I’ve played every game in the series and read all the original novels.
I love this series, and I love the author’s portrayal of the ugliness of human nature in these stories.
But the world-building in *2039* feels too contrived.
It basically implies that everyone is a Nazi, as if everyone is evil.
When you insist on labeling everyone as a villain, you’ve essentially given up on communication.
This is no different from the Japanese trope where a hero kills an evil villain.
Essentially, it’s just nonsense used to satirize the Russian government as Nazis.

The entire “everyone is a Nazi and part of irredeemably bad faction X” seems to be a way of getting around the fact that the games always reward you for taking a non-lethal approach. The first two are really atmospheric and have a lot of weird supernatural occurrences. Exodus sort of confirmed what the first 2 games just sort of play with that (most of it) was just radiation poisoning but there are definitely things unexplainable happening. I definitely wouldn't call the first 2 YA shit. They're very very dark and weird and horrifying. Everything sucks and everyone is miserable and it's awesome. In the novel’s ending, he comes to terms with himself. He realizes that he can survive without killing.
Making the Hunter the leader of a fascist state completely undermines the portrayal of him in the original novel.
