed, so I do understand why it can be a lot to chew on, try test driving a Honda CRV, hybrid or the 1.5T it is a nice sort of SUV type vehicle that has a timing chain.

brake pedal felt soft

new pads bite harder and brake better
pedal still feels soft
whenever the ACC kicks in and brakes the pedal gets proper hard but softens up quickly

what is my issue here?

maybe try to test your brake booster? here is a procedure from an older vehicle, but it should be similar to the one on yours. if you have a shop manual go by that.
you can also adjust your pedal free play under the dash, but it is a bitch to get under there. i can give you that page as well if you want to try it. i did a little searching and it seems spongy brake feel is common on ridgeline owner forums, you'd get better answers there on what they are doing for solutions.

What a fucking difference holy shit.
It feels so much stiffer and easier to drive now.

That's based Anon, you won't be disappointed when you feel how nice it rides, my Accords looks like shit too but it rides like it has no miles on it because the struts are in good shape.
>>
>>28908061
My brother in law who's a mechanic says KYB struts and shocks are a good choice. Saw them going for ~$550ish so probably go with those. Wanted to get skunk2 because i wanted to larp as a sleeper driver (and my fursona is a skunk) but too much for whats my daily/workcar
>>
>>28908068
Yeah KYB is pretty much the aftermarket OEM equivelant replacement for Hondas for that kind of money, I run Duralast ones and they've done the job for almost 6 years now.
>>
>>28908071
Based, gonna go with those then. When i get my new suspension put in I want to change the gear oil and do a radiator flush as well. Probably dont need new gear oil (replaced it 15-20k miles ago) but eh why not.

The radiator is new, I charged the ac thinking the worst that could happen is the refrigerant would leak after a bit, but the ac fan wasn't working and my og radiator overheated and blew up, causing my head gasket to shit out too. Got a new radiator and took the turd wagon to a specialist to get a new head gasket. Dude put in a new water pump, engine mounts, timing belt (or chain don't remember atm), and fixed an exhaust leak. 3.4k later she runs good, I think about getting the ac replaced because I live in humid ass south Texas but I'm too scared that it might fail, so I'm not fucking with it.

>>28908934
Based 1.5T, I wonder if beating the shit out of an engine is the secret to no problems, my engine is the most abused motherfucker and apart from a huge oil leak, it doesn't smoke or consume oil, meanwhile I've seen two elements with the same K24A4 that literally blow a huge oil cloud when they take off because the engine is so fucked.
>>
>>28908934
Blasting the pedal when it's warmed up is the key

>>
>>28908995
>driving it for 3 minutes at a time to get starbucks
Kek literally my car for 22 years straight, my oil doesn't dilute but you can smell the hydrocarbons from how rich an inefficient it is, I couldn't imagine trying to do a full 7500-10000 mile intervals like people are thinking they've getting away with, the CM will go like 2500 miles or 3 months on oil because I'm abusing it.

That must be the trick I let it warm up. In fact when you first started it's in this like mode where it won't let you do anything really until it warms up.

So I just let it go through its warm-up mode so I'm not a slug out on the street

11th gen Si uses the L15CA, same engine just with a different cylinder head/turbo (twinscroll), exhaust side VTEC, and slightly larger rod journals. Other than that they're pretty much identical. The twinscroll heads spool the turbo faster but they're not as capable of making power vs the single port heads.

This, Honda Accords are already enough trouble with the suspension work and whatever else it needs due to used car, the most unwise thing to do is get involved with a car that has body parts and the suspension missing due to being stolen, you really shouldn't even be driving a 2023 Accord if all you can afford is a salvage piece of shit, get the nicest example of a car that you can afford to buy clean title and not fucked up.

Today is a sad day for me, the clutch(im a wrenchlet so i just assume) gave out on my 06 cl7 accord
when i started to let off the clutch there was a bang and now its just a rattling metal sound in every gear and also in neutral
175k km and the clutch and transmission has never been touched
>>
>>28911852
I wonder if the throwout bearing is messed up or something, either way it's a transmission out job and clutch
>>
>>28911863
clutch pedal is nice and firm, i can throw the gears around theres a loud thunk sound when i put it in tho.
when i let off the clutch pedal theres a knocking sound both while in gear or neutral and the car moves nowhere

im thinking about flywheel, pressure plate so a whole clutch kit replacement and i hope my transmission is safe and sound

>>
>>28913534
Tragic, if you're gonna cheapen out on the suspension, at least give us a new engine that doesn't need a stupid timing belt water pump job, at least in 2006 when you got a Mcnugget suspension, you had the superior R18 and much better looking and built car overall, and an Si that revved to the moon.

>fixed? for a w hile
>still will at random do single click on key turn, turn again start
>like an hour ago did first turn start
>leaving 30 minutes later
>turned like 6 times, nothing, last time started
I haven't checked the battery voltage so I can't rule that or the alternator out but what else could it be, it has like 75000 miles. If it was the charging system would probably at least see slow starts, not just click and nothing, especially since is starts up fine after.
Would the starter cause it, intermittent fault or something?
>>
>>28913569
I think your starter needs replacing Anon, they can intermittently either not work, or make noise.
>>
>>28913569
I second this >>28913578 I had a similar issue on my 08 V6 and I replaced the starter and it would go first time after that. Starters essentially can get stuck off the proper gear positioning when they aren't functioning at full capacity. So that would explain why sometimes it was working fine and others not.

>switch Civic to mcdonalds
>keep Accord/TSX with front double wishbones and it's probably the best generation ever and has the racing pedigree of the Civics of old

What did they mean by this?

The original radiator in the CL finally let go last week. Had to deal with AutoZone rape because I was too confidant but still not bad at $188. 277k miles is absolutely godly for a radiator lifespan. Must be because it spend most of its time in NY and Ohio while rotting out its rockers under the side skirts. The deep south is rough on cooling systems. I swapped it to distilled water and Rislone Super Coolant additive for maximum cooling for the upcoming summer.
>>
>>28914210
>277k miles is absolutely godly for a radiator lifespan
I don't know what Honda put in the CM/CL radiators, but they all lived amazingly long, mine is a late 03 build date and I only replaced the rad in Feb 2024 due to the blue crusties forming, it wasn't even super soaker leak status or anything that would cause an overheat even after all the abuse and short trips which would heat cycle the thing a million times, I'm thinking Honda's switch to that blue coolant around the time K series was new is what made them all last so long, even my water pump was fine and not leaking, these are literally the best Hondas ever built.

>>
>>28915070
If it's cheap enough, I'd rather have a used oem axle than an aftermarket one that may or may not have vibration, otherwise get oem if you can, there are good aftermarket parts out there, but there's no guarantees of anything, especially if you're paying to have it done yoy don't want a comeback.
>>
>>28915085
Put an engine and tranny in the hatch driving the rear wheels, MR civic would be neat
>>
What's /hg/'s opinion of AP1 vs. AP2? I've been looking for a non clapped s2k to add to the garage with my FL5. I'm afraid the prices will go even more insane than they are, when I bought a FK8 in '18 for $35k you could still find clean NSXs in the $40ks. I regret not doing that now as those are $120k cars, and I've always wanted a S2k so I wanna find one before they get even rarer.
>>
>>28915477
Depends on how much you like torque, I prefer the bigger 2.2L, but it doesn't rev to 9 grand like the old AP1, that thing is a straight up classic Honda.
