Questions that don't deserve their own thread. No stupid questions edition. Unless you're OP.

Why can't I get a Haynes manual for cars newer than 2014ish? I'm considering a new car since mine has finally exhausted the last of my patience.

So I have my late dad 2010 V-rod muscle that only has 1200 km mileage on it
he got cancer right after buying it so he never ride it much
but neither do I or my brother cause its a pain in the ass to ride
so we thought about trading in it for other bikes
used Panam are super cheap these days so I wonder maybe if thats a good option, i know about the early panam having problem so im thinking of maybe trade it for 24 panam or wait couple more years for 25/26 panam instead
people on my shithole country dont care for vrod so its hard to get any premium value out of low mileage rod here

>So I have my late dad 2010 V-rod muscle that only has 1200 km mileage on it
Dude. That's amazing. It's the Muscle version, too. It's got a Porsche watercooled engine, when HD was still hanging to aircooled. That is one hell of a bike. I think you could like it if you got used to it, but if not, they're valuable, especially with that low of mileage.
>people on my shithole country dont care for vrod so its hard to get any premium value out of low mileage rod here
That's wild.

It's a better bike than Harley have ever made since.

Am I considering all the options? I drive 80 miles 6 days a week just for work, getting killed on gas. Looking at plug in hybrids, but I don't know how well they've figured out winter. A prius phev gets 128mpge, what's the downside beyond a little extra cost?

Bought a Taurus Interceptor off a buddy for next to nothing, knowing it had a bad valve. Before I bought it I stuck a bore scope in it, I knew it had some scoring in the cylinder with the bad valve. After opening it up I realized it's pretty severe, you can catch your nail in some of the scratches. Should I cut my losses and scrap it, or throw a valve in it and slam it together cheap as possible and send it?

I have a BMW with an automatic transmission. If I barely give it gas while it's upshifting from 1st to 2nd I can hear a noise coming from the back that's hard to explain. The car shifts smooth. Can't feel anything. But I hear it with the top down. Anything it could be besides a failing transmission?
>>
>>28957093
I'd just sell it, let the next retard in line deal with it kek

My feem was recently quoted
>$1750 for 2 new lower control arms plus wheel alignment
>$700 for 2 new ball joints
>$500 for a new skid plate
After she drove her car into a snowbank a month or so back.
are these prices completely insane or is it just me? Seems like $500 in parts and maybe 6 hours of labor all in probably less. 2014 camry hybrid.

Your post isn’t really clear about what is parts vs labor being quoted, or whether there is damage to a subframe needing repair. It does seem your “feem” whatever that is about to get screwed. Pic related is the lower control arms including new ball joints from RockAuto.com
>>
>>28957161
I mean...
>drive 80 miles per day 6 days a week
I get 27mpg in my car, 17 gallons a week at, being generous, $4.5/gal is $80 a week on gas. A prius phev has an equivalent of 128mpg, so $16 a week. My car payment wouldnt change at all really.

retard question inbound
so I want to start doing basic maintenance stuff, and the next thing on the list is tire rotation
I know I have to leave one corner in the air while I'm rotating, which means a jack stand
my retard question is: how do I set up a jack stand when my jack is using the jack point already?
do I jack up next to it and put the stand at the jack point?
I have a Colorado so I know I have a solid frame, what parts are okay to jack on and what should I avoid?
I would ask my dad, but I didn't have enough interest in vehicles while he was alive to learn from him
>>
>>28957340
Since you have body on frame construction you have all kinds of options, you can jack and jack stand anywhere on the frame that is not causing things to become unbalanced. I’m not sure what you mean by one corner in the air? If I were doing a one side at a time only tire rotation, I would put the jack dead center of the flat part of the frame, and then put the stands near the front and rear of the flat parts of the frame(commonly the jack points). If doing a multi side rotation I would do the same, but have the truck on 4 jack stands at each jack point. Always lower most if not all of the vehicle weight on the jack stands and insure everything is stable, you want the stands holding up the vehicle not the jack. Some faggot will be along shortly to say you can only jack a manufacturer specified jack points, but they are autistic retards. I’ve been doing it for 30 years.
>>
>>28957340
I will add on more thing that is problem for me on my leveled f150, that likely won’t be a problem for you. My jack stands do not go high enough to keep my tires from touching the ground when placed on the frame. I jack my truck up on the frame and then place stands under the front control arms, and rear axle housing tubes. This allows the suspension to not droop and letting the tires have pressure to the ground. This adds to your question of where can you put jack stands. Be careful to make sure your jack and stands are not placed anywhere that can crush a brake line, wires, grease fittings, etc.
>>
>>28957363
>I’m not sure what you mean by one corner in the air?
my idea was to jack one corner and put the jack stand, then use my jack at the corners as I work around the truck doing the rotation
>>
>>28957383
That’s perfectly reasonable, but the jack and the jack stand are always fighting for the optimal position. I think you should end up with the jack stands in the optimal position. You have a lot of options for jacking with a full frame, just make sure you’re not crushing a sensitive component. Also, in every step of jacking be paying attention to your stands and make sure they’re not tipping/lifting a foot up or changing position on where you placed them on the vehicle. This is not complicated, but if you act like an unobservant monkey shit can fall off and over.
>>
>>28957205
They didnt include a breakdown in the estimate. Noted, i said $1750, in fact its $1600 for both control arms and $120 to realign the wheels
I guess control arms are labor intensive, like maybe a few hours each. But even so the price seems crazy.

