Why is it always "another man's son" and never a daughter? Is raising another man's daughter less shameful somehow?

Yes, it's less shameful, although only marginally so. If you're raising another man's daughter you can at least marry her off to someone else's son and get social credit in the community which may assist you in finding partners for your own sons, so another man's daughter can be an asset. The same is not true of raising another man's son, that is solely a burden and you don't benefit from it in any way.
