What is the evolutionary purpose of being obsessed about superheroes, comics and Pokémon at an adult age? Is it arrested development?

Superhero movies actually have some interesting deeper topics in them. Otherwise I think a lot of the interest in games, anime and what you listed is arrested development.

Cope for feeling powerless in the real world.

Like what? All I see is just capeshit and nonsense.

Culture is evolutionary beneficial, all intelligent animals have culture that's used to separate in groups from asocial outgroups that then allows the ingroup to succeed.

The movies make you happy because the good guy defeats the bad guy. The movies are also easy to consume. You wish to chase this high even more, so you start to consume all capeshit. The pleasure of an easy story where the good guy wins turns into the pleasure of having encyclopedic knowledge of a franchise.
For pokemon, it's about an alternate world where you're a kid going on grand adventures and all your challenges are fun and mystical compared to real life where you have school/work/taxes/politics/health problems.

depends how you define "obsessed", but we are social creatures so the embodiment of ideals that we attach meaning to being told in a narrative can have a large effect on us. There's a transcendent quality to it that functions in a similar way to religion. Superheroes are basically a more entertaining version of the characters you read in religious texts

So I guess there isn't an evolutionary purpose. Not everything needs on. Manchildren are subjected to media from an early stage in life, to them it's just normal. Media and entertainment are too recent in human history to be embedded into our genes.

There is no evolutionary purpose behind mass marketed consumer products. There is a cultural purpose which is to make as much money as possible and gain a devoted fanbase.

Certain videogames can have a lot more insightful content while capeshit, comics and Pokémon are hollow and useless entertainment.

It's an atavistic throwback to the kinds of government propaganda employed to mass control humans. Jesus is just the first mega-successful comic book movie franchise.

The message? No matter what you do or how justified, even if God is on your side, the government will nail you to a cross and spit on you and you'll thank us.

Same neural pathways used by ancient people to memorize their pantheons and mythology. It's a beneficial social adaptation because it gives the individual an knowledge of archetypes and parables to reinforce their position in the social order and provides an example of how to conduct themselves in different situations.

No the other anon is right. Most games are dumb as fuck and this is coming from someone who loves vidya. A lot of superhero comics at least try to have a point and don't trip over their intended message like a lot of games do.

Dumb is ok. Gay is not

it is not a new phenomenon
hero worship has existed since the dawn of civilization, see the epic of gilgamesh

A good game provides you problem solving, active visual reflexes, a story and artistic direction. Capeshit only provides you passive entertainment and escapism.

Finding enjoyment in media that society labels childish does not actually significantly impair development.

The Witness is an outlier in this regard because it actually tries to a thing with its narrative, unlike most games which at most have a story in of itself and that's it.
