I was born in 84, been here since the 00s.
I've been to clubs, been to pubs, partied through the late 90s and 00s.
Alcohol opened up my ability to socialize in my late teens and early 20s, then it became a huge problem that I basically lost my entire 30s to.
Just switch to weed you say? I smoked weed the entire time too, it isn't a replacement, they do different things and combine nicely. I also took lots of other stuff occasionally or in context.
Anyone saying you can quit alcohol by switching to cannabis has a 50/50 chance of just ending up addicted to both.
That said, I committed to stop drinking 2 years ago, and gradually got my way out of it, but it was probably the hardest thing I ever did and it ruined my physique and almost killed me. It took me a year to start feeling healthy again, and another year to get something close to my old level of physicality back.

So as someone who has seen it from both sides?
It really would help zoomers break out of their collective shell, but it often helps so well that it turns into a problem that will eat decades of your life.

Advice to zoomers and gen alpha, take it or leave it:
Drink when you hang out with friends, but always less than you want. Its way worse being the sloppy drunk that the dude who holds back.
Never start drinking alone until you have a rich life that takes up most of your day, and then keep it to a glass of rye/whiskey/scotch at the end of the day. If you start drinking alone and you don't have anything to fill your days, you'll start filling it with drinking, then you're fucked.
Do cannabis with friends if it agrees with you, but it will fuck you up almost as bad as alcohol, and far more insidiously if you don't have anything to fill your days like above.
Do shrooms/acid a couple times a year, this is really fucking good for keeping your perspective from calcifying at some bullshit level that is keeping you down and unhappy. Don't take them more than once a month or they will fuck you up.

I'd watch my Dad drink a $20 bottle of Maker's Mark every night and smoke about $80 of weed per day (it was more expensive back then). He'd then say we were too poor to afford decent food for dinner. Not having a job and not making money aren’t the same thing. There are plenty of legitimate ways to earn outside traditional employment, arguably more now than ever. The issue isn’t a lack of opportunities, it’s a reluctance to pursue them.
