did you like carbonated water when you first tried it?
when i first tried carbonated water i was in elementary school, we were doing laps in gym class and this kid had a big ass jug of water with him so i asked him for a sip and he said it was carbonated and i didn't know what that meant so i said it was fine and then i took a swig and it tasted like vinegar, it was offensive to my tastes and i spit it out. from then on i hated carbonated water until one time as an adult i tried it again and liked it.

I didn't try carbonated water until I was an adult, so I enjoyed my first experience and prefer it to soda. Though I did try tonic water as a kid and hated it. I've tried it as an adult and still don't like it, but don't hate it nearly as much as I did when I was young.

Maybe your friend had tonic water and simply referred to it as carbonated water. I don't see how it would have tasted like vinegar just from carbonation.