The $120 alignment is not crazy. The mechanic shop charging a thing called LIST PRICE for parts is absolutely normal, meaning they charge you 100% more for the parts than they cost them. The Moog parts I showed you in the pic are of a name brand non-oe, and at least historically very high quality replacement parts. I don’t find this repair to be that laborious. I think it should take a mechanic at most an hour per control arm. Now let’s do some generous math

Control arm cost to customer LIST PRICE: $200
2 hours of labor per side at $150 per hour $600
Total price without fuck fees and taxes $800

If everything you have told me is accurate the mechanic you have chosen is charging double what it should cost at least. You have a crooked mechanic. I challenge you most to start doing your own repairs. If that’s not going to happen you need to find the most expensive(perceived as expensive, but actually honest) mechanic shop around, they will end up being the cheapest. To find the most expensive mechanic who will also work on 10+ year old average cars you need to find a car enthusiast shop. Look for a private mechanic shop(not a chain corporation) that is not a total shithole and works on classic cars(cars from the 1960’s or older). The classic cars will be in the parking lot.

How do i get these lock nuts off anons? I've been trying to hammer a socket on but it just breaks loose once i get the impact gun on it.
>>
>>28957158
Yes that is insane. OEM arms are $150 apiece and the ball joints are $60. If you’re doing control arms, ball joint is an additional 5 minutes of labor. They are jewwing you extremely hard. The front lower control arms aren’t even that difficult on that car, just annoying that’s it’s FWD so you may need to deal with the axle
>>
>>28957391
one last question
I've seen people say that you can jack up the rear on the differential, but also that you can damage the cover doing that
am I right in assuming that the concern is positioning the jack incorrectly so that it's pressing on the lip where the cover and diff mate?
>>
>>28957550
You want the puck to be under the bigger part of the diff. If the first point of contact is the cover, yea, you’re gonna have a problem.

auto transmissions usually don't make noise when failing, they usually start slipping or shifting badly (hesitating, not shifting, not downshifting, stalling, etc). you didn't describe the noise at all so we can't really help you, but it sounds more like something like a rear end problem, a bad mount, loose exhaust, etc.
>>
>>28957158
stop going to the dealer, they are scammers, overcharge by 3-4x, and do piss poor guatemalan tire shop tier work.
>>
>>28957340
put into youtube "car model put on jackstands" you will find a tutorial specific to your car's jacking points. if you can't find one, enter a sister model built on the same platform, it will be the same.
>>
>>28957500
they make a set of locking nut removers that you pound on then use an impact to remove.
you can also try a slightly smaller socket than the one that keeps breaking loose. go to slightly smaller SAE if metric etc.
if you get completely stuck you might have to weld a nut or a bolt onto the end of it, just protect your wheel well with thick layered aluminum foil first so it doesnt get splattered

Any ausfags know if its legal to install a blowoff valve block off plate?
>>
>>28957996
Think I’m going swap valves from another cylinder and torque the head back on and do a leak down test and see how bad it is. Also thinking about dropping the pan so I can remove that cylinder’s piston and give it a quick and dirty ball hone. Either way I’m not going to keep this thing in the end.

