Unless I'm planning on gutting an animal, why would I need more knife than this?

Real pros take 2, in case you lose one.

you don't need it, only a retard would say you "need" it

but do you -want- it?
do you want a mini saw blade, scissors, bottle / can opener, an awl, tweezers, etc?
if you want that but don't wanna carry a box will all that in it, then yeah, you use that

this is something that was learned back in the roman times, its not something to argue with, it simply -is-
>>
A full tang knife can be used for battoning, if you're into that kind of thing.

Is a Huntsman better than a Leatherman Wave?
>>
>>2869782
No clue, I only have the Huntsman, but I like it.
>>
>>2869782
Leatherman wave is absolutely a more versatile and robust tool but it's also twice as heavy and expensive
Pliers are nice, locking blade is nice.
But for the same cash you can get a pair of aluminum fishing pliers to go with your huntsman.
I'm more of a rebar nigga anyways
>>
>>2869791
I have a Wave but it's too bulky to be an EDC for me. I'll definitely pick up a Huntsman, they look like they'll fit on to my keychain and fit in my pocket nice.

True story.
>>
>>2869760
I remember when my dad needed to cut some cord and the scissors he got couldn't cut through it cleanly. I pulled out my SAK and he laughed, saying the small scissors wouldn't be any better, and cut through it like butter.
>>
>>2869797
Funny enough, the main blade, the tiny scissors, and the toothpick are the only pieces of mine that I've used.
>>
>>2869842
do you kiss your dad on the mouth?
>>
>>2869859
No. My dad is one of those typical "feelings is weakness unless it's anger and rage" kind of guys.
>>
>>2869797
>>2869845
Yeah the scissors are one of the nicest parts.
>>
>>2869760
Most of the things on these things is gimmicky bullshit you will absolutely never use
>>
>>2869845
I've used the saw on occasion, and the corkscrew I used for unintended purposes that it just seemed intuitive for until it broke (chinesium brittle steel)

>need
For the price of a Victorinox ("Swiss Army" kniife) 33 piece multi tool you can get....
>not even kidding
All this shit
Folders, skinners, tooth picks, a set of kitchen knives, some throwers (well shit, didnt "need" those but now I have 'em) God damn samurai swords and even a fucking Bowie thats bigger than a roman short sword.
>>
>>2869918
The huntsman costs 36 dollars.
>>
>>2869918
The 33 functions victorinox is like 100 dollars. You can get 2 relatively nice knives for that money, but if you want to have all this shit for 100 you are gonna the cheapest low quality garbage there is
>>
I have a climber that's in my pocket 99% of the time it's pretty cool. If you're only doing light trips a victorinox is fine
>>
>>2869959
For all those times you need an awl at the summit?
>>
>>2869960
>awl
I looked online and there seems to be nerds coming up with all sorts of shit to do with the hook and the reamer, but I don't use em. The rest of the stuff comes in useful pretty frequently.

No clue why they called it 'climber', should be called 'IT desk job' or 'amazon package opener'.

I'll stick with my compact. Until they put scisors and a pen on a ranger grip, the compact has the most versatile tool set imo.
>>
>>2869961
I'm not against victorinox. The small one is probably really great if you travel and want to cut your fingernails. But the point of was trying to make is you don't need two separate bottle opening solutions in the back woods when stabbing it with a knife works.
>>
>>2869960
You never know when you'll get attacked by a bear and have to make a hat.

