If you go to Alabama they totally have that. Bit hard to make out, but there are homes on the far side of this gorge. And there's also some smaller gorges in Al that are outright lined with homes.

I checked my legs 3 times and wore shorts - no ticks. And yes, the reviews for the hike did threaten ticks.
Also, you can just have chickens and they eat all the ticks if that is a problem.

I fucking loved Candyland as a kid. I had a VHS tape about it. That actually would be really cool as long as it was just in the woods and free and open 24/7.
>>533353392
I'd prefer you not.
>>533353519
Well, society is pretty fat. Kids are fat. Appalachian kids are fat. Maybe we should build castles in the woods to entice kids to play outside.

don't miss out on southern appalachia, its very american, they have deserts and desert canyons elsewhere, what appalachia has is fairly unique
>>533353822
funny you say that if you follow the national forest here oh gosh maybe 100 miles north (it runs longitudinally) you basically get that, its very geared towards climbers
this is more geared towards people with boats (houseboats apparently), and, especially, people with horses

i know appalachia from fallout 76
looked incredible but im a weak and fearful man
so my enjoyment will stem from observing true beauty from the comfort of my 4 walls
if you have a picture that encompasses such beauty, i will observe it too

They have plenty of state parks that have railings for all the scary bits and plenty of short/disabled vistas. PA in particular has a fuckton of roadside vistas (though many not especially sweeping).
I am an absolute pussy when it comes to heights and cliffs and I manage.
>>
>>
>>
>>533354481
most state parks close at night and many are outright gated after dark unless you are staying the night inside
they have places for normies like you, and they are called state parks
honestly, rockhouses/rockshelters are great places to camp if you can find one where that's allowed, don't even need a tent, just a sleeping bag and pad (where the cave doesn't go underground its just an overhang)

Best hikes in Serbia imo are Suva planina Trem mountaintop (1810 m), Stara planina (Balkan mountain, peak is around 2100 m), Kopaonik, Stolovi, Ovčar-Kablar gorge, Sićevo gorge, Tara mountain and its Banjska stena viewpoint, Mokra gora, also lots of not so tourist-friendly areas like Zlatar mountain, Rudnik, Grza, Jastrebac, Rtanj, Besna kobila, area around Bor and Priboj etc, area around Kruševac, Kraljevo, Novi Pazar and all those monasteries etc Some of the best forts are Golubac, Ram, pic related Maglič (it's a beautiful hikeuphill), monastery Manasija and its fort, basically lots of medieval monasteries wherever you go in secluded forested and mountainous areas. I haven't hiked around Bosnia, but it has some of the nicest mountains in the Balkans like Prenj and Zelengora.

Kek you'll only find docile rednecks and wild animals, although i wouldn't hike around Kosovo-Serbia line because there are drug roads for serbian and albanian smugglers
>>533356127
Serbia has a geography that's kinda similar to east coast America, maybe that's the similarity. Also i forgot to add Gradac river gorge (really beautiful, serene place), pic related Niševac gorge, and Sokobanja spa town with castle ruins and caves nearby.
>I have family from the broader area though
Where from exactly? You should definitely visit this part of Europe, really comfy aside from politics

sure as soon as they add 6 inches of legroom to economy seats, make the seats 4 inches wider, and allow you to bring water + cannabis through security and aboard the plane officially without hassle
as soon as those change, I will be there

serbia is not worth it, everything is covered with concrete shantytowns, there is trash everywhere, garish metal crosses litter some peaks, and literal narco investments turning national parks into resort / habitation zones
if you go by the river you will see indian ghat type shore horrors.
golubac fortress is probably the best thing you can see but i'd recommend just going to avala and seeing mestrovic's tomb of the unknown soldier which is a reinterpretation of kir's tomb and one of world's great works of sculpture

theres also coral castle, its not much to look at but some of the stones are 60,000 lbs, heavier than any individual stone in the pyramids of giza but the guy who built the place quarried and placed the stones by himself, he barely weighed over 100lbs
>>
>>533359285
american forts are so boring looking
they should build new ones in the woods just to explore
>>533359752
appalachia has plenty of shantytowns, I am quite used to it, don't mind, that's not the issue
>>533359756

it's not the shantytown concept, it's the aesthetic. serbian mentality is that of a squatter. every public space you see - crossroads, foot of a mountain, entrance to a national park - they build macaco tier concrete structures, which are basically - tire shop - car dump - cheap grill - and it's not like in american boonies, these people squat on public land pajeet / gypsy style. everywhere you go you will be forced to avoid their interference with normal life. because if they have a chance to sell you something, they will build a concrete barricade in the middle of the road to stop you.

the water isnt dyed? that fort, fort jefferson, is 100+ miles from mainland florida as a crow flies, 60-70 miles from the tip of key west, its out in the middle of the ocean, the lighter color water is just the shallows, you're looking at the sand through the water

my understanding is the gorgiest bit is somewhere in serbia called the iron gate or something

iron gate is towards romania where serbia and romania share a giant dam that tito and ceausescu built
mestrovic is in my opinion among the greatest sculptors that ever lived and seeing what he did on avala (where they actually detonated a medieval city called zrnov to build it) is well worth the trip; it's like early yugoslavian idea hewn into stone in a very imposing manner

This place is actually a huge disappointment it's 10 bucks to get in and you cant even go up to the ruins. If I didn't have an america the beautiful pass I would have felt ripped off. This place is also in eyesight of the saddest feather nigger casino in the west.
That being said there is some cool shit to visit in the Verde valley.
