well, I use the center diff lock a bunch, basically just flip it on for any dirt road or low speed driving in rain/snow and it keeps the rear wheels hooked up which is nice
and it drives itself on the highway while letting you have your hands in your lap as long as you tug on it periodically
I think the newer ones have a capacitative sensor instead that MAKES you keep hands on wheel at all times but I don't know for sure what the settings are for that newer tech
it has skid plates (I think equinox/terrain twins offer skids in the AT4 trim, and subaru has them on some models, but not 100% sure)
I flip on the 360 camera when pulling out of tight spaces or for 3 point turns and it actually will turn on on its own at low speeds on steep ramps and if it detects an obstacle
koreans put a lot of effort into the programming of their software and it shows
the safety features are useful and not overly intrusive
I do dream I had a turbo but this is probably more reliable, could use 20 more hp for passing though
>>
>>28954675
>center diff
>adaptive cruise control
>360 camera
>safety features (guessing you mean lane keeping, auto braking, etc.)
half of this stuff is federally mandated equipment that's in every single car being produced today
>>
>>
>>28954676
lol none of that is federally mandated
and you can have adaptive crooz that doesn't steer itself or let you drive hands free without making you stare at the road (my car doesn't have a compliance camera thank god)
>>
>>28954675
Sounds like a real piece of shit.
I'm struggling to imagine a car that can't traverse that road even when mildly moist.
Driver aids are AIDS.
Cool pic, but none of that is remotely impressive. It sounds like any cheap modern car, but with a center diff lock up to 25mph. It sounds like any normal modern shitbox.
>>
>>28954710
the worst part was where it was muddy and there were ruts
I guess I now grasp how gravel roads are better than pure dirt ones if it rains
I have AT tires but I think you need RT/MT tires if you deal regularly in thick mud.
The interior is much nicer than a Toyota, and it has more feature content than a Honda. Hondas are much more basic. Nissan has a nicer interior, but the software and platform are both ancient.

>>
>>
>>
>>28954741
I'm kind of surprised that it will hold to redline in manual mode or even in automatic if you floor it, I have it in "smart" mode and it does learn to hold lower gears with time
tbqh it needs more torque, low end, not a transfer case, would be nice with a diesel
>>
>>
>>28954749
I'm thankful to drive an automatic, but, realistically, any car is a manual on rough/winding roads if you don't have gobs of torque because you have to keep it in the power band and the auto programming tries to shift it into top gear even at 50 mph
I bet my Kia has a way smoother ride and better handling than your trugg
its perfectly competent, just numb
>>
>>
>>
>>28954763
honestly I wish the transmission programming were better
there's so little torque from an NA 4-banger that you have to shift it manually on all but the straightest, flattest roads, and I do a lot of driving in the mountains so I feel other cars in the same price range would be equally shitty, but wonderful to be able to set it and forget it otherwise and not have to use my fucking foot to shift
I broke my left leg last winter. I would have been stranded if I had to modulate a clutch pedal.

its not a decorative bumper if you go to the website and look up the x-pro prestige trim it mentions skid plates and if you go to the "we tested the sportage x-pro off road" video on youtube you can see them when the camera shows under the vehicle
>>
>>
>>28954949
>its not a decorative bumper if you go to the website and look up the x-pro prestige trim it mentions skid plates
You mean the "front and rear skid plates" which is a fancy way to say decorative bumper?
Also, the video you mention but did not bother posting a link to just shows a car doing car stuff. Oh no, a dirt road. So technical. Such cliffhanger. Only at one point can you get a quick glimpse at the underside which is missing any sort of protective plate. You'd know this if you watched it.
>>
>>
>>28956314
>they are not decorative
I agree with your sense of style, those decorative bumpers do not accentuate the looks of that car. However, they also don't protect the oil pan, transmission, or gas tank since they are just front and rear bumpers. Actual skid plates cover more than what the bumper already covers.
>>
>>28956403
I fucked up the oil pan on my last car (on rough roads), and specifically got a car with skids to avoid that happening again. I guess if I don't fuck up the differential, steering rack, oil pan, or other parts with this one, I win and you have to retract your claims?
I made a point of looking under the car to make sure it was skidded out before getting it.
>>
>>
>>28954632
I don't want to stir shit with you personally, but this car has one of the worst fucking windshields I've ever encountered.
It's so thin that it's nearly impossible to keep it clear on a highway during winter.
It'll freeze up while you drive, even with the heater on full blast.
Ridiculous.
>>
>>28956490
havent had this issue + my car has wires in the windshield so it cannot ice up
i drove it in a blizzard and the sensors fucked up and it wouldn't let me use cruise control at all, but i could still see out the windshield. I have had cars where it felt like the windshields fogged up all the time and this doesn't do that.

