anyone else really hate when there's no temp gauge in something you're driving? how am i supposed to know the engine isn't about to blow? i prefer not having a tacho than not having a temp gauge - without a tacho at least you can get by with listening to engine sound, but if there's no temp gauge the only alternative indicator is smoke or flames

My fan kicks on at 190f and then I hear it turn off 2 minutes later when the coolant is at 180f. But, yes in general I hate not having a coolant temp sensor, although they can be next to useless depending on where it is in the system. I'd prefer head temp.

Depends on the car, I have a based Honda so the needle moves over the half when the coolant is hot in extreme conditions but not boiling over status which is actually when you are gonna overheat since boiling coolant can't move any more heat from the motor because it's boiling.

My scooter has no tempurature gague which is annoying since it is forced air cooled. It has an ambient temperature display though as if I can't feel that on my own skin. The only way to see the engine temperature is to plug a scanner into it and read the ecu. Now that I think about it, would a tuner shop or some tech guru be able to switch that ambient display to engine tempurature?

i used to be a race car mechanic, one of the things we did was to install a big red light that went off if oil pressure, engine temp and whats not went off.
you dont have to worry about that while driving, if its not lit then keep on driving.
if it gets lit, is risking your engine worth winning a season?

tuner shop? unlikely. tech guru? sure.
that screen is most likely hardcoded to read ambient temp only, but if it reads any info from the ecu it can be reprogrammed to read the info you actually want. not a simple task, though - you'd have to dump the ecu program and study to see how it works and what values you need to change.

I had a little chinky obd2 hud thing that would show coolant temp and you could have it start bleeping when a certain temperature threshold was hit. I had mine beep when coolant was 210'f to let me know to ease up.
