WASH YOUR HANDS IMMEDIATELY UNDER COOL, RUNNING WATER.
Hold your fingers under the tap for at least 5 to 10 minutes to flush whatever is on your skin away. Do not scrub harshly, just let the water run over your fingers.
Once you are running your hands under the water, read the rest of this:
Regular table salt (sodium chloride) does not burn intact skin. If your fingers are burning, one of two things is happening:
1. You have broken skin on your fingers.
Do you have a paper cut, torn cuticles, hangnails, cracked skin from dryness, or eczema? If regular table salt gets into even a microscopic cut, it will sting terribly.
What to do: Once you wash it out, the pain should stop within a few minutes. It hurts, but it is harmless.
2. It is not regular table salt.
What exactly did you pour? Was it:
Ice Melt / Driveway Salt? Many ice melts contain Calcium Chloride. When Calcium Chloride touches moisture (like the natural moisture on your fingers), it creates an exothermic reaction—meaning it literally creates heat and can cause a chemical burn.
Pool chemicals or dishwasher salt? These can be highly alkaline or acidic and can burn the skin.
What to do: If it was a household chemical or ice melt, keep your hands under the running water for 15 to 20 minutes. Use a mild soap to make sure all residue is gone.
When to get help:
If you have washed your hands thoroughly for 15 minutes and the burning has not stopped, or if your skin is blistering, peeling, or turning bright red, you may have a chemical burn.
In the US, you can call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for free, immediate advice.
Seek urgent medical care if the pain is severe or the skin looks damaged.
Please reply with what kind of salt it was if you are still concerned!