frankly its more annoying than helpful unless you live in a really cold climate cuz the wires slightly obstruct your vision but you do get used to them mostly
I broke my ankle at the start of winter and didn't get out much this winter, but I imagine it would be more useful if I did travel around in winter.
I will say the heating/defrosting functions are SO much more efficient than they were on older vehicles I drove 20 years ago
you don't really need to use remote start cuz it cools/heats up so fast anyways

>>28957565
I dunno I've never had a car before with it either. It comes on the "prestige package"
I think the other features are the blind spot monitor which projects the side camera view when you activate your turn signal, I think it also includes rear automatic braking, the heated windscreen, maybe solar control glass, and the skidplates, but mainly got it for the skids

Pic related is the "rear skid plate", it attaches to the bottom part of the bumper.
Front one kind of covers the radiator.

You don't say
How insightful of you.
Wait, it takes a jack to see the underside? Such offroad. Much clearance.
>>
>>28954632
One time I parked off a path just like that in my Rav4 and one wheel sunk into the dirt and I was stuck for hours digging it out. No matter how hard I floored it the thing would not move, I probably nearly blew out the engine or trans.
Crossovers are not for offroad, keep them on the path.
>>
>>28959976
I could only believe this happened to a hybrid with the cvt trans, those are notoriously bad offroad. I don't believe that there is a crossover on the market that offers AWD that can't get moving after losing traction to a single wheel.
Then there is the tire issue. LIke yeah you are not going to have fun if you go play in the mud in your quiet and economical summer tires.
>>
File: mykia6.jpg (2.6 MB)
>>28959834
I saw it next to a trugg (tundra) in a parking area yesterday. It got giga-mogged, way narrower, way lower to the ground, way shorter. But, some of the roads in the woods are super narrow so that's necessarily a bad thing.
I had my first skid today. I was going 30mph ish on a muddy downhill (steep) dirt road and the car lost control for a few seconds, had to countersteer in one direction, then the other, and then it came back. This is with AWD lock on, and all terrain tires (which are not great for mud, that's why they make rugged terrain and mud terrain tires I suppose) - it rained a bunch in the last few days
I mean I think in that situation a rear locker would have helped but AWD is certainly better than nothing. I've never really felt the traction or stability control do its thing and never had the light flash for that in the dash (my old jetta it used to cut power all the time), and only had the ABS engage once in heavy rain when I forgot to pump.
>>28959976
was it 4wd? what tires?
tires matter too, I wouldn't do this on normie tires
>>28960267
do you think you get more grip in the mud if you lower the pressure in the tires? I just haven't worked out how to do that, I'm not mechanically inclined, and it seems like a hassle.
Most people here have jeeps and trucks but there's plenty of Nissan Rogue's and shitbox sedans too.
It was coming downhill from pic related that I skidded. It was like that video where the E36 goes down a hill but I tried to minimally correct the steering. It was scary as hell but I've been traveling for a year and a bit now and not skidded before.
If you had tried what I did today on summer tires I think you just would have died unless you did the whole thing at 10-15 mph.
>>
>>28960267
Nope it was a 2015, newish model back when it happened. Standard automatic AWD.
>>28960487
AWD honey, not the same as 4wd. Decently treaded tires, I'd always get deep treaded ones. It literally just didn't do well once it was off a packed path. It wasn't so much that it dug itself in, the engine just couldn't spin the tires that had traction. I would floor it with no wheels moving, or slight movement that would just dig me deeper.
It was great in snow, absolutely shit offroad. Could only handle paths if they weren't wet or loose dirt.
>>
>>28960605
>I'd always get deep treaded ones.
it's a balance cuz I do a lot of highway miles too
I could have mud terrains and ez pz through dirt roads that are wet but they would be shitty on the highway.
Honestly it does fine on rough roads. I'm more of a pussy than it is, but I obviously concede it's not gonna do as well as a truck with 4wd and a locker, but it's also much less crude than that the rest of the time
this is also exceptionally rainy
I could have gone around and taken a paved road back - next time I will know to do that