Related, I'm trying to get my car registered but it had a BOV and pod filter when I got it. Both illegal.
Its an imported car and the parts are impossible to get my hands on, even for an unreasonable price.
So I'm thinking I'll just slap a block off place in there (just to get the car registered, then the BOV will go back on, it's pretty sweet) and one of these filters www.amazon.com.au/Universal-Carbon-Filter-Enclosed-Induction/dp/B0FBR8GFHB/
It should be legal because it's enclosed.
Please tell me if I'm a stupid nigger.

>coombait for attention
I guess it worked. You have two options, either learn to DIY, or learn the actual rates/prices of operations and components. Information is the answer you're looking for. Even if you don't wanna DIY, look up how it's done on YT, check the prices for all the parts of your car, and overall be informed. You won't avoid the occasional fuck up from a mechanic but your wallet will thank you

I started doing my own repairs because I got quoted $400 to do one control arm, and had already bought a Haynes manual and saw how simple it was. $1600 for two is blatant robbery. Sometimes they can be hard to remove, but it's three fuckin bolts on most cars.

Hello fellas, long time no meet. Car wrenching season is upon us so here I am again.

>>
>>28957682
Arms should be 150-300 depending on the car type
Spark plugs are 20 bucks for 4
Four wheel alignment is anywhere between 30 and 50 bucks usually
Ball joints are 100-200
Skid plate is 30-100 depending on car
Headlight restoration (not alignment) is a scam most of the times but should cost 100-150

Add to that 2-4 hours of labor depending on the mechanic. Heck some people here could do it in 1h

i have a fitment question.
i've removed the (failed) aftermarket cat from my car and am preparing to put in a (tested) genuine cat in its place. but the potential problem i'm seeing is that the exhaust-end of the cat has bolts already. i know from experience that the header/manifold-end can be a bit of a squeeze to get the cat on because of space limitations (big brace bar is partly in the way) but i fear that the bolts on the other end will then get in the way of installing the exhaust-end of the cat.
which end should i install first?
the threads on the bolts btw are OK, i don't want to drill them out either, i just spent several hours drilling out a seized bolt on a bracket i don't need.
>>
>>28958999
yes, do it today. if it's that overdue, drop the pan, replace the filter, and clean the magnet, don't do just some kind of fluid only flush.
>>
>>28959059
you will want to remove everything to the rear of the cat so it's not in the way, then install the cat, then put the rest of the exhaust back on.
if you can find your car's service manual, it will likely give you the factory recommended sequence as well.
>>
>>28956628
>Why can't I get a Haynes manual for cars newer than 2014ish
because of youtube, normalfags stopped buying service manuals. in the old days (and i'm old) the first thing you did when you got a new shitbox is go down to the auto parts store and pick up a haynes or chilton manual. today you can just put the job into youtube and find 12 different videos of it being broken down step by step.
also as cars get more complex, there's no way to fit all the procedures, data tables, and wiring manuals that would be needed into a paperback book without making them really long.
so basically sales started collapsing as the books started becoming more expensive to make = no more hardcopy service manuals being made.
it's a shame because I prefer them. i still have one for each of my cars as my cars are all older. it's much faster quickly looking up a torque spec, or flipping through to verify whether or not something has to come out to do a job without trying to scrub through a 80 minute youtube vid, but here we are

truly difficult. feel like ND is the best, but I would literally die in an accident. brz seems fun as long as the suspension isn't too stiff. Z seems comfy and sharp but twin turbo reliability gives me concerns. $40k for ~10k mileage with performance pack (LSD). GT mustangs are $40k for ~50k mileage examples but probably ride super well + magneride but are probably less fun than the other examples and will get me speeding tickets I Imagine. but the most livable.

2008 Cadillac CTS, got it from my dad (RIP)

However, I get
>service stabilitrak

best case scenario- when the battery got low from sitting for so long, the ABS module threw a 'low voltage' code, which is why all the lights and warning messages turned on

any generic code reader that can also read ABS should be able to clear it. RIP dad
>>
>>28959749
its all a gamble no matter the price or where you buy it from

Is it a rough idle or is it shaking like the engine is knocking about? If it's a rough idle, check your fuel system and your mass airflow sensor. That just killed my Mercedes again.
>>
>>28962712
read codes, read O2 sensor values, ECT sensor values, MAF sensor values, and most importantly fuel trim. you need to do a proper diagnostic to find out why your engine is running poorly.

