You can do stupid things and it'll be fine most of the time.

It's silly because you can relight a fire in the morning from coals that will remain hot for days.
And if you want heat throughout the night you can either use rocks to reflect it back at you or even heat the rocks up instead and use them.
You could argue the smoke keeps the bugs off but it's a bit of a reach, alternatives exist.

if you do a decent job building the firepit I see no reason why not. I still would only do it when it is absolutely needed
