I have both Keeneland and Tampa Bay open in the background and I keep wondering if the stream stopped because there's huge periods where they don't say anything and there's no background sounds or anything. I'm too used to the NY Races where they are constantly yapping.

Most track feeds are bare bones track feeds designed to be watched at the track bar/simulcast facility/OTB parlor.
They typically have silence except for when the race is running and usually a short pre-race commentary section from the paddock reporter usually about 15 mins before the race. Some will have commentary over the post parade. Also at the beginning of the day they will have the track's talking heads give a rundown of the days races and their picks for the upcoming races, as well as the days scratches and updates.
Usually because these are being watched at places that have dozens of tvs all tuned to different racetracks.
The NYRA stream is designed as a TV show for the FS1/FS2 channels, which is why it has so much more commentary and much less dead air.

I'm going to shill this Japanese horse drama because it's a really good show if you love the bloodline aspect of the sport. It's also good, if dramatized, look into every aspect of a horse's career from the breeding, the training, the jockeys, the stable staff, the races, to the drama between the owners.

I think it's Passing the Reins on netflix.

A lot of times when there's a bunch of scratches in the high teens digits those are "also eligibles" - horses that will only enter the race if other horses scratch. Most american races aren't run with more than 12 horses, the kentucky derby being a notable exception with its 20 horse field.

I've never seen Drive to Survive, but the character drama is heavily dramatized. The horse racing aspect is generally accurate though, which is to be expected since it's sponsored by the JRA themselves.

You can get most stuff except for detailed past performances (pic related) for free. You usually either have to pay directly or indirectly (by betting) for the past performance info.

for races that have certain trainers in them or progeny of certain sires you can also get free pps, but they aren't organized in a way that its easy to find the race you want.
there used to be a site called whobet that compiled all that stuff but all the providers started blocking links from his site.

Has anyone here watched harness racing? It's the only type of racing at the track closest to where I live. Even if I admittedly don't think it's exciting as flat racing, it's fine in its own way.

Arguably the most prestigious turf race in the world (Or at least one of top turf races, though due to the overall decline of European racing its status has been declining somewhat), Japanese horses have attempted the race dozens of times (first time by Speed Symboli in 1969) but are yet to win the race (there is a joke that the French use their druids to summon rain and turn the turf into a swamp and that's why JP horses can't win)
Here is a video of The Japanese Triple Crown winner Orfevre racing in L'Arc in 2012

It's decent but there is less horses involved in the races and it's weird watching horses going at a weird gait compared to how they usually run. It's more fun to do than watch.

Imo the Japanese and JRA are too obsessed with l'Arc. Good example is Just a Way being made to run in l'Arc in 2014. Just a Way was a miler, he had just won the Dubai Duty Free 1800 meter along with the Yasuda Kinen earlier in the year, he should have run in the Prix de la Foret, which happens on the same weekend as l'Arc at Longchamp, and is a prestigious mile race. Instead they forced him, a horse who hadn't run a race above 2000 meters in 2 and a half years, to run a 2400 meter race for no reason other than "it's l'Arc!"

>tfw no American horse has ever won l'Arc
>>
>>154317389
American bred horses have won l'Arc before like Allez France, Alleged and Suave Dancer. An American trained horse has never won l'Arc but a big part of that is because the US has a heavier focus on dirt racing than turf racing like Europe and Japan.

Because flat horse racing exists here, we even have rodeos with bull riding, barrell racing and horse shows. Pretty sure if dogs didn't exist horses would be the most common animal I see where I live, and I don't live in a village, by simply just walking around since they are so common. My family still owns a race horses though she is currently working her second life as a broodmare.
My country has the Detroit problem, most of the country is fine, i.e you can live here without being shot or robbed for just existing (you can even take walks at night in most places and early in the morning without anything happening to you), however the south side of Belize city, where virtually all the crime happens, shoots up our crime rate by an astronomical amount since the people who live there are chimps.