Another question, should I get new bushings or caliper pins? Any way to tell? Feels like I’m driving with a stick caliper on that side because it grinds even when I don’t have my foot on the brake. Once I get the wheel off I won’t be able to drive to the store after lol
>>
>>28963259
bushings should be built into the caliper unless we're talking about different things and don't generally need to be replaced.
slide pins rarely need to be replaced, usually only if your seals get damaged and moisture gets in and they rust. if you genuinely can't get to your FLAPS during the repair, just buy them before hand and return them if you end up not needing them, get the seals too. if they look OK don't waste your money.

is it only when your foot is on the gas but stops the second you take your foot off? high pitched whine? sounds like damaged gears in your differential.

Do those free OBD scans from autozone etc also check for ABS codes? My bt obd dongle and app don’t show them even though I’m geting lights on my dash. Pretty sure it’s a ABS wheel sensor failure but I can’t replace it if I don’t know which wheel is the culprit

That’s how I drive but I’ve been in the car with others and…some shift into it when moving veeeery slowly. I’m not a fan of it. It has synchros but my car doesn’t like it most of the time and you should double clutch if you do it…
If you’re in a weird spot where youre slightly moving and 2nd will lug your engine and you need to floor it, I would downshift quickly and step on it but I wouldn’t make a habit of it.

Online, for alternator testing, they say that a value below 13.5V while engine is idle is low.

I read 13.55V which indicates that I should replace mine, which makes sense because my car is a 2016 model.

But I also found out that my alternator is "adaptive" meaning the output depends on battery charge. So should I replace my alternator or not?
>>
>>28966510
It's way heavier and way more expensive than aluminum
>>
>>28966515
Is there a reason you think the alternator is bad? According to the dash display on my car, the charging system hovers around 12.8V after the battery is recharged from starting. It's around 14.1V until then. 13.5V could definitely be normal depending on how the alternator's regulated and it's definitely in the float range for the battery.

To know for sure you can have the alternator load tested, I think even Autozones offer the service for free.

I recently read somewhere that the cheapest new vehicle you could buy was about $25,000 or so. I also recently saw an article talking about how a consistent trend in buying right now is every customer across all wealth levels, is cheap and value buys. So my question is this:

>>

>>
>>28966644
To comply with safety regulations you need airbags everywhere plus parking sensors, rear camera, blind spot monitoring, frontal collision detection and automatic braking, lane keeping, driver fatigue monitoring. And for emissions regulations you need a hybrid drivetrain or a very optimized turbocharged engine at minimum. All that costs money, all the "folk's wagons" of the past were made out of a cheap tiny gutless engine with the absolute barest minimum around it to legally qualify as a car, even if automakers could legally make one of those again nobody would buy it as they lacked even the most basic comforts we've come to expect out of a passenger vehicle.
>>
>>28966800
You can't mount tires to new wheels. Have a tire shop do that.
The bead has to be popped on and it's a nightmare for regular joe.

If you mean just changing them, yeah. Tighten them, put the car down, then torque.
>>
>>28966523
>Is there a reason you think the alternator is bad
Because it has been 10years and they have about 10years lifespan
And also because my car flickered 3 times in the last few weeks. As in everything goes out then comes back, headlights, infotainment, system malfunctions, etc.
I dont drive my car often but Ive read that alternator faillure can be catastrophic, the car might need to be towed etc
so I would rather replace everthing on my terms before it comes to that
>>
>>28967045
I’ve read both of your posts. Your flickering you experienced most likely wouldn’t be you alternator, more likely is bad connection at your battery, or failing battery cable. All of my 3 cars alternators are original, and between 11-16 years old. I personally don’t think your alternator is bad, and I wouldn’t replace it. As far as an alternator failure being catastrophic, this is just silly. The only ways I could think it would be catastrophic is if you don’t wrench, or you have a car with an incredibly hard to access alternator. At worst you need a ride to a parts store, and to get jumped off. I have changed more than one alternator on the side of the road.
>>
>>28967076
Thanks. Last time I got this flickering, it was my battery that needed replacing. I just checked and that was 6 years ago.

