That seems high until you consider that the 2-4% assumes a woman 16-24. A woman in her 40s has a 5-10+% chance of defects, with down syndrome especially jumping to a 1 in 30 shot from a 1 in 1250 if she's 16-24.

One of my wife's grandparents was a baby out of wedlock a long time ago. The baby was adopted by a relative and had a very good life. Not perfect but a better life than most people. If abortion had been common and easily obtained back then it would've caused so many knock on effects like It's a wonderful life.