Nah, it's just training the 5 core stats and buying skills that relate to the performance the irl horse showed. For example Gold Ships special basically makes her start accelerating from the midway point of the race and irl Gold Ship also did this since he was an End and inherited McQueens massive stamina reserves making it so he could accelerate for over 1000 meters up hill in a 3200 meter race and still have gas in the tank for the final spurt.
Good horse games I'd recommend would be Winning Post 10 where you take the role of a horse owner and breeder with your own farm and choose one of the multiple different eras of Japanese horse racing history to start in. It goes really in depth, for a game, with strategy and breeding as well as arranging a race schedule however you only watch the races and don't actually jockey the horse but you do choose the main jockeys of your horses. WP10 2026 just recently came out however it do require you either knowing Japanese or using a screen translator to play (Hopefully since Uma got popular they'll release an English version of the game soon).
Another one is G1 Jockey, where you do in fact become a jockey and take the reins of the horse yourself.

Part of the reason Colic is so deadly to horses, since they can't throw up they usually just rupture their stomach and internal organs. If a horse ever looks like it's trying to throw up then it's suffering from a distended stomach and that is life threatening.

The Japanese horse racing industry will definitely turn into the Hapsburgs if they don't stop being retarded. The mythicization of Sunday Silence blood truly has fucked over the JPs, 70% of the thoroughbred population with SundayMan 3 or 4 back. Then people wonder why in the modern day at this point virtually 80% of all Sundally Silence lines that did exist now no longer exist and of the remaining 20% the only one that will survive the coming 3rd extinction of Japanese lines will be the Sunday Silence x Wind in her Hair lines like Deep Impacts line or with Kitasan Black and Equinox. I blame Japanese breeding methods since those have been behind everyone else by about 30 years until relatively recently.
>>
>>154350102
Just use a Screen Translator anon, one like MeoW OCR that just translates the screen for you, that's the one I use at least. It was originally for VNs however WP isn't that complicated of a game in terms of dialogue or terms so the translator has no problems translating the entire screen as opposed to just a text bubble.

Equinox was recent, potentially the best middle distance horse in Japanese history and one of the, if not THE, best at least in 2000 meters since he set a new world distance record time for 2000 meters at the Tenno Sho Autumn however he retired early and iirc the only international win he had was the Dubai Sheema the only int race, asiw from the Japan Cup, he participated in. Before that you had Loves Only You, who won the Breeders Cup Mare, and March Lorraine who won the Breeders Cup Distaff I believe in 2021. This is assuming we're talking about Jap horses going international of course.

>How much of a problem is this?
Considering that there are dozens of outcross broodmares (often high-quality ones) imported to Japan every year, I would say not that big of a problem, and as Sunday Silence is pushed further back in the pedigrees with time, it will only get smaller
>Is there anywhere you can look up the coefficient of inbreeding for racehorses without having to pay?
Just calculate it yourself or ask an AI to do it for you. I usually just give the AI an image of the pedigree and most of the time it calculates COI accurately
>>
>>154354516
https://labgenvet.ca/en/inbreeding-calculator/
If 2 horses share the same calculator then the I breeding coefficient is about 12.5%, if they share the same great grandfather it's about 3.25%. 3.25% is fine, the problem is they don't just share SundayMan in their pedigrees 99% of the time, especially since the Deep Impact took over for his father so a lot of horses share both Sunday Silence and Wind in her Hair in their pedigrees and virtually every horse has Northern Taste in their pedigrees as well in Japan.
>>
>>
>>154354634
>dozens
Doesn't mean much when Kitasan Black alone covers 191 mares every year, and Kitasan isn't even the most successful Deep Impact x Wind in her Hair stallion in Japan. The Japs have introduced new stallions though, like American Pharaoh (at least for this season of breeding), Adayar a Derby winning Frankel colt, Sottsass a l'Arc winner Siyouni colt and Hukum a Sea the Stars colt among other imported stallions.