In Sweden we drive 70s/80s/90s FWD cars in this type of places normally and at winter. I never understood what is this American obsession to have 4x4 AWD super military SUV trucks with monster wheels and then drive on a normal level dirt road and when it is winter, slide into a tree or pile of cars.
>>
>>28962936
Do you have mud in sweden? It has been rainier than usual here and there's some mud on the dirt roads, the ones that don't have gravel over them, and I found myself losing traction even going 15 mph with AWD lock on today, just because of how thick the mud was. I have a feeling if I had rugged or mud terrain tires it would be less of an issue, but it's already a bit dicey passing on the highway with these all terrain tires at 80 mph or more.
I grew up with two 80s volvos, a 240 sedan and a 740 wagon.
> I never understood what is this American obsession to have 4x4 AWD super military SUV trucks with monster wheels
maybe y'all are really good at driving or don't have narrow steep roads. Doesn't take much to slide off a road when it is wet/muddy/snowy/icy and they don't even throw down cinders here in the winter on most roads.

I turned around at this point. Maybe you could do it if you had mud tires, but all terrains don't like thick mud. They don't really like mud at all which is weird cuz they are great in the rain and snow. Would have only been another .5 mi to the view from here, but I wussied out and turned around.

>>
>>
>>28964612
>I turned around at this point. Maybe you could do it if you had mud tires, but all terrains don't like thick mud.
Tires have nothing to do with it. You're a pussy-ass city boy afraid of a little mud and think a gravel path is "off-roading". Mud like that is nothing to shy away from, hell it's practically a 'civilized' road in some parts of the world.
>Would have only been another .5 mi to the view from here
So why not walk it city boy. Oh right, fat, lazy and conditioned to be afraid of a little dirt.

>>
>>28965343
well, I was alone and if I got stuck in the mud nobody's gonna get me out of there for a while
I think it's more an issue of all terrain tires not being optimized for mud and you actually needing mud terrain tires for this sort of thing + having 29 inch tires that are kinda short and needing a bit more ground clearance if not a rear locker for such thicc mud

The biggest appeal of Kia is all the features and safety stuff you get on the fully loaded versions. A stripper model defeats the purpose.

They aren't all painted red, it's just that they self ignite because of bad design. They actually come in more than one color. You are mistaking cars engulfed in flames with cars being painted red. Easy mistake to make with that brand. I saw one the other day that wasn't on fire. Totally bought a lottery ticket afterwards, won $5.

>>28968161
ok well I'm not that guy
my kia was already breaking traction mildly on the less muddy sections before this only going 15 mph and the steering is so numb it's not fun to wrangle it and if I'd gotten stuck I'd be screwed, in the middle of nowhere.
it had rained a fair bit the week prior
i'll just come back when it has been bone dry and my legs are less sore and walk the final stretch like the others did or go up from the bottom, I saw where the parking was and you get waterfalls and remnants of an old bucket tramway if you go that way
I've only driven it in mud a few times and it's not confidence inspiring, but maybe that's just how mud is and you need more serious tires and a locker to conquer it

The AWD system doesn't seem that confident. There's no transparency to its action and it was slipping at 15mph - not a lot, but once or twice despite me trying to take good lines. It also broke traction the day before going on a steep muddy downhill but not exactly in thick mud. And the steering has no feel so it's hard to trace specific lines when you need a narrow path.