I'm going to replace my battery myself then get the alternator tested by a pro.

>>
what's the maximum time you should have between oil changes? i just noticed it's been 6mo but not even driven 3k
>>
>>28967188
In general I don’t think about it. You shouldn’t have to dismount anything to inspect them though. This first part I’m telling you is important, and I think what your picture is showing. The inboard pad always wears out first, so you have to inspect that one. On most cars you can crawl under with a flashlight and see how much pad material is left. Some pads have little metal tabs called wear sensors that begin squeaking when you’re not applying your brakes. I personally can just feel and hear something is wrong before the rotors get damaged.
>>
>>28967247
Maximum recommended interval is one year, regardless of how often you drive. Because oil quality gets degraded by moisture and contaminants and shit
If you drive alot then you should change it more often, although, here in europe, we dont.

The parking brake light is commonly used as a low brake fluid indicator light in addition to its primary duty of informing you that the parking brake is set.
Assuming all your issues are being earnestly reported by the car and not just some cascaded electrical issue that throws all of them, brake fluid needs to be addressed and should not be ignored.

I read there was 2 different versions of the Ford 302 in the 80s, the HO which had a firing order of 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 and the standard which has a firing order of 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.

The crankshafts are apparently interchangeable so why did Ford bother to make the firing orders different? The only things I could think of are perhaps one firing order is smoother or more economical than the other, but I don't exactly get how that would work.

the firing order of the older 302s was prone to vibration and rough acceleration, because having cylinder 1 and 5 fire in rapid succession put a lot of strain on cylinder 1’s main bearing

most old 302s, before 1981 i think, use the 1-5-x firing order, while 1982-1999 use the 1-3-x firing order, which is shared with the 351 windsor

allegedly they are interchangeable but you would need to rewire the distributor in addition to swapping the cam for the HO one

I just brought my Rav4 to a mechanic and I am dumbfounded at how incompetent they seem to me but it's very possible I am the incompetent one here. I brought it there because I was hearing sand paper noise when the wheels were spinning, there was a high pitched howling noise when accelerating and because there is a clunking noise sometimes when turning from a stopped position.

They had NO IDEA what the clunking noise was and even said they experienced it when I picked it up. Said they tightened something.

For the howling noise they suggested changing a front CV axle but also charged me for a CV driveshaft and retainer. Mind you, this was a repair that didn't need to be done but I trusted their judgement. I asked them to check the differential fluid because in my investigation that is the closest sound to what I was hearing and from what I read it is a common issue on my model and year for the filter on the differential to get clogged and cause the seal to leak. They said they checked the fluid and it was dark and said it was too risky to change so they didn't recommend it, yet the recipe says that only for the transmission fluid. I asked them about this and they said the differential IS the transmission and uses transmission fluid. Everything I've found said this is just outright wrong.

For the sandpaper sound they originally told me something about emergency break lines but in the receipt they have it listed as rusty backing plates and quoted it in the thousands of dollars to replace.

Despite not fixing anything they said everything is safe for a 6000+ mile road trip I'm going on. Am I in the right for not trusting them and finding them completely incompetent? I have been searching for a trustworthy mechanic for so long and I am just so demoralized at this point

My diagnosis after the fact(I'm retarded)
>Howling noise - Rear differential issue, probably a front bearing replacement for the coupling. This is a known issue acknowledged by toyota - Tech service bulletin (T-SB-0080-13). But maybe could just be a leak? Not sure but I feel like a place that calls them a toyota specialist should've at least mentioned this instead of just replacing a front wheel wheel axle bearing and calling it a day.
>Clunking noise - from what I have read it's likely a worn upper mount bearing, maybe an underlubed steering intermediate shaft.
>Sand paper noise in the rear- Probably rusty backing plates, unsure of what that repair would actually entail. Would I need to replace the rotors? break pads? calipers? bearings? everything? No clue

Either way I feel like my mechanic was actually retarded and just found a random thing they could charge me for and basically said "fuck you" without even attempting to fix anything

Buy a used car first because you are likely to do something stupid regarding maintenance or driving and that will be a much less expensive mistake if you buy used than if you buy new.
Within the first month of buying my car I slid into a guardrail while driving during a blizzard. Smashed the bumper, cracked the windshield wiper fluid tank, broke the compressor. It would've been much more expensive if I had bought new than used.