The tweezers suck and the toothpick is gross. Take the alox pill.
>>
>>2870029
Why is the Alox so expensive compared to the Huntsman? It's the same size with less tools.
>>
>>2870031
thicker stock steel for outer-layer tools, and more expensive scale material
>>
>>2870029
the tweezers are a life saver when you the splinter that only appears after you trimmed your nails
i like the toothpick since i use it as a nail dirt remover too
>>
the philips head is nice. i wish mine had pliers.
>>
>>2870035
The tweezers are too flimsy to pull anything except dead-straight, micro slivers. I can't count how many times I have gotten a splinter and the Vic tweezers failed because the splinter was too 'grabby' in the skin. Thumbnail against the side of the knife blade works.
>>
>>2870029
Look over all my main point is, why do I need a belt knife? I've never felt the need to use one, I have one, it's nice, but I can never find a good reason to use it.
>>
>>2869760
It's true, you don't. I dual carry a Deluxe Tinker and a Camper for a balanced set of tools, plus 4 knives instead of 2 is nice. If I know ahead of time that I'm gonna be processing firewood, I'll bring a hatchet.
>>
>>2870268
What kind of hatchet? I cant process small pieces of firewood with a hatchet, but that might just be because I suck at sharpening hatchets.
>>
>>2870269
Fiskars X7. There's actually a pretty good review of it here that I mostly agree with:

https://forestry.com/reviews/hatchet-reviews/fiskars-x7-hatchet-review/
>>
>>2870271
Did you do anything to re-profile the edge? I suck at sharpening axes, so I have a crappy cheap axe and I've been practicing sharpening it before I buy a nice one.
>>
>>2869760
How are you going to defend yourself against a dogman or bear with that little shit?
>>
>>2870277
I probably should get a gun.
>>
>>2870269
This might be overkill but this is what I use: https://www.husqvarna.com/us/axes/swedish-style-hatchet/
>>
>>2870273
No, I'm pretty much using it stock, as is.

Fiskars sells the Xsharp sharpener tool here in Europe that is specifically designed for their own products. I use that to maintain the edge of the blade. But should it fail if the blade gets too worn out, I do have an aggressive bastard file, and access to my late grandpa's old grind stone.

For those interested, per Fiskars' own words, the X-range choppers have a 30 degree cutting bevel angle.
>>
>>2869963
The Compact is amazing. Very good selection of tools. It is only too expensive compared with the Huntsman.
>>
>>2869963
Yeah, those are actual useful tools. Everything else is just autism
>>
>>2870113
I phrased this like a retard, let me try again.

My main point is about carrying larger belt knives. What's the point of those? Anytime I need to cut something I reach for my SAK, not my belt knife. Do you guys carry belt knives? Why chose a larger fixed blade knife over smaller a folder?
>>
>>2870507
>Why chose a larger fixed blade knife over smaller a folder?
its something you don't mind being rough with & beating up
something like a swiss army knife is worsened as a whole if one thing gets fucked up, but all a larger fixed blade knife usually just needs a quick pass with a belt grinder to fix it
>>
>>2870508
1.Don't most people recommend taking care of your tools?
2.What are you doing that requires beating up a knife that can't be done better with an axe?
>>
>>2870512
if you actually do shit, you're gonna quickly find out that the people who won't shut up about "taking care of tools" don't actually use them, and are just worried about resale value
and sure, its great to make sure your tools don't rust or using them only on the correct application, but some tools are made to be abused, and a full tang hunting knife is one of them
theres plenty of stuff you can do with a knife that'll fuck it up too, batoning is a classic example of this
>>
>>2870512
>that can't be done better with an axe?
Are you going to hike with an axe?
Bringing some cast iron pans too?
>>
>>2870507
For regular hiking and eating prepackaged food from your gas stove you don’t need one, but you should have one anyway. If you’re hunting or fishing you don’t have junk getting inside a fixed blade like a folder. Carving by the fire is much better with a scandi or convex ground blade. Light bushcraft like pot holders, skewers, tent and tarp poles and pegs, trap sets is harder with a Swiss Army knife. When they get more important is if you have to do more involved woodworking like splitting wood for a wet weather fire or an improvised splint. Obviously modern fire starters negates this somewhat, as does not going into remote areas in saturating or below freezing conditions. However a $16 4oz Mora Companion might keep YouTubers from making videos about you being buttfucked to death by bigfoot in case you fuck up in bad weather.
>>
>>2870507
Bear attacks. The smallest knife I know of to kill a bear was a 3.75 inch locking Buck 110.
>>
>>2870512
>an axe
I guess if you bother to bring a fucking axe to a hiking trip, you dont need a sturdy knife too.