I would also look for a car that is not only used, but as cheap and reliable as possible. Think of it as a tutorial for car ownership.

Unless you're a karen-style driver who stomps on the gas when the light turns green and then blasts up to the next red light in order to stomp on the brake, rotors are like every 15 years when they start to warp while pads are every couple years depending on what kind you buy. Changing rotors with every pad change is insane.

I have a 2006 Subaru Outback 2.5L 4 cylinder and I have been having a few electrical issues recently. When I'm driving it will end up kicking into limp mode. The instrument cluster will stop working and the radio will cut in and out. I have had the alternator tested and it was good. I bought a new battery which worked for a week before I had the same issue. The only code it has thrown is U1, which is for the Body Control Unit. I'm unsure if that is the problem or if replacing the wiring harness from the alternator would fix the issues.
>>
>>28971708
U1 doesn't sound like a complete code, getting the whole code might help pinpoint the problem. It could be anything from a failing BCU itself, to a broken wire or loose ground wire somewhere. Start with the code, figure out what criteria happens to set that code, then work backwards with a wiring diagram.
>>
>>28971708
>>28971713
will add it sounds like something is causing the CANBUS to not be able to communicate since you're having issues across multiple modules. possible it's in the BCM but it could be in anything that connects to the CANBUS.

That's the only code that has shown up and it was only one time, before I got the new battery. From what I can see with the ground wire from the battery everything is fine. It was actually ER IU, my apologies. Been a week since it popped up.

Is it safe to use one of these things, (diesel fuel pressure regulator) with only 2 of the 3 bolts in?

According to the ai chatbot, it is not, because on my model of truck the regulator is exposed to the full pressure of the rail, 26,000psi under load.
[but i dont trust robots]

(my dad was replacing it for me, but he used and undersized bit and stripped one of the bolts, then cut the bolt head off, leaving the shank in the hole so the bolt cant be replaced...)

Fluid film is better than krown/ziebart bullshit but imo cosmoline is better.

Fluid film washes off, swells rubber, and collects dirt making it a mess when you need to get underneath the car. Youll need to reapply annually or semi annually

Cosmoline doesnt wash off, doesnt collect much dirt (dries into a crayon like finish), and doesnt swell rubbers. You can also layer it on THICC over time. After a few layers you only need to touch up high traffic areas every year or so and it isnt a mess getting underneath the car unlike fluid film.

No one really promotes cosmoline online because there isnt any money in it. Other rust proofing services need to be refreshed annually making it a viable profitable service.
>>
>>28967180
6yrs is about time for a battery... While youre there, check the power and ground cables. Make sure theyre tight at the battery posts and to the car body. And make sure they have no signs of rats chewing on them or any nasty green corrosion. Also look for other ground cables around the engine bay and check them for tightness/signs of corrosion or being chewed on. Theyre usually beside the engine, near the strut towers, connected to the subframe, etc.

I agree with the other guy that power flickering isnt usually from a bad alternator. Also alternators often go past 10yrs. Especially japanese ones.

Good luck bro

cosmoline doesn't seem to keep moisture/salt from entering metal, only covers it up to make it harder to see until it gets bad.

i have one zuccbook story
> buy Mustang but decide not to trade in my old ford fusion because I wanted to not drive the mustang during the winter
> list my old car on marketplace in the spring, with trade offer in hand from dealership
> in good shape, no mechanical problems, waxed frequently, but it’s got 120k miles and shows it
> KBB price is $5250, trade in offer from dealer is $3750, so i figure I’d be happy to get anything above $4k
> list at $4500 (still good price)
> inundated with people saying “give me your best offer” or offering below trade
> got to the point where i would just respond “no” or send them a screenshot of the trade in offer
> at least two people persisted in offering below that even after i did that
> ended up selling it to a polite dad that bought it for his son for $4250
> $250 off asking when you have cash in hand and were polite is much more reasonable imo

there are people who solely want to get a deal and aren’t even necessarily in the market for what you’re selling. it costs nothing to lowball. if you added even a small cost to entry ($2 to inquire) i think a lot of these go away.

many (but not all) of these people will turn around and flip what you sold them at a profit. im sure these people message hundreds of listings a week and probably hit on at least one or two each week.

it was very annoying to deal with those idiots but it did make me feel good to know that kid was gonna have a decent first car

>Commute is only about 5 minutes to work and hardly anywhere else
I may catch flak for this, but if the "driving experience" isn't important and you just want something to get from A to B, then unironically think about getting an electric car. A life of 5 minute journeys isn't particularly healthy for ICE cars, and the mileage is so low that range shouldn't be an issue, so this is one of those few areas that an EV is virtually unmatched. The car will also spend the majority of it's time at home with little battery use, so you could get away with just plugging it into a normal household socket rather than investing in dedicated charger.

If an EV is sacrilege to you, though, then I wish you luck at the very least.

that being said, the Lexus also has a head start on all of the aging that compromises comfort and longevity. 10 years doesn't mean all of the rubber and plastic will already be brittle, but in another 10 it could start to happen. unless the Camry's built out of literal shit (not an expert there) it will probably take longer to start developing exciting new forms of NVH

Did I get myself scammed?

Over a year ago, I had to get my car checked out to fix a check engine light to get it smog checked.
They said my catalytic converter was going out, and to replace it would be somewhere between $5000-6000
I ended up just getting it cleaned up a bit, which helped just enough to get the light to turn off long enough to get it registered. It went back on a couple months later, and I mostly ignored it. (I was kind of tired of needing to get it into the repair shop all the time, and my work schedule makes it really hard to do so)

Anyway, about eight months ago, I needed to get it registered again, and of course, it really needs a new Catalytic Converter this time. I went to a different repair shop to get that done, and they quoted me the same price as last time. around $5800. I said yes and ate the cost after a few moments to think.
Just earlier, I was visiting my dad, and he said that I might have gotten scammed from that, and showed a few Amazon listings for compatible parts for a couple hundred dollars each.
Later on though, I checked oempartsonline.com, and the prices were around what I paid for them. (actually a lot more if they ever stop being on sale)

It's a 2012 car, so Warranty isn't really an issue. But my local mechanics say they only use OEM parts, and I doubt they'd just install one that I bought myself and hand over to them. I'm not a car guy, so I don't have the tools or experience to trust myself in replacing it on my own.

Regardless, that car is fucking dead now, so it doesn't really matter all that much, but I can't help but wonder. (Also, stay away from Jeeps. That thing had a new expensive issue every few months)

Never mind I'm retarded, it's the whole fucking bump stop that's gone

What the fuck. What car was this...? I assume a Jeep, but what model and engine specifically?

2012 Jeep Liberty. that price also included labor cost since if I remember right, they'd need to lift out the whole engine to replace it. Maybe that was a different thing though. Like I said, that thing was in and out of the mechanics every few months

If they only use OEM parts, then it sounds *plausible* when you tack labor on top on this. The cats are part of an entire section of exhaust, so that's where the cost comes from - Stellantis are arguably the rip off artists here. That being said, it would have been entirely possible to hack the OEM cats out of your exhaust and weld in a pair of aftermarkets for around a quarter of that original quote.

the fuck kind of manufacturer decides it's a good idea to weld a perishable rubber bumper to an axle?

You didn't get scammed, but you may have done a bit of stupid.
OEM catalytic converters are ridiculously overpriced because they have to comply with NY and California specs which are really stringent requiring an excessively expensive cat. If you live in any of the other 48 states you can install a cheaper aftermarket cat for a few hundred bucks.
If you're not a citizen of one of those commie shitholes you overpaid, but that was the actual price for what you got.

you can always find a mechanic who does.
There are mechanic who do it, Ive done it like once, bought a part off ebay directly from japan, tried to install it myself, it was too complicated, a local mechanic installed it for me. I still saved 1000€ compared to what the dealer quoted me

I think it's bolted in and has just falled out due to rust, but yeah, pretty retarded I need this part to properly attach the axle

Warped rotors can be turned or replaced. How do you propose that rust in areas that don't touch anything (the only areas that can sustain rust) would result in warped rotors?
